Unbeaten Tyron Woodley Hopes To Keeps Win Streak Alive When He Faces Veteran Zach ‘The Lisbon Outlaw’ Light At STRIKEFORCE Challengers in Tulsa, OK On Friday, Sept. 25

Source - Strikeforce:

NEW YORK (August 31, 2009) – Budding superstar and two-time All-American wrestler at the University of Missouri, Tyron “T-Wood’’ Woodley (5-0) of St. Louis, will face his sternest test to date when he meets former Tito Ortiz protégé, Zach “The Lisbon Outlaw’’ Light (4-8) of Huntington Beach, Calif., in a welterweight (170 pounds) fight at the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Friday, Sept. 25.

The three-round, 5-minute mixed martial arts (MMA) encounter at SpiritBank Event Center will be one of the five fights televised live on SHOWTIME.

It will be the second STRIKEFORCE start for Woodley, the 11th of 13 children raised mostly by a single mother. In an impressive debut, he registered a first round (4:20) submission (Brabo choke) over Sal Woods during the non-televised portion of the “Lawler vs. Shields’’ event at Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri on June 6, 2009.

A popular up-and-comer, the 5-foot-9, 27-year-old Woodley has been victorious by submission in all of his outings since turning pro on Feb. 27, 2009. His initial two starts lasted a combined 1:57 and he has yet to hear the bell for the second round.

“I’m really excited to be fighting in the Challengers series on SHOWTIME,’’ he said. “Any time a major organization like STRIKEFORCE calls, you’ve got to seize the opportunity. I’m trying to break down doors.’’

Before turning to MMA, the talented Woodley was Missouri’s first conference wrestling champion. He went 48-0 and won a state championship during his senior year at McCluer High in St. Louis.

So, this is a young man accustomed to winning. But he had to overcome a lot, and his teenage years were definitely a struggle after his father left the family behind when “T-Wood’’ was 10.

“My mom deserves credit,’’ said Woodley, who not only persevered but also reconciled with his Dad. “I learned a lot. Having that many people in the house with limited resources made me a better person.’’

While still relatively unknown outside St. Louis, the highly regarded newcomer remains one to watch. “I continue to work hard on whatever it takes that I can incorporate into my wrestling style that will make me better,’’ said Woodley, who credits the birth of his son, Tyron Jr., as a turning point in his life. “I just want to improve. My goal is to look completely different every fight.

“I’m an experienced wrestler, but a baby in MMA. The most important thing is to be able to go out and compete without hesitation. If I do that, I’ll win. In MMA, I get into that zone. I’m able to block things out. Hopefully, that will become routine for me. There’s a lot more at stake every fight.

“But sometimes it doesn’t matter who’s the best; it’s who wants it the most. Good people lose all the time. To go out there and take by force what’s yours is not something you get to do in every sport.’’

Light was born and raised in Lisbon, Iowa. On the comeback trail, the 5-foot-8, 35-year-old also possesses a strong wrestling pedigree and has trained with one of the biggest names in the sport.

“I moved to California with nothing but a duffle bag and ended up meeting Tito,’’ said Light, who hopes to shine brightly in his first appearance before a paying audience since Nov. 11, 2008. “After getting to know me, he offered me a spot on Team Punishment.”

Tickets for the STRIKEFORCE: Challengers event, priced from $25, are on sale at SpiritBank Event Center box office, all Ticketmaster locations (800-745-3000), Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com), and STRIKEFORCE’s official website (www.strikeforce.com).

In the main event on Sept. 25, American military hero Tim Kennedy (10-2) of Fayetteville, N.C., will face unbeaten Zak Cummings (10-0) of Springfield, Missouri in a middleweight (185 pounds) scrap.

In a second SHOWTIME fight, K-1 legend and six-time world kickboxing champion, Ray “Sugarfoot” Sefo (1-0) of Las Vegas takes on Alabama-born Kevin “The Shaman” Jordan (11-7) in a heavyweight match.

SpiritBank Event Center doors will open at 7:15 p.m. CT for the STRIKEFORCE Challengers event and the first preliminary bout will begin at 8 p.m.

Amongst the Oklahomans scheduled to appear on the card are Tulsa rivals Travis “The Dark Knight” Calanoc (4-0) and Thomas Longacre (4-0), who will put their unbeaten records on the line against each.

The live SHOWTIME telecast will begin at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the west coast).

World championship MMA promotion STRIKEFORCE will produce the event at SpiritBank Event Center along with eXtreme Fighting promoter and five-time world kickboxing champion Dale “Apollo” Cook.

