WSU 11/29 Results w/TNA, Ex WWF/WCW/ECW Stars, Top Indy Women & More

Courtesy of Women Superstars Uncensored:

Quick WSU 11/29 results in front of 200+ in New Brunswick, NJ:

WSU Tag Team Champions The Beatdown Betties (Roxxie Cotton & Annie Social) d. The Soul Sisters (Jana & Latasha) to retain the WSU Tag Team Titles. After the match, Jana walked out on Latasha. Recently fired Rick Cataldo was at ringside after purchasing a ticket and having a seat in the front row.

Miss April w/Gorgeous George d. Lea Morrison

Former 2-time WSU Champion Alicia greeted the crowd and talked about the huge title match on 1/10. The lights went out and a mysterious voice said they were coming to WSU on 1/10. The lights went back on, begging the question, just who is coming to WSU on 1/10?

The Bad Ass Beauties Melissa Coates & Trixie Lynn d. Reyna Fire & The Debuting Brooke Carter

During a live edition of Missy's manor, Portia Perez challenged Mercedes Martinez, where if Portia was successful tonight, Portia would be entered into the cage match on 1/10, making the cage a triple threat match. The Beatdown Betties came out to run down TNA & Traci Brooks. Traci Brooks came out and a match between Annie Social & Traci Brooks was made.

Traci Brooks d. Annie Social w/Roxxie Cotton
During the finish of the match, Rick Cataldo ran in from the crowd and interfered. His interference backfired and cost Annie the match. Annie ordered security to kick him out of the building and he was tossed. Annie did a promo stating that Rick no longer has affiliation with the Betties & she doesn't want to see his face again in WSU.

In the Main Event
In a Match that went 35 Minutes
Mercedes Martinez d. Portia Perez with a finish reminiscent of the 1992 Bulldog/Hart Summerslam match. Portia went for a sunset flip, but Mercedes sat down and hooked Portia's legs win. This was a great match and maybe one of the best in-ring matches WSU has had all year, in this first time ever battle. Even the WSU DVD table was sacrificed!

We will have more soon.
Check DOIVideo.com for details on an eventual DVD release and WSUWrestling.com for all the latest up-to-date WSU news.

WSU thanks everyone for coming out and hopes everyone had a good time.

11/28 Prime Time Pro Wrestling Report: Swinger Debuts

Courtesy of Larry Goodman:

Johnny Swinger made a shocking debut for NWA Prime Time Pro Wrestling Friday night in Columbus.

Until the moment a masked Swinger hit the ring to join the invaders from Great Championship Wrestling, he was the biggest name star on the GCW roster, a position he had held since his departure from WWE.

It’s a hell of angle. For several weeks, Sonny Siaki had been wreaking havoc in Prime Time, while still claiming to work for their bitter rival, GCW. Last week, Siaki grabbed Tracy Taylor as a hostage and threatened to break her neck. Promoter Billy Roper agreed to close down the company if David Young didn’t beat Siaki in a match. Siaki agreed to go back across the river to GCW if he lost. Well, Siaki lost but he lied about leaving, and now Swinger and Zero Tolerance have joined the invasion.

Whether Swinger coming in proves to be a good business decision for Prime Time is another thing altogether. Only time and the depth of Roper’s pocketbook will tell. It was almost certainly a good business decision for GCW to jettison Swinger, as he was no doubt the highest paid guy on their roster.

PTPW drew a disappointing 140 to the Prime Time Arena for the ultimate high stakes stipulation. What more can you put up than the very existence of your company? The subpar crowd is more, I think, a sign of changing times than a fault of the angle. Sadly, the days when holiday weekends meant big crowds for wrestling have come and gone. If anything, holiday weekends appear to be a negative at this point.

The crowd was on fire for the main event and all the hoopla afterwards. However, they never fully turned up the heat until then, as a lackluster undercard gave them little reason to do so. A certain group of knowledgeable regular attendees said it was only overall bad show since David Young started booking.

(1) Simon Sermon & Thomas Britain beat the Iceberg & Deathrow to retain the PTWP Tag Team Championship in 9:15. Being that it was matchup of heel teams, the heat was less than optimal. The Brits had title belts wrapped in British flags, the deal being they planned to take the titles across the river (to GCW) when their contacts expired after next Friday. Sermon was his usual entertaining self. The prospect of locking up with Iceberg had him chewing his nails. The monsters decimated Britain. Sermon had to made save after save. But the problems between Iceberg and Deathrow came to a head Iceberg “accidentally” got clocked by Deathrow. Iceberg retaliated with a lariat, Sermon pounced on top of Deathrow for the three count. Sermon then loaded Britain onto his back and ran out with the belts. Funny stuff.

Iceberg briefly took possession of both the NWA Anarchy Heavyweight belt and Deathrow’s PTPW Heavyweight belt over his head.

(2) Frankie Valentine beat Josh Stone in 9:30. The crowd popped for Valentine’s entrance. He can go face of heel. Match wasn’t bad, but it was babyface vs. babyface, and the crowd wasn’t feeling it once the bell rang. After a missed slingshot move by Valentine, Stone went to work on his shoulder. Valentine made the comeback and after wrestling clean the entire match, Stone raked the eyes. Why now? Finish saw Valentine block a superplex and pin Stone with a super sunset flip.

Sermon carried Britain back out to the ring. Sermon told Roper he had just witnessed an example of the Brits’ domination. Britain was still out of it. He crawled across the ring to grab onto to Roper’s pant leg. Sermon said they were “going across the river” in one more week. With that, Sermon carried Britain and the title belts to the back.

