GEORGIA WRESTLING NEWS, NOTES, AND NOSTALGIA: 12/05/2007

NEWS

Gangrel has had to reschedule his January 20 appearance for Georgia Wrestling Promotions, and had now been booked for the December 23 event. Also, Scotty Too Hotty has been booked for an event being booked for February 29.

NOTES

Happy birthday to Adrian Street (67), Larry Zbyszko (54) and the Dynamite Kid (49).

NOSTALGIA

1947: Al Massey defeated Jack Hader in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones.

1952: Argentina Rocca defeated Eduardo Perez, substituting for Gene Stanlee, in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones.

1956: Jerry Graham defeated Freddie Blassie in the main event at the William Bell Auditorium in Augusta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Tom Mahoney.

1958: A main event match between Paul Anderson & Chief Little Eagle and Freddie Blassie & Dick the Bruiser was ruled a no contest at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones.

1961: Nick & Jerry Kozak defeated Jerry Graham & Bulldog Lawley in the main event at the Macon City Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward.

1962: Lenny Montana defeated Chief Little Eagle by disqualification in the main event at the Columbus Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward.

1967: Bill Dromo & Mr. Wrestling defeated the Gauchos (Juan Sebastian & Tarzan Baxter) by disqualification in the main event at the Macon City Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward.

1969: Ray Gunkel & Buddy Fuller defeated the Assassins to retain the Georgia Tag Team Title at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Gunkel & Fuller had been the reigning champions since they defeated the Assassins on October 10, 1969, in Atlanta.

1970: Bobby Shane defeated Kubla Khan, managed by ‘Dandy’ Jack Crawford, by disqualification to retain the Georgia Television Title at the WQXI Studios in Atlanta for the “Atlanta TV Wrestling” television program hosted by Ed Capral. Shane had been the reigning champion since he defeated Nick Bockwinkel on August 15, 1970, in Atlanta.

1972: Buddy Colt defeated Eddie Graham to retain the Southern Heavyweight Title at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Colt had been billed as Southern Heavyweight Champion since November 28, 1972.

1972: Dick Steinborn & Argentina Apollo defeated the Hollywood Blonds (Jerry Brown & Buddy Roberts) in the main event at the Savannah Civic Center for All-South Wrestling Alliance promoter Aaron Newman.

1975: Jack Brisco defeated the Spoiler, managed by Gary Hart, to retain the NWA World Heavyweight Title at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Brisco had been the reigning champion since he defeated Giant Baba on December 9, 1974, in Toyohashi, Japan.

1976: WTCG debuted a new highlights program called “Best of Georgia Championship Wrestling,” which will air on Sundays from 6:00 to 7:00 PM on Channel 17. This show was hosted by Gordon Solie, and other than a few interviews he did with wrestlers each week, it was simply taped matches from the Saturday show, and occasionally matches from other promotions as well. The first episode featured a young Vincent Kennedy McMahon co-hosting with Solie.