STRIKEFORCE Challengers is a proving ground for up-and-coming MMA fighters. The series is designed to provide today’s top prospects with the opportunity to step-up their level of competition and demonstrate their ability in a nationally televised event.

"KING MO" LAWAL'S DESTRUCTION OF MARK KERR CAPS OFF THRILLING NIGHT OF FIGHTS AT "HDNET FIGHTS PRESENTS M-1 BREAKTHROUGH"

Source - M-1 Global:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -

Kansas City, Kansas -- Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal showed stateside fans exactly what all of the hype surrounding him was all about as he made surprisingly short work of UFC veteran Mark Kerr in the main attraction of "HDNET FIGHTS PRESENTS M-1 BREAKTHROUGH," which aired live on in the United States on HDNet and around the world via Internet PPV on www.M-1Global.com.

While many in attendance were aware of the fact that Kerr was coming into the fight as a heavy underdog, having taken the fight on just two weeks notice, few expected for the contest to end as suddenly, and as violently as it did. Just seconds into the bout the former Division I All-American wrestler caught a leg kick from Kerr, scooped the massive 260-plus pound brawler high into the air and slammed him to the canvas. Once on the mat Lawal punished the side of Kerr's head with a series of punches, before a few well placed blows underneath the armpit and to the chin of the fallen legend sent his mouthpiece rocketing into the expensive seats, and forced the referee to call a halt to the contest in the process.

Lawal's trademark flamboyant ring entrance lasted nearly four times the duration of the bout. A spectacular performance from a rising star touted as one of the most promising up and comers in the sport.

In what ended up being an exhibition match to not soon be forgotten, M-1 Global heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko faced off with fellow M-1 Global fighter and newly-crowned Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi in a topsy turvy bout that saw both men being flung to the canvas on the receiving ends of powerful Sambo throws. After escaping a Mousasi armbar earlier in the contest, Emelianenko later returned the favor, only this time forcing the submission on his younger comrade.

Both Fedor and Mousasi seemed to thoroughly enjoying themselves during the exhibition, and the crowd in tune had fun along with them. Although far from a real fight, Emelianenko showed glimmers of why he is widely considered to be the best fighter on the planet earth, while Mousasi laid credibility to the common belief that, at just twenty four years of age, he could one day fill the enormous gap that would be left should Fedor someday choose to leave the sport.

Known for his pre-fight intimidation tactics, Karl Amoussou picked up right where he left off during Friday evening's weigh-ins when himself and late replacement John Doyle had to be separated, getting right in the face of Doyle before being sternly warned by the referee to step back. Once the action got underway it seemed hopeful for the man known as "The Iron Bull" as Doyle countered a vicious Amoussou leg kick by dragging the feared French Striker to the ground and working a little good old fashioned ground and pound. Doyle's time spent in charge of the action in the early moments of the first was short lived as Amoussou executed a beautiful sweep from the bottom where he wound up in full mount. From there "The Psycho" rained down punches until Doyle was force to give his back where Amoussou quickly sunk in his hooks for the rear-naked choke submission.

A man that many pundits tout as the most talented pound for pound fighter currently fighting out of "M-1 Challenge," the Brazilian born "Godfather of Jiu-Jitsu in Finland," Lucio Linhares, added validity to those experts' claims by winning in as impressive a fashion as could possibly be expected over a man that bested him on the scorecards just a little more than a year ago. Linhares rocked the Red Devil trained Mikhail Zayats with a flurry of hard punches on the feet before following his fallen foe to the canvas where he pounced on the Russian, sinking in his hooks and forcing the quick rear-naked choke redemption victory.

Heavyweights Rob Broughton and Jessie Gibbs showed that they are two big men to keep an eye on in the future as they tried to mug one another for three hard fought rounds to the delight of the many in attendance. While not the most tactical display of action during the night, neither man gave an inch in a bout that failed to disappoint. In the end Gibbs was awarded with the unanimous decision victory, although it was the type of contest that could have easily swung in either fighter's direction.

A full list of the results from "M-1 Global: Breakthrough" are listed below:

DVD Review: The Rise & Fall Of WCW

Source - Main Event Radio's Steven Wilson:

When the Rise And Fall of WCW DVD was announced it quickly became the most anticipated wrestling DVD release of the year for a multitude of reasons. Many hoped it would be as high in quality as the rise and fall of ECW while others looked forward to it to see how WWE would rewrite and criticize WCW’s history. With the final product now available I can say that neither hope or expectation came true, instead we’ve got another fluffed up DVD production that at best glosses over the history of World Championship Wrestling.