(3) Genni Wright beat Tracy Taylor in 9:10. This match had the wrong kind of heat. Wright was wearing the worst possible gear for her body type, and she got ripped to shreds by a decidedly sadistic element in the crowd. It didn’t help that she also stinks as a wrestler. It was originally booked as a tag (see notes below), where they may have been able to hide Wright’s shortcomings. Just maybe. Wright heeled. The crowd got behind Tracy, who hit a powerslam to spark a comeback. Wright pinned Tracy using the tights. You’ve got to be freaking kidding me. Not only is Tracy a regular, she had already pinned two of their male wrestlers. No freaking this girl should beat her.

Intermission.

(4) Killer Instinct (Mike Stratus & Jake Slater) beat Chip Day & Kyle Matthews in 9:40. The undersized babyface team came out flying. It was the most into the show this crowd had been all night. They worked on the leg of Stratus and then the arm of Slater. Matthews took the heat. Stratus was good here. He’s a solid heel – a stocky grizzled veteran type. Mathews went through the legs to make the hot tag. Day hit a double missile dropkick and cleaned house, but ended up on the wrong end of a slice ‘n dice legdrop by Stratus.

(5) Micah Taylor beat Travis Sawyer (with Tony Lucassio) in 13:18. This match had the best true wrestling content, and that was 90% Micah. Make no mistake, the guy is a great wrestler. Every hold applied in a realistic manner. The heat was so-so. I don’t think the fans saw Sawyer as a legitimate threat to beat one of Prime Time’s top guys. Sawyer needs to get in better shape if he’s going to make a deal out of being Buzz’s son. I was a huge mark for Sawyer when he was the man in Georgia Championship Wrestling. They talk about his feud with Tommy Rich, but with all due respect, none of those matches could hold a candle to his chain match with Roddy Piper in the Omni. But I digress. Lucassio got “shut up” heat on the mic. Taylor did some stellar work on Sawyer’s leg, the highlight being the surfboard leglock. With Lucassio providing the distraction, Sawyer delivered a knee to the back that sent Micah through the ropes. Sawyer worked over Micah’s back. Ref Rob Russo caught Sawyer using the ropes on a pin attempt. Micah then kicked out of Sawyer’s powerslam. The crowd revved up for Micah’s comeback. Sawyer did a rhino like charge into the turnbuckles and Micah rolled him up. Sawyer did the sore loser back jumping thing after the match.

(6) Bulldog Raines beat Colt Derringer in a cowbell on a bullrope match (12:34). It was OK, but there was something missing, mainly, the expected brutality. The cowbell barley figured into the match. The first man to touch all four corners in succession would be the winner. Raines controlled the early portion of the match via inventive use of the rope. He got three touches before being cut of by Derringer’s rope lariat. Derringer gave Raines a few cowbell shots to the back. Derringer hit a middle rope legdrop and they did the deal where both men touch 3 corners. They got into a tug of war as Derringer strained to make the fourth corner. They needed a shorter rope to make it believable. Raines speared Derringer. Raines hit a Blue Thunder Bomb, an impressive move on man Derringer’s size that appeared to suck out all the energy he had. Raines put the rope around Derringer’s neck and dragged him to three corners with both men touching. A not so monumental struggle ensued and Raines managed to make the fourth touch.

Postmatch: Derringer bludgeoned Raines with the cowbell and hung him over the top rope. Day, Matthews and Valentine came out to make the save.

Intermission number two. Micah and Tracy Taylor out for autographs and so forth.

Before the main event, Roper called for quiet, so he could explain the gravity of the situation. He thanked the fans for their support in case this was it for PTPW.

(7) David Young beat Sonny Siaki via DQ when his masked accomplice, revealed as Zero Tolerance, interfered at 11 minutes. The heat was off the hook for this match. Siaki entered through a side door carrying a 2 x 4. He knocked a heckler on his ass and decked a security guard. Siaki was accompanied by Tolerance in a ski mask. Ringside fans that attended GCW shows recognized him. There aren’t many dudes that size walking around. This action quickly spilled outside the ring. Roper got in a cheap shot on Siaki. Young sent Siaki flying through a section of ringside seats. Young tried to come off the apron with a huracanrana, and Siaki slammed his head into a chair. Siaki clocked Young with a fire extinguisher and got a two count on the floor. Somebody made it falls count anywhere, I guess. Inside the ring, Young kicked out of a DDT on the chair. Young kicked out. Siaki choked Young with his GCW hoodie. The crowd was pleading for Young to make a comeback. Siaki superkicked Young, and he kicked out again. Young hit a tornado kick and then the spinebuster, The masked dude attacked ref Rob Russo for the DQ.

Tolerance gave Young a full nelson slam and took off his mask. Chris Stevens ran out to save his partner (why wasn’t he at ringside watching Young’s back?), but he was beaten down, and both members of Bad Company got laid out with flapjacks. Another second masked man in a leather jacket came in through the back door with a baseball bat. By this time, Roper had jumped into the ring, and the masked guy jabbed him in the gut with the baseball bat. Masked man #2 revealed himself to be Swinger. The carnage continued with Young, Stevens, Roper and Russo all left laying. Siaki said GCW would be back next week. Swinger said they were taking over. The invaders exited through the back door of the arena. Young addressed the invaders while he was still down in the ring. “Don’t walk away, cuz I’m still breathing.” Young said the GCW guys would have to kill him. Young said Bad Company would be back and they were bringing hell with them.