As has become the norm with major WWE DVD releases nowadays, this is a 3 Disc set featuring a documentary portion on Disc One, with the 2 other discs packed full of matches.

The documentary runs just over an hour and forty five minutes, with the first half hour looking at the early days of WCW, more specifically how WCW came to be. From Jim Crockett promotions to Georgia Championship Wrestling to Mid Atlantic Wrestling and finally WCW under the guise of Ted Turner, each era is covered with a decent degree of detail. Some historical accuracies are evident in chapters covering topics such as Black Saturday where Vince McMahon made a deal to get WWF programming on TBS while at the same time getting the crockett’s kicked off.

It’s from there on in that the DVD goes into gloss over mode. The biggest problem this DVD faced was the fact that numerous DVD’s had been released in the past that touched on the rise and fall of WCW, most notably the Monday Night Wars DVD. Although that DVD shared the spotlight with the WWF’s actions at the time it still provided for a decent picture of the situation and war between the two companies which in many ways is the meat of WCW’s life story. The WWE can consider itself lucky that they produced that DVD, because had they not, many of the interview footage for this DVD would not of been available. Eric Bischoff, Hulk Hogan, Ted Turner and others sided against participating in this DVD and thus a wide array of canned footage is used.

Unfortunately for the viewers of this DVD, its possibly because of the fact that the prior DVD’s had been released that the final two thirds of this DVD does nothing more than touch on major subjects with little to no details. From the revoving door of WCW presidents to the hiring of Eric Bischoff and the signing of Hulk Hogan to the creation of the N.W.O, to its rise in popularity, goes by in minutes. You get no feel for just how big it got, how much of a problem it became, the major feuds they entered into, or even mention the fact that it eventually split into two groups.

The same thing can be said about other stars mentioned in this DVD, even including Goldberg, who does get a major spotlight put on him but little to no explanation of major milestones his character reached, the feuds he entered in or the impact it had on the company.

Moving onto the “Fall of WCW” chapters you are met with what is probably the biggest letdown. If you wanted to know what caused the downfall of WCW and details of how bad the backstage was at the time your more likely to find the information on a series of shoot interviews and independent documentaries, but the WWE can boast that they have the footage. Showing scenes such as Nash ending Goldberg’s streak just to lay down to Hogan soon after, as well as Vince Russo’s shoot on Hulk Hogan at the Bash at the Beach 2000 PPV and David Arquette winning the WCW championship you get to see some of the examples of the downfall of WCW but with little to no explanation.

Participants in the DVD include Jim Ross, Kevin Sullivan (who never acknowledges he was a booker or talks about his opinions of the fall) Chris Jericho, The Big Show and Goldberg. The Crockett / NWA era is covered by the likes of Jim Croclett JR, Dusty Rhodes, Ric Flair and Mike Graham. Sprinkled throughout the DVD is Vince McMahon, who is never negative or critical of WCW, but keeps his thoughts extremely short acknowledging they were competition but almost sounding sarcastic when he does admit it.

This documentary had the potential of being a smash hit, However due to the lack of willing participants, the lack of intensive detail, and the lack of some historical accuracies it does not live up to what it could have been. The DVD is far from unwatchable. Much like the greatest stars of the 90’s DVD, you can sit down and reminisce a bit but your unlikely to learn anything new. In otherwords it is not the definitive word on the rise and fall of WCW despite the fact that it carries the title.

If something makes this DVD worth the money it’s the multitude of matches from the WCW video library. There is 20 matches in all, and while some are more worthy than others, they don’t repeat certain big matches such as Goldberg vs Hogan which were released on previous DVD releases.

The Rise & Fall of WCW is now available on DVD from World Wrestling Entertainment. You can pick it up wherever WWE DVD’s are sold or via any major internet retailer. For more information check out www.wwe.com and to read my previous DVD reviews check out www.wrestlingdvdreview.com

INTENSE AMOUSSOU/DOYLE STAREDOWN HIGHLIGHTS "HDNET FIGHTS PRESENTS M-1 BREAKTHROUGH" WEIGH-INS

Source - M-1 Global:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -

Kansas City, Missouri - Considered by many pundits to be nothing more than an opponent for Karl "Psycho" Amoussou, John "The Iron Bull" Doyle sent a message Thursday afternoon during weigh-ins for "HDNET FIGHTS PRESENTS M-1 BREAKTHROUGH" that he did not venture to Kansas City to lose.

Amoussou vs. Doyle will be just one of seven total bouts to be featured during Friday's HDNet telecast (10 p.m. ET) that will emanate from the historic Memorial Hall in Kansas City (tickets still available at Ticketmaster.com).

After weighing in, both Doyle and Amoussou were asked to partake in a pre-fight stare down intended as nothing more than a photo opportunity. However, what ensued was nearly a premature start to "Breakthrough," with Amoussou and Doyle looking eager to lock horns a day early.

Amoussou, voted Sherdog.com's number one European MMA prospect, tried to psyche out Doyle much in the way that his idol, former PRIDE middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva, used to try to intimidate his opposition. However, when Amoussou pushed his forehead into Doyle's, the resurgent "Iron Bull" informed Amoussou that he didn't want to be touched.

A second attempt was made to take a face off photo but Amoussou once again tried to get into Doyle's head. With Amoussou not heeding his call, Doyle jammed his forehead into Amoussou before M-1 Global officials ended the photo opportunity early.

Amoussou is a French phenom who serves as an undercover police officer in his native France. With many International viewers not having access to HDNet, www.M-1Global.com is offering a special Internet pay-per-view stream (to order, simply visit M-1Global.com).

With the exception of three fighters, all of the combatants scheduled to compete on Friday successfully made weight. Spanish fighter Rogent Lloret, who will headline "Breakthrough's" undercard during a free Sherdog.com stream (8:15 p.m. ET), was granted permission to weigh-in on Friday after visa problems delayed his arrival to the U.S.

Additionally, former Tunisian Olympian Ferrid "The Hurricane" Kheder weighed in at 159 lbs, four pounds over the contracted lightweight limit for his bout against DREAM veteran Daisuke Nakamura. Despite Kheder's inability to make weight after having his flight from Los Angeles canceled Wednesday night, Nakamura did not let those expecting Nakamura vs. Kheder to steal tomorrow's show down, as he accepted the fight. For his troubles, Nakamura will receive 10% of Kheder's purse.

All remaining fighters made weight, including the headliners for "HDNET FIGHTS PRESENTS M-1 BREAKTHROUGH," "King" Mo Lawal and Mark "The Smashing Machine" Kerr. Rey Mysterio Given Thirty-Day Suspension

WWE has publicly announced its latest wellness-policy suspension (although specifics weren't given), in Rey Mysterio.

Mysterio's latest match has already been taped (without giving away anything, he wrestles on Friday), and the suspension won't begin until Wednesday, September 3, since, on Tuesday, he'll presumably have to wrestle and lose the Intercontinental title.

Sadly, this most likely open the door for a Dolph Ziggler title reign, which, at the very least, had previously been strongly considered (making me wonder if some in WWE's front office aren't chronic violators of the wellness policy).

“THE SOLIE CHRONICLES” SENDS READERS ON WILD RIDE THROUGH WORLD OF PRO WRESTLING

Source - Eclectic Media Productions:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August 25, 2009

Contact: Bob Allyn
(770) 634-1528
gsolie1@gmail.com

-- Book is “life and times” of legendary wrestling broadcaster Gordon Solie

(Tampa, FL) – Since the late 1800s, professional wrestling has turned out many high-profile stars. But one of the most well-known personalities wasn’t even a wrestler.

He was a commentator and announcer named Gordon Solie.

Now author Bob Allyn, with help from co-authors Pamela S. Allyn (Gordon Solie's Daughter) and Scott Teal, aims to enrich wrestling fans with the life and times of this legendary broadcaster, who died in 2000 at the age of 71.

Published by Crowbar Press, The Solie Chronicles takes fans on a wild ride behind-the-scenes in the world of professional wrestling.

All sorts of personalities make their way into Allyn’s book about Solie—everyone from wrestlers like Ric Flair and Dusty Rhodes and Hulk Hogan to “The Voice of Florida wrestling,” Shannon Rose.

Famous dead-pan style interviews and colorful play-by-play broadcasts of wrestling led to Solie’s induction into the WCW Hall of Fame (Class of 1995), the NWA Hall of Fame (Class of 2006), and the WWE Hall of Fame (Class of 2008).

It’s been said of Solie’s influence and stature, “Gordon calling a world championship match was like Al Michaels or Bob Costas calling a Super Bowl or World Series ... just a perfect fit!”

Author Allyn says, “The background material for this biography was found in Gordon’s personal files and taken from interviews with the people who knew him the best. It’s written as a testament to a man who made his mark in many endeavors,” Allyn says.