That sets up Bad Company (Young & Stevens & Bull Buchanan) vs. Siaki & Swinger & Tolerance for December 5.

In an appalling lack of attention to detail, Roper conducted the show closing raffle. The rumbling in the distance wasn’t thunder; it was the sound of countless old school bookers rolling in their graves. I’m not saying Roper didn’t sell the beating, because he definitely did, but his recuperative powers were superior to the wrestlers. Either do the raffle at intermission, or better yet, have some poor grief-stricken PTPW employee do it, while Roper is being carried to the back. It’s a given that today’s fans don’t buy this stuff as real. Doing things the proper way may not sell tickets, but there’s still a right way and a wrong way to do things.

NOTES: The women’s tag match originally advertised,: Taylor & Daffney vs. Wright & April O’Neil was pared down to a singles match…Day is known as “Do or Die” Chip Day. He has Mountain Dew gear and guzzles a can of that nasty stuff on his way to the ring…The second intermission came at 10pm. The late start (7:55 advertised as 7:30) is problematic if you’re going to do two intermissions. They got away with doing a three hour show and not burning out the crowd this time, but it’s a dangerous habit to get into…Talent currently performing for PTPW that formerly worked for GCW in Phenix City include Siaki, Swinger, Tolerance, Young, Stevens, the Taylors and Bull Buchanan…Complete card for 12/5: Bad Company vs. GCW Invaders, Raines vs. Shaun Tempers, Sermon & Britain defend the tag titles against Valentine & Ace Rockwell, Iceberg & Deathrow vs. Killer Instinct, Day & El Loco vs. Micah & Tracy Taylor, Wrestler vs. Colt Derringer.

Review Of New World Wrestling Insanity Book

Courtesy of Alan J. Wojcik:

Just when you thought World Wrestling Insanity author James Guttman was taken away in a straight jacket by the WWE political correctness police he returns with a new book. This one is called World Wrestling Insanity presents: Shoot First…And Ask Questions Later (ECW Press, 216pp, $19.95). Thanks to the success of his debut book and the website he runs of the same name, Mr. Guttman created an internet based radio show called Radio Free Insanity with one goal in mind, interview former and current professional wrestlers in an uncensored environment (currently posted on the site is former WWE/ECW star Nunzio.) In addition he created an archive site called www.ClubWWI.com which is a pay service; I believe $4.99 a month. In addition to Mr. Guttman and friends; several wrestlers like D’Lo Brown, Bull Buchanan, Lisa "Ivory" Moretti, Kevin Kelly and Orlando Jordan contributed columns or their own internet based broadcasts.

Like the Between the Ropes radio show based out of Orlando, Florida did a few years ago; this book is a collection using snippets of the more than 100 interviews Mr. Guttman has conducted with legends like Nick Bockwinkel, Dory Funk Jr. Bruno Sammartino, Jerry "the King" Lawler, Harley Race as well as current stars like AJ Styles, Rhino and Christian Cage to name a few. Plus mix in executives and creative staff like Les Thatcher, Eric Bischoff and Tod Gordon and you have some great stories to read. Current Florida Championship Wrestling (WWE Developmental) head trainer and also a WWI.com contributor Dr. Tom Pritchard gives the introduction and he doesn’t surprise this reviewer when he reveals that he is an asshole who had no clue why he was asked to do the introduction.

As someone who has been conducting interviews since 2001 (insert shameless plug for http://alanwojcik.com here), I was interested to read how someone else researches their subjects, the legwork in getting them to sit down (Mr. Guttman chased some for years like Bobby Heenan) and the process involved in getting it to the internet for broadcast. I must commend him on the wide variety of interview subjects. Like the people mentioned above plus Kevin Nash, Damien Demento, Corporal Kirschner, "the Missing Link" Dewey Robertson, Bad News Allen, Scott Steiner and extra kudos for surviving an interview with former Four Horseman member Ole Anderson who takes Guttman to the proverbial woodshed, for what reason I have no idea and I read the book. I will not spoil the surprises that lay inside the book but I will say Mr. Guttman will never be invited to the McMahon Christmas party but I doubt he cares as his web show guest list gets bigger and better each week.

You can buy this book in major retailers or online at www.ecwpress.com or www.worldwrestlinginsanity.com

Alan Wojcik Review Of The Great Debate 08 DVD

Did you get to the polls on Election Day? Your vote created history as Barack Obama became President of the United States. Now the folks who run www.kayfabecommentaries.com are asking you to cast your vote, this time for Race or Sammartino. Your probably thinking who and what are you talking about? Well the company that produces My Side of the Story and Guest Booker brought together multi-time NWA World Heavyweight champion Harley Race and two-time WWWF World Heavyweight champion Bruno Sammartino for The Great Debate ’08.

Unlike the Presidential and VP debates from October, this debate is friendly, entertaining and educational. Host Sean Oliver introduces the two men then asks the questions leaving the talking to the former World champions. To be upfront this is one of the best DVD’s not produced by RF Video, WWE or TNA this year. Mr. Race and Mr. Sammartino are given free reign to speak on a variety of topics including: which was the better wrestling city; St Louis or New York, what made Vince McMahon Sr. and Sam Muchnick great promoters, what makes a great babyface/villain, what makes a great champion and the always fun question, is "Nature Boy" Ric Flair the greatest World Heavyweight champion of all-time. The one draw back on this presentation is there are no chapters, so if you begin it and stop it completely you will have to begin again and fast forward to your spot. But who cares because you will not want to stop the DVD.