The bulk of the book’s content is drawn from interviews with 65 people from all walks of life who knew Gordon best: family and friends; stock car drivers; professional wrestlers; referees and promoters; journalists; commentators, broadcasters, and photographers.

Born Jonard Frank Labiak on January 26, 1929, Gordon began working as a page and errand boy for a Louisiana radio station while he was in the U.S. Air Force. Known to his fellow servicemen as “Gordy,” he would later legally change his name to Gordon Solie, a name chosen to honor his family history.

In 1950, he took a job as an announcer for WEBK radio in Ybor City, Florida. By starting his own radio sports interview program, Gordon made key contacts in professional wrestling and stock car racing.

Subsequently, Solie set a course and made a major impact on the development of professional wrestling, along with being closely associated with national auto thrill show tours, stock car racing on Florida’s Suncoast, and ultimately, becoming the host for the highest-rated show on the largest cable network in America.

Gordon left WCW with a record of good performance, but he did leave an off-the-job situation hanging over his head. While still with WCW, the company changed Gordon’s flights from Delta to Kiwi. He wasn’t happy about the change. Not only did he and Smoky take vacation trips on Gordon’s Delta frequent flyer miles, but a lot of the attendants knew him. He was a regular and they treated him like one. They would make allowances if he occasionally drank too much, and perhaps even chastise him for lighting a cigarette on a plane.

"Gordon used to sneak a wet towel into the bathrooms on the airplanes," said Harley Race. "He used to put the damp towel over the smoke detector and sit in the airplane restroom and smoke cigarettes. Gordon was the reason that the airlines added signs about not tampering with their smoke detectors."

When Gordon learned that some WCW staff members were still flying Delta, he was doubly ticked off. Chip on his shoulder and all, Gordon got on a Kiwi flight and began belting down some drinks, and then fired up a cigarette. When a flight attendant began to reprimand him, she got a strong dose of verbal abuse from him. When airline personnel complained to WCW about Gordon’s behavior, someone at WCW filed that away in their memory for use at a future date.

UFC® IS GOING BACK TO CALI FOR UFC 104

For Immediate Release:
August 24, 2009

TWO OF BRAZIL’S TOP EXPORTS BATTLE IT OUT FOR THE BELT

LYOTO MACHIDA vs. MAURICIO ‘SHOGUN’ RUA

CAIN VELASQUEZ vs. BEN ROTHWELL

LIVE FROM STAPLES CENTER – SATURDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2009

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – It’s been more than two years, but the Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) is finally bringing world-class mixed martial arts back to California, and when the lights go down for the main event of UFC 104 on Saturday, October 24th, fans will witness a battle between two of the most dynamic fighters ever to set foot in the world-famous Octagon™, as Brazil’s Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida defends his UFC light heavyweight title for the first time against his countryman and fellow superstar Mauricio “Shogun” Rua. Also waging war at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles on the UFC 104: Machida vs Shogun card, which is presented by TapouT, will be a clash between two of the heavyweight division’s top rising stars, unbeaten Cain Velasquez and UFC newcomer “Big” Ben Rothwell.

“It’s been two years since the UFC was in Southern California and we knew we had to bring something special for our return to the capital of mixed martial arts,” said UFC President Dana White. “Lyoto Machida captured the imagination of fight fans with his knockout of Rashad Evans, and while he seems unbeatable right now, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua not only has the tools to beat any 205-pounder in the world, but he’s coming off a knockout of Chuck Liddell in his last fight, so his confidence is sky-high. This has the potential to be one of the greatest light heavyweight title fights ever.”

Tickets for UFC 104 will go on sale Saturday, August 29 at 10 a.m. PT and will be priced at $600, $400, $300, $200, $100, $75 and $50. Tickets are available online at ticketmaster.com, via Ticketmaster charge-by-phone lines at (800) 745-3000 and are also available at the STAPLES Center box office. Prices do not include service charges.

UFC® Fight Club™ members will have the opportunity to purchase tickets to this event Thursday, August 27 starting at 10 a.m. PT via UFC.com. A special Internet ticket pre-sale will be available to UFC newsletter subscribers on Friday, August 28 starting at 10 a.m. PT. To access this presale, users must register for the UFC newsletter through UFC.com.

A man that remains a mystery to every opponent he’s faced in his mixed martial arts career is Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida (fighting out of Belem, Brazil). With a perfect 15-0 record and three finishes in his last three fights, the 31-year-old Brazilian has dominated the UFC light heavyweight division. His highlight-reel second-round knockout of undefeated Rashad Evans not only captured the UFC light heavyweight belt, but established Machida as an international superstar. With an unorthodox style and a Machida Karate black belt, Machida remains one of the hardest targets to hit in the Octagon™. The lifelong martial artist also holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and is dangerous anywhere the fight goes.

“I’m honored to be making my first title defense in Los Angeles,” Machida said. “The fact that I get to fight someone as respected as Shogun is an honor as well. My last fight before I won the title was against Thiago Silva, so I know how tough my fellow Brazilians are. I’m training extremely hard for this matchup and I’m looking forward to a great fight.”

A fighter that has faced the best in the world throughout his career, Mauricio “Shogun” Rua (fighting out of Curitiba, Brazil) has now made a name for himself in the UFC. With a “Fight of the Night” TKO victory over UFC Hall of Famer Mark Coleman at UFC 93 and a devastating first-round TKO over another Hall of Famer, Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell, Rua has positioned himself as the No. 1 contender for the UFC light heavyweight title. At only 27 years old, “Shogun” has already compiled an 18-3 professional record, including wins over former UFC light heavyweight champion Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Kevin Randleman and Ricardo Arona.

“I feel very happy about fighting for the UFC belt,” Rua said. “It’s a huge opportunity in my career and in my life, and having this chance gets me closer to reaching my career’s ultimate goal and my life’s biggest dream. I think fighting Lyoto is a great thing because he is the man to beat right now. He’s wearing the belt and he has a very well-rounded game.”

A former two-time NCAA Division I All-American wrestler at Arizona State, Cain Velasquez (fighting out of San Jose, California) has parlayed his successful wrestling career into a stellar mixed martial arts campaign. The 27-year-old heavyweight contender is a perfect 6-0 with four UFC wins, three coming via TKO. At UFC 99, Velasquez faced his toughest test yet in proven striker Cheick Kongo and earned a hard-fought unanimous decision victory. Now the Salinas, California native faces his most experienced opponent yet in Ben Rothwell.

“Ben is a great opponent with heavy hands,” Velasquez said. “He is an all-around big fighter that comes out of a great camp. I look forward to putting on an exciting fight for the fans at UFC 104.”

Winner of 14 of his last 15 professional fights, Ben Rothwell (fighting out of Davenport, Iowa) has the credentials to touch gloves with anyone in the heavyweight division. Despite fighting all around the world, this seasoned heavyweight – who owns wins over Krzysztof Soszynski and Roy Nelson - will make his Octagon debut when he faces the decorated former college wrestler. At 6-foot-5, 265 lbs., Rothwell can definitely create a stir in the UFC’s ultra-stacked heavyweight division.

“I’ve been in this fight game for 10 years and I can’t tell you how excited I am to finally be competing in the UFC,” Rothwell said. “It’s the reason I started fighting in the first place. I’m very grateful that they would give me such an established opponent in my first match. Cain’s a tough guy and I’m looking forward to putting on a great show.”

About WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 – Creative and Online Freedom

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 will introduce a new Create-a-Superstar Mode, including a fresh look, all-new 3-D parts and improved graphical quality, allowing players to create Superstars and Divas who are comparable in quality with their in-game WWE counterparts. Adding to the creative mix, a new Paint Tool will enable detailed creation of tattoos, logos and other unique designs, while a franchise-first Superstar Threads feature will let players create alternate ring gear for Superstars and Divas by customizing the colors of shirts, pants, face paint, elbow pads, boots and more. The game’s Create-a-Finisher Mode will now let players create acrobatic and gravity-defying diving attacks from the top turnbuckle, as well as move their creations to new heights by adjusting the trajectory. In addition, the mode will deliver an extensive assortment of new moves from the front grapple position.

Taking creativity even further, WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 will also mark the debut of the WWE Story Designer. Players will also be able to construct each night’s show card with matches, unique match stipulations, interference events and other story twists and turns.

In addition, a robust talent roster will include more than 60 playable Superstars and Divas, many of whom will make their videogame debut, as they represent the Raw, SmackDown and ECW® brands. A high-profile soundtrack rounds out the gameplay experience, including “Still Unbroken,” the new single from Lynyrd Skynyrd’s upcoming album, God & Guns, as well as songs from artists such as Skillet, Sick Puppies, Adelita’s Way and Trivium.