Both men have no reason to leave none of the subjects unanswered. Mr. Sammartino shocked me when he admitted he hasn’t watch wrestling for years. If memory serves Mr. Race runs a training school and promotion in the mid-west and talks to the viewer like Sammartino, he was teaching a master’s class on the sport of wrestling. After the presentation, Mr. Oliver returns and asks you to place a vote on the company website for the legend you felt represented their promotion and championship the best. That vote I will leave up to you as I feel the debate is too close to call and I vote for both men to have wings in the Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame, shame the WWE will possibly never induct Mr. Sammartino. But then again didn’t some guy named Hart go in a couple of years ago?

CARLOS NEWTON RETURNS TO CANADA TO HEADLINE W1: INCEPTION VERSUS NABIL KHATIB

Courtesy of Warrior-1 MMA:

(GATINEAU, QUEBEC) -- Warrior-1 MMA in co-operation Premier Entertainment are pleased to announce their debut event on March 28th, 2009 at the Robert Guertin Arena in Gatineau, Quebec. The event “W1: INCEPTION” will mark the unveiling of Canada’s newest MMA promotion and is expected to make a huge splash on the Canadian scene.

In a fight, thirteen years in the making, CARLOS ‘THE RONIN’ NEWTON will be headlining the event in his first fight on Canadian soil since 1996. Newton made his MMA debut on April 26th, 1996 in Montreal and his career has taken him to every corner of the globe, but has never made a return to Canada. The first ever Canadian UFC Champion and former number one ranked fighter in the world, Newton has faced almost every superstar of his era including Kazushi Sakuraba, Pat Miletich, Matt Hughes, Jose Landi-Jons, Anderson Silva, Renzo Gracie and Matt Lindland. Now Newton is looking to make his mark against the new breed of MMA talent that has hit the scene in the last few years.

"I have been away from MMA for some time now and I couldn't be more excited to be back. It only seems right to make my return in my home country and with a great organization like Warrior One,” said Newton regarding his MMA return.

Standing in Newton’s way, is one of Canada’s top welterweights, Ottawa’s own NABIL ‘THE THRILL’ KHATIB. Khatib has a win over UFC veteran Gideon Ray and has faced some of the world’s most talented athletes. The veteran Khatib has seen everything there is in the martial arts world and is expecting to spoil Newton’s Canadian homecoming. An extremely popular fighter in the Gatineau/Ottawa area, Khatib is expected to have a lot of his fans cheering him on against the popular Newton.

The Co-Main Event will see two of Canada’s top rising lightweight stars. MARK ‘BOOTS’ HOLST from Ottawa will take his undefeated record against the experienced, but still young MARTIN ‘THE HAMMER’ GRANDMONT from Drummondville. Considered two of the top strikers in Canada, this fight has fireworks written all over it. This fight has been discussed for a long time and both fighters are excited to finally see who is the most talented warrior.

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – World Extreme Cagefighting® today announced the remainder of an already stellar fight card for WEC®: Torres vs. Tapia, live from The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas on Wednesday, December 3. Featured on the undercard will be Shane Roller vs. Michael Budnik, Hiroyuki Takaya vs. Cub Swanson, Bart Palaszewski vs. Alex Karalexis, Diego Nunes vs. Cole Province, Mark Munoz vs. Ricardo Barros and Johny Hendricks vs. Justin Haskins.

World Extreme Cagefighting will be televised live nationally on VERSUS beginning at 8:00 pm ET/5:00 pm PT. All live WEC events will be presented in Hi-Definition (HD) where available. For more information and how to find VERSUS in your local viewing area, visit http://www.versus.com/findversus.

Tickets are available at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino box office and all Ticketmaster locations. To charge by phone with a major credit card, call Ticketmaster at (702) 474-4000. Tickets also are available online through www.wec.tv or www.ticketmaster.com.

Las Vegas trained fighter Shane Roller (5’10”/155 lbs.) won’t have to travel far when he faces Brooklyn, NY native Mike Budnik (5’8”/155 lbs.). The former three-time Oklahoma State All-American wrestler looks to build on the submission victory in his WEC debut and stop the undefeated Budnik (8-0), who earned a triangle-choke submission win in his first WEC fight.

It’s tough to be called a veteran at 25, but with a 12-2 mixed martial arts record and three WEC fights already under his belt, Cub Swanson (5’7”/145 lbs.) has the experience to ascend right up the featherweight division. The Orange County, California fighter dropped his last match to a rejuvenated Jens Pulver but now focuses his attention on Chiba, Japan’s Hiroyuki Takaya (5’6”/145 lbs.), who looks to rebound from his debut loss to featherweight contender Leonard Garcia.

In what could be an immediate Fight of the Night candidate, MMA veteran Bart Palaszewski (5’9”/155 lbs.) puts his 29-11 record up against Boston native Alex Karalexis (5’8”/155 lbs.). If the two heavy-handed fighters decide to stand and trade, this one could be an instant classic.

With both fighters still claiming undefeated records, there’s plenty on the line when Diego Nunes (5’8”/145 lbs.) meets up with Oklahoma’s Cole Province (5’9”/145 lbs.). Brazil’s Nunes (11-0) will make his WEC debut, but already has six submission victories with five coming via guillotine choke. But Province (6-0) won’t be lost on the ground; the 27-year-old was a four-time NCAA Division II national wrestling champion at the University of Central Oklahoma.