FULL 12-BOUT CARD FINALIZED FOR "HDNET FIGHTS PRESENTS M-1 GLOBAL BREAKTHROUGH"

Source - M-1 Global:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -

Kansas City, Kansas - With less than one week to go until Friday's "HDNET FIGHTS PRESENTS M-1 GLOBAL BREAKTHROUGH" event live from the historic Memorial Hall in Kansas City, M-1 Global officials have released the final 12-bout card.
With six televised bouts scheduled to air during the HDNet telecast (10:00 p.m. ET, check local listings for channel availability) plus a special sparring exhibition between M-1 fighters Fedor Emelianenko and newly-crowned Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Gegard Mousasi, a five-bout undercard has been assembled for the local crowd planning to attend (doors open at 7:00 p.m. CT).

With its main card anchored by the United States debut of former NCAA champion "King" Mo Lawal and former NCAA All-American Mark "The Smashing Machine" Kerr, the undercard will be headlined by 8-1 Spanish heavyweight sensation Rogent Lloret taking on the latest addition to the M-1 Global roster, Russian heavyweight Alexey Oleinik.

Also featured on the undercard will be a dynamic lightweight matchup between Eric Marriott (13-1, fighting out of Lees Summit, Missouri) and Tim Bazer (9-6, fighting out of Omaha, Nebraska). Training out of Team Grindhouse, rumors have been circulating that the gifted Marriott is currently being scouted by World Extreme Cagefighting and Strikeforce. As such, Marriott's fight vs. Bazer this Friday could be his last in the Kansas City region for quite some time.

Also scheduled for the undercard is an intriguing lightweight matchup between veteran Sean "P-Town" Wilson (18-9, fighting out of Omaha, Nebraska) and multi-time Army Combatives champion Josh Orocho (11-6, fighting out of Manhattan, Kansas).

Additionally, welterweight Rudy Bears (9-3, fighting out of Kansas City, Missouri) will look to test himself versus nine-year veteran Brendan Seguin (18-5, fighting out of Detroit, Michigan). Seguin, coming off a recent first round TKO victory over former UFC veteran Ryan Madigan, has his sights on ending Bears' five-fight win streak in front of Bears' friends and family.

Opening the card will be a special female attraction contested at 150 lbs. featuring the professional MMA debut of 2007 WKA Amateur Muay Thai Champion and multi-time Grappler's Quest winner Andria Caplan vs. rising Kansas City fight prospect Mollie Ahlers-Estes (1-0).

Tickets to the event are still available at all local Ticketmaster outlets and Ticketmaster.com. The complete finalized card is listed below:

12. Heavyweight (3x5): Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal (4-0) vs. Mark "The Smashing Machine" Kerr (15-10)

New Documentary Examines Wrestling History, Homoeroticism, And Homophobia

Source - Rook Communications:

Stronghold: In the Grip of Wrestling, examines the growing number of men who wrestle as adults, and the social stigmas they encounter. All styles of wrestling are included: amateur wrestling, pro wrestling, and submission grappling.

Washington, D.C., August 23, 2009 -- Stronghold: In the Grip of Wrestling, examines the growing number of men who wrestle as adults, and the social stigmas they encounter. It talks frankly about wrestling homoeroticism and homophobia, historically through today, and the many reasons wrestling has become such an
underappreciated sport in America. All styles of wrestling are included: amateur wrestling, pro wrestling, and submission grappling.

The documentary pulls no punches when talking about sensitive subjects. Several men discuss how they have been sexually attracted to wrestling since they were kids, and how the age-old fear of getting an erection in a singlet prevented them from wrestling in school. They share stories about sneaking peeks at library wrestling books and wrestling magazines, watching it on TV and being mesmerized by the guys in tight trunks, or getting aroused while wrestling their friends. Many grew up with shame for these feelings, and now think that they have to hide their wrestling as adults. Through the Internet and nationwide wrestling events, thousands of adult men are discovering they are not alone.

But the documentary covers much more: How wrestling was once one of the most popular sports for adult men in the U.S., the effects of Title IX on collegiate wrestling, and how WWE altered pro wrestling (Vince McMahon meets an untimely death in the film). The growing sport of Jiu-Jitsu is also examined as a much-needed outlet for
grown men to grapple.

Award-winning filmmaker, Victor Rook, wanted to make sure that the documentary was all-inclusive, so wrestlers both gay and straight-identified, single and married, were interviewed. The documentary takes you back stage at a pro indy show, inside amateur wrestling tournaments, a jiu-jitsu school, and several wrestling events specifically geared for adult men. He even pulls people out of bars and truck stops to wrestle in a portion of the film noted as 'The Great Wrestling Road Trip.'

"I came out of this film with a unique understanding of how similar most men are, regardless of sexuality. There is a need for close physical contact among men as adults, and wrestling provides that," says Mr. Rook.