In a light heavyweight matchup, Sacramento, California’s Mark Munoz (6’0”/205 lbs.) puts his 4-0 record on the line against Brentwood, California’s Ricardo Barros (6’1”/205 lbs.). Barros, a Sao Paulo, Brazil born fighter, is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt that has compiled a 4-1 MMA record and makes his WEC debut against the former NCAA Division I national champion wrestler.

Speaking of top-level wrestlers on this fight card, Las Vegas’ Johny Hendricks would have to be thrown into the mix as well. The Ada, Oklahoma born fighter was a two-time NCAA national champion and a four-time All-American at Oklahoma State University and now puts his 3-0 MMA record up against Red Bank, New Jersey native Justin Haskins in what will be both fighters’ WEC debuts. Haskins, who carries a 5-1 record, now trains out of Jupiter, Florida and holds a Brazilian jiu-jitsu purple belt under UFC fighter Kurt Pellegrino.

The WEC also announced that, starting in 2009, the organization will focus on four weight classes: welterweight (170 pounds), lightweight (155 pounds), featherweight (145 pounds), and bantamweight (135 pounds). The WEC will no longer actively promote light heavyweight and middleweight fights after the Dec. 3rd event. This increased attention to the sport’s lighter divisions makes the WEC the undisputed home of the most exciting lighter weight fighters in mixed martial arts.

All bouts subject to change. For more information about WEC: Torres vs. Tapia and current WEC fight news, visit www.wec.tv.

BIG VITO’S FIRST MMA FIGHT – A LEARNING EXPERIENCE

Courtesy of Karyn Glubis:

November 26, 2008
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Tampa, FL – Without the press present and no big build up or hoopla, Big Vito (Vito LoGrasso) won his first Mixed Martial Arts fight in the Dominican Republic. The fight went 3 rounds with Vito winning on a decision.

“The Wrestling Business has been on a down slide, so I finally decided to get off the couch and do it!” Said Vito, “It was a huge learning experience! MMA is no joke. It is to be taken seriously and is not something for the average person with no experience to do. It takes a lot of commitment and training.”

The whole event had little glitz and glamour and not a lot of people present. Vito had been discussing doing the transition for over a year but continues to wrestle with Independents and Nu Wrestling Evolution in Europe.

“You have to have heart, determination and skills,” said Vito. “I am happy to know that if I wanted to do this on a full time basis, I could be successful.” It says a lot for The Toughest Man to Ever Wear a Dress.

Big Vito does not have the Amateur Wrestling status that most do who switch fields but he survived his first fight. He returned to the US with a couple black eyes and bruised ribs.

For more information or to book Big Vito please contact vitobookings@yahoo.com.

About Big Vito:

Vito LoGrasso (Big Vito) is a professional wrestler best known for his prior work as “The Toughest Man to Ever Wear a Dress” for World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) and as Big Vito for World Championship Wreslting (WCW). He has also wrestled under the persona of Skull Von Krush and for other companies including ECW and TNA. Vito currently wrestles with Nu Wrestling Evolution (NWE) in Europe.

SAW TV Review - Episode 69

Courtesy of Larry Goodman:

Showtime Allstar Wrestling – Episode 69
Airing on November 8, 2008 in Nashville on Comcast 74
Taped on September 21, 2008 at the SAW Mill in Millersville, Tn

This week’s show opened with Marc Anthony addressing the heavens in battle gear from the driver’s seat of a World War II tank. “White Rabbit” playing the background.

As I peer across this field, in which a battle will soon rage, I see to the east the silhouette of a man, a man darker than this world has ever seen…They’re going to stand their ground. My son, stand yours firmly. For tonight, I shall join you in this battle. I shall join you on this field. Tonight, the king returns.

Anthony barked like the tortured soul that he is.

Right to the entrance of Raven being treated like the second coming by Michael St. John and Reno Riggins on commentary. Someone has gone way overboard with the fog machine again.

1 – RAVEN vs. HAMMERJACK (with Rick Santel)

Ravens opened with punches and serious mudhole stomping, and he’s bristling with energy. Hammerjack took over while the camera was panning the crowd. Santel gave Hammerjack a chair, but he coughed it up to Raven, who used it to execute his signature drop toehold chair spot. Raven signaled to the crowd before planting Hammerjack with the Evenflow.

WINNER: Raven in 2:24 with the Evenflow DDT, as Santel runs his record to 0-3 as Paul Adams’ surrogate.

SAW International Champion Jerry Lynn returns in two weeks.

2 – CHRISJEN HAYME (with Shawn Shultz) vs. DREW HASKINS

Haskins controlled the action with a nice display of basic mat-based wrestling, but when he went to the air with a springboard crossbody, Hayme turned it into a gutbuster. Hayme did a number on the midsection of Haskins, and made it clear he didn’t need any instruction from Shultz. Hayme applied a leg scissors, which gave MSJ an opening for his 60s reference of the week, Mario Milano. Reno said Debbie Combs also had a great leg scissors. Shultz told Hayme to bring Haskins over to the ropes. While ref Jesse Fields inexplicably turned his back on the action, Haskins ducked. Shultz clocked Hayme. Hayme took a Nestea plunge and was pinned.

WINNER: Haskins in 5:36 after a major malfunction between Shultz and Hayme. It was fine for the purposes of the story. Hayme has had some bad matches trying to carry less experienced opponents, but not here. Haskins’ is developing into a fundamentally sound wrestler, and he did nice job selling the lack of air supply.

Shultz got in Hayme’s face and warned him not to walk away, and Hayme blew him off.

MSJ and Riggins introduced a sneak pack at Paul Adams training regimen as he prepared for his match with Arrick Andrews.

Oh my goodness, comedy has come to SAW.

Adams was in the gym looking completely ridiculous again in a sleeveless “It’s All About Paul” t-shirt, electric blue shorts and dress shoes. He started his workout with “The Annihilator 2000” treadmill. It was one of those cheap apartment gym jobs. The more Adams talked trash, the faster the thing went. He ended up taking a bump and getting dumped like a package on a conveyor belt. The next shot showed Adams nursing the bruise on his arm. ‘You can edit that out, right?” The camera guy reassured Adams they would make him look real good. Adams tried the lat bar. After 4 reps, Adams was midair. Next was the chest press. “Alright Arrick Andrews, you saw that display of physicality over there. Look at me. I’m huge.” Adams said he wasn’t a cold-hearted individual.

If you call me up and you ask nicely, I might actually be willing to let you off the hook on that match next week…You look at this further display of masculinity by the Paulverizer and you let me know.

Adams claimed he was doing reps of 250. “That’s almost 300. I think I’ve got one more in me.” The camera strayed over to the weight plates to show that Adams was only lifting 20 pounds. Brimming with overconfidence, Adams said he was going to do reps on the Stairmaster and give Andrews a few more minutes to think it over. The final shot showed Adams on the floor beneath the Stairmaster calling for help.

Cut to Hammerjack massaging his aching neck. Santel was on the phone trying to coax Dillinger into showing up for his match. Santel apologized for screwing up last week as Paul Adams’ sub. Dillinger hung up on him. “Hey Hammer, you ready for Boogie tonight? You got ‘em, baby,” said Santel. “You want me to take Boogie? After what you let happen to me just now?” Santel said it was an accident. Hammerjack said Santel was killing him.

3 – SAW Tag Team Title Match: Champions TRIBAL NATION (Indian Outlaw & Lennox Lightfoot) vs. HIGH SOCIETY (Sean Casey & Chris Michaels with Tiana)

Outlaw overpowered Michaels. Riggins brought up what great shape Outlaw was getting in. Lightfoot made a blind tag and hit a springboard plancha. Nation did their gorilla press drop on Michaels. Casey pulled the ropes down to dump Outlaw. Casey had a pronounced limp as he went after Outlaw on the floor. Michaels worked Outlaw over. Casey was in for all of 30 seconds. Meahwhile, MSJ was drooling over Tiana. He said she had the looks to be a vice presidential candidate, and he would elect her by acclamation. Outlaw hulked up a bit and made a diving tag. Michaels took exaggerated flying bumps for Lightfoot’s tomahawk chops. Lightfoot broke out the war dance, the prelude to the Four Winds Tomahawk Chop, and Casey nailed him with a foreign object. New champions. MSJ called it a major upset.

WINNERS: And new SAW Tag Team Champions, High Society in 9:25. Not much of a match. They had to work around Casey. Whatever was going on with his knee, he was in no shape to wrestle. Crowd wasn’t feeling it much either. They did nothing to build for a hot tag. The highlight was Michaels bumping like Harley Race for those chops.

We saw High Society backstage looking worse for wear. Michaels said he had a concussion. Casey said he blew out his ACL. In unison – “IT DOESN’T MATTER.” They gloated about winnng the titles and did their catch phrase.

4 – HAMMERJACK (with Rick Santel) vs. “Boogie Woogie Boy” GARY VALIANT (with Miss Boogie)

Boogie’s first official match since his return. Hammerjack blindsided Valiant before the bell. Boogie smashed Hammerjack’s head into six different turnbuckles –called the six corner Boogie Woogie Bop by MSJ. But Hammerjack gave Valiant a hiptoss over the ropes spot with Boogie’s back catching the edge of the apron on the way down. Major deathbed selling by Boogie ensued with the crowd chanting for a comeback. The commentators hinted that ring rust might be hampering Boogie. Santel applied the towel choke. They cut to some true heavyweight females chanting for Boogie. After a delivering a trio of kneedrops, Hammerjack got caught trying to pin Boogie using the ropes. Boogie barely escaped from a piledriver. Riggins said he had never seen Boogie take a beating like this, which was hilarious, since it’s a routine occurrence. Valiant rolled out from under Hammerjack’s middle rope elbow drop. Both men slow to rise. Hammerjack initiated another terrible ref bump involving Kurt Herron. Valiant started towards Santel. Hammerjack clubbed Valiant from behind. Santel pulled out a bag of powder. Valiant mule kicked Hammerjack in the groin and knocked the powder into Santel’s face. Boogie Blaster. 1~2~3.

WINNER: Valiant in 8:44 after yet another screw up by Santel. This was a great story match. Boogie knows drama. The wrestling was nothing special, but it didn’t need to be. The finish (minus the ref bump) was a beauty. Santel looked like Frosty the Snowman.

Anthony interrupted Valiant’s postmatch interview by charging to ringside and shoving a chair into Boogie’s gut. Anthony tossed Valiant in the ring, leveled him with a lariat and hit a top rope elbow drop. With that, Miss Boogie jumped on Anthony’s back. Anthony rammed Miss Boogies into the turnbuckles and left her in a heap. Valiant came back with the Boogie Blaster on Anthony. He scrambled over to check on Miss Boogie. Finding her out cold, Valiant rose up with fire in his eyes…and caught a flying chair to the face from Anthony. Down went Boogie. Anthony knelt over Boogie’s body and called out to Ronnie Gossett. The crowd popped as Raven entered the ring. Raven gave Anthony a chair and scraped Valiant off the mat. Anthony crowned Boogie with a chair shot. Anthony dropped to his knees and wrapped an arm around Raven’s leg. Raven stroked Anthony’s hair. Raven sat Boogie up with his bloody head facing the camera and did his pose. Fade to black.