Cause Of Death For Frank Fertitta Jr.

According to The Associated Press, which quoted a family spokeswoman, Frank Fertitta Jr. had a preexisting heart condition, and related complications were cited as the cause of his death.

RIP: Frank Fertitta Jr.

Earlier today, seventy-one-year-old Frank Fertitta Jr. passed away of yet-unlisted causes.

Fertitta Jr. was never directly involved in pro wrestling or mixed-martial-arts, but ended up being very instrumental in the latter's future, for without his power and vast fortune, who knows if Frank (III) and Lorenzo would've ever been able to get their hands on the juggernaut that is the UFC.

DVD Review: Guest Booker With Jim Cornette – Rebooking The Invasion Angle

Source - Main Event Radio's Steven Wilson:

If there was one angle that will forever be begging for a re-do it would have to be WWE’s Invasion angle in the early 2000’s. Kayfabe Commentaries Guest Booker series was designed for this type of fantasy booking, However rebooking the invasion angle could not be left to any simple talent who has dabbled in a booking committee or been given the book because of who they are related to. Instead only one man could truly tackle this topic and do it the way it should have been done, and that man happens to be one of the most requested guests for the Guest Booker series, none other than Jim Cornette. Now we all get the chance to hear not only Cornette’s uncensored rants against the WWE but we also get to hear how he would of booked the invasion angle in the latest installment of the critically acclaimed series.

The DVD’s back cover informs the fans that “this is the big one” and indeed it is. Spanning 3 hours and 2 discs, this is classic Cornette and a classic angle to re book. There is no arguing that the WWE drop the ball with the Invasion angle and Jim Cornette lets it be known loud and clear.

The DVD begins with a chapter entitled “Background” In this Cornette discusses a wide variety of topics including the differences between Wrestling booking & Wrestling writing, which bookers influenced him in his career as well as what everyday business was like in Jim Crocket Promotions. Cornette also brushes over what is wrong with the business today, As you would expect Cornette gives an impression that he could go on for hours about that subject but instead only partakes in a few specific rants. Including what should happen when “creative has nothing” for a talent.

The most interesting topic discussed in the opening chapters of the DVD is how and why Ohio Valley Wrestling was established as an official developmental territory of the WWE. Cornette talks about the differences between Jim Ross and John Laurinaitis as the head of talent relations and how much of a headache it was to deal with Laurinaitis who treated OVW like a piece of crap.

From there they discuss the Invasion and what went wrong. Host Sean Oliver joking says good night and makes a motion as if he was going to walk off at this point as he knew proposing this question would open a whole new can of worms for Cornette to rant on. The expected arguments are made by Cornette and although he makes a thousand points he does so in a quick fashion which doesn’t affect the flow of the DVD at all.

If you look back to statements made around the time WWE acquired WCW, it was suggested that the WWE and WCW would both continue to exist as separate entities owned by the same company. In real life that would not turn out to be the case as Vince McMahon would never allow another company to be viewed as equal to his, but the separate and equal brands is the basis of Cornette’s booking vision as we embark on the Re-booking chapters of the program.

Establishing separate brands which not only run their own feuds on a weekly basis, but also creates an on going war between the two with certain crossover storylines that slowly but surely gets more and more heated while lasting for an extended run, culminating at Wrestlemania the next year with a 16 match interpromotional war between WCW and WWE where the company who wins the most matches get to keep their job Host Sean Oliver like many of you who will watch this DVD sits back in awe of Cornette’s work of art as he brushes it stroke by stroke.

I wont divulge the card as the “fantasy” spoiler would be pointless, but just to say that Im sure some of us could come up with some dream matches that Cornette does not come up in this DVD, But his work of art compared to the piece of crap that the WWE put out will leave you scratching your head as to why the WWE didn’t put the booking power into Cornette’s hands at the time.

This is hands down the best installment of the Guest Booker series to date, and is up there as one of the best releases put out by Kayfabe Commentaries to date. As you would expect Cornette holds nothing back when criticizing what he believes was wrong and is still wrong with the WWE, and shows a enthusiasm for the scene he’s setting that has never before been seen in this DVD series. Host Sean Oliver even admits at the end of the episode that any future Guest Bookers have a lot to live up to. This is an absolute must watch. I cant say much more than that.

Guest Booker with Jim Cornette – Rebooking The Invasion Angle will be available on DVD next week from Kayfabe Commentaries, For more information or to order your own copy head on over to www.kayfabecommentaries.com and to check out my previous DVD reviews head on over to www.wrestlingdvdreview.com