Closing Thoughts: This makes my list of favorite episodes of SAW. The great things about this show were so awesome that the lousy part didn’t leave much of an impression. Anthony's opening vignette was another killer performance. I thought of Terry Funk. It was brilliant foreshadowing of his forthcoming alliance with Raven. This was the best possible use of Raven – allowing the strength of his character to override his in ring limitations. Between the carnage of Boogie and Miss Boogie both being laid out (the shot Miss Boogie took from Anthony looked devastating), and the twisted father and son scene, the closing segment contained some compelling images. In this case, and it often isn’t, the execution was every bit as good as the story. The double barrel A-Team comedy stories - Santel’s ineptitude as a manager and the Adams training video were both outstanding. Like a pro wrestling version of Michael Scott, Adams is willing to look like a complete idiot for laughs. No two ways about it, the tag title match was bad. The promotion must have wanted to get the belts off of Tribal Nation in the worst way. True, High The Indians were essentially beaten by a one-man team. Casey could barely get in and out of the ring, much less wrestle. I haven’t said enough about the tremendous job Timmy Thompson does production-wise working with a budget that is next to nothing. If there’s an indie wrestling show short of TNA and WWE that looks as good as SAW, I want to see it. If there’s one consistent production weakness, it’s the number two camera, which lacks the clarity and color saturation of the hard cam. When the major pieces come together –story, execution and production – as they did during most of this episode, SAW can’t be beat as a modern version of old school southern wrestling.

NWA Main Event TV Review - Episode 32

Courtesy of Larry Goodman:

NWA Main Event – Episode 32
Airing November 8, 2008 in Nashville on ION affiliate
Taped November 2, 2008 in LaVergne, Tn at the HWA Arena

Opening with a promo from Ricky Syks, who has been converted from the New York Gangster to New York Rocker. Same look. He’s now a singles wrestler and he’s going straight to the top.

Jason James and Tyler Clemmons on commentary for the first NWA ME show taped in LaVergne.

1 – LARRY COOTER & BRYAN CASEY vs. “Playboy” SCOTT HAYES & “New York Rocker” RICKY SYKS

Cooter used a low blow to start the heat on Syks. They worked over his arm. A cross armbreaker was treated like just another hold. Geez. Double flying clothesline. Casey and Syks down and tagging. House cleaning by Hayes. Cooter went for a pumphandle slam, and Hayes countered with an O’Connor Roll, which was a major improvement on the version he beat Daniels with last week.

WINNERS: Hayes & Syks in 7:10. OK I guess. I just can’t buy Syks as a babyface, and Casey has zero heel presence. The best thing about it was Hayes’ fast and furious work with the hot tag.

Hayes cut a totally average promo for his match against Jeff Daniels Tuesday night at the Nashville Fairgrounds with two referees.

Promo by “Mean” Mike Woods. He was sick of Shank Barzini’s excuses for not showing up because they had unfinished business.

2 – “Mean” MIKE WOODS vs. “The Internet’s Favorite Wrestler” WHITE TIGER

They established this was man vs. boy. Woods spinebustered the bejeezus out of Tiger. Tiger capitalized on a missed elbow drop by raining down a bazillion weak blows on Woods, who ended the uprising with two punches from his knees. Awesome. Tiger made a last gasp comeback where he decked Woods with a dropkick and missed with the world’s worst looking frogsplash. Woods smoked him with Clothesline from Hell for the pin.

WINNER: Woods in 4:45. Perversely entertaining. Tiger’s offense is pathetic but he does writhing in agony with the best of them.

Tennessee Homecoming 2008 at the Nashville Fairgrounds on Thanksgiving Night featuring a two ring battle royal as the main event AND a major announcement from Commissioner George Gulas was yet to come.

Jeff Daniels (with Dominique). He was pissed about Gulas ordering two refs for his title defense Tuesday night. Daniels and said Hayes would pay for Gulas’ sins.

3 -- NWA Mid America Heavyweight Champion JEFF DANIELS (with Domique) vs. DYRON FLYNN

Daniels toyed with Flynn, but he got a lot of offense on the champion. It wouldn’t be a Daniels match unless Dominique interfered so James could call her “that little she devil.” Flynn actually had the champ pinned with a sunset flip, but Dominique had the ref (son Jamie but they didn’t make a point of it) distracted. We had to watch Flynn’s belly shake as he delivered the 10 Horrible Punches of Doom. Daniels used an Emerald Frosien as his finisher.

WINNER: Daniels in 7:30 but it seemed to last forever. A ridiculous match. Flynn is way too green to last that long with the champion. I can only assume that Daniels decided to give Flynn his next wrestling lesson on TV.

4 -- ”Magnum” SHANE SMALLS vs. AIDEN SCOTT

James mentioned that Scott and Smalls wrestled each other on one of those brutally bad shows shot at the Tennessee State Fair. Scott landed a wicked dropkick to the side of the head that sent Smalls out of the ring. Smalls countered one of Scott’s aerial maneuvers with a powerbomb, and went into ruthless aggression mode. Finish saw Smalls miss on a springboard twisting crossbody. Scott went up top and got dumped by Chris Cain to set up the pin.

WINNER: Smalls in 5:40. There were some rough spots, but this match was a breath of fresh air after the Daniels/Flynn debacle. Smalls is a kick ass worker.

Promo by Cain and Smalls for their tag match against Scott & Steve-O Tuesday night.

5 -- NWA Mid America Television Title Match: Champion STEVE-O vs. “Colossal” CHRIS CAIN

Back and forth chain wrestling until Cain dropkicked O’s bum knee. Cain used a half crab. O countered a fisherman suplex with a small package. Cain taunted O and continued his assault on O’s legs. Clemmons said Cain was disabling O’s superkick. At 9:00, O hit a desperation enzuirgiri. Comeback time. Cain kicked out of O’s neckbreaker. A ref bump occurred off camera. Visual fall for O with a sunset flip. Cain used ye olde Tennessee Chain on O. Cover. Ferrari stopped the count at one and Cain got up. Time stood still before Scott attacked Cain. Smalls attacked Scott. Ferrari called for the bell. Scott and O cleared the ring with a double dropkick.

WINNER: O retains the TV Title via DQ at 11:30 due to outside interference. Decent match. Strange finish. I’m guessing they had to improvise because Scott was late with the run-in. O did a good job selling the legs.

Promo by O and Scott for Tuesday night. O said they needed to watch each other’s backs.

Closing Thoughts: Geez, was I wrong about new venue being an improvement over the Fairgrounds for television. That plasticized ring covering screams minor league, and all the empty chairs looked terrible on camera. The commentary continues to be a bright spot. James and Clemmons do a nice job of swapping roles between color and play-by-play. NWA Main Event is really struggling right now because their roster is so thin. Again, no mention of J.P. Lightning, as Main Event's most interesting story has suddnely evaporated. Snake Jones is gone, so out of the blue, they’ve got Chaming Charles managing Shank Barzini against Woods for the Fairgrounds show. Scott is a promising cruiserweight, but when a guy that green is your #3 babyface, it’s not a good sign. I’m afraid fans are going to be sick of seeing these guys by the time they get to the Thanksgiving show, and adding a battle royal main event does nothing for me. I like the “be careful what you whine about” angle of the two referee stipulation, but it could really stand a recap of Daniels’ escapades before the match with Hayes airs. Daniels match was a great example of how to devalue your heavyweight title. Fine to do a deal where the heel toys with the rookie. Squash the guy and then refuse to make the pin until Hayes runs in. I wish I could say they made the most of a bad situation with this show, but it felt more like they made a bad situation worse.

Mike Nazarian had been the reigning Southern Lightweight Champion since he defeated Lon Chaney on September 23, 1936, in Augusta.

NOVEMBER 25, 1947 (TUESDAY) – EAST POINT, GA – EAST POINT MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM (Fred Ward – Promoter / Fred Ward Promotions) > Bob Shipp versus Sailor Watkins > Red Dugan versus Mr. X > Joe Estes versus Sergeant Hill / Notes: No documented results for this card have been found.

Lou Thesz had been the reigning NWA World Heavyweight Champion since he defeated Bill Longson in Indianapolis, IN, on July 20, 1948. This version was the one recognized by the National Boxing Association as the National Wrestling Association. This was the original date that had been set for a title unification match between Thesz and the National Wrestling Alliance World Heavyweight Champion Orville Brown, to take place in St. Louis, MO. However, Brown was injured in an automobile accident on November 1, 1949, and the match had to be cancelled.

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – The Ultimate Fighting Championship® and Spike TV have launched an exclusive auction to make tickets available to the public for UFC® Fight For The Troops™. This special live UFC event will raise funds to build a hospital for traumatic brain injuries for the brave men and women in the United States Armed Forces. Thousands of soldiers from nearby Fort Bragg, the proud home of the U.S. Airborne and Special Operations Forces, will be in attendance, but now 30 members of the public also have an opportunity to watch the fight live.

This exclusive auction is being held through Ticketmaster.com and is ongoing now through Dec. 1st. Only 30 tickets will be available to the public, with bidding starting at $200 per ticket.

UFC Fight For The Troops will air live on Spike TV Wednesday, December 10 starting at 9:00 PM, ET. More information about the facility, including ways to donate, can be found online at http://www.fallenheroesfund.org or by calling 1-800-340 HERO.

Josh Koscheck vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida headlines the event, with Mike Swick taking on Jonathan Goulet in the co-main event matchup. The event also showcases five current UFC fighters who are all U.S. military veterans including Luigi Fioravanti, Tim Credeur, Dale Hartt, Brandon Wolff, and Steve Bruno.

“The Ultimate Fighter 1” standout Koscheck (13-3) has won seven of his last nine decisions, and is one of the premier 170-pound fighters in the world. His opponent, Tokyo native Yoshiyuki “Zenko” Yoshida (10-2), has won nine straight pro mixed martial arts fights including his UFC debut last May at UFC 84 with a victory via submission over Jon Koppenhaver.

Swick (12-2), fighting out of San Jose, CA, has won seven of his last eight bouts in the Octagon, including a three round decision over Marcus Davis this past June at UFC 85. To continue his quest for a title shot, he must defeat fellow welterweight contender, Jonathon Goulet (22-9). The hard-hitting 29-year old Canadian recently scored a TKO victory at UFC 83 over Kuniyoshi Hironaka that was awarded Fight of The Night honors.

“The Ultimate Fighter 5” standout Matt Wiman (10-3), a resident of Dallas, Texas, has won four straight contests in the Octagon, including an impressive 2nd round knockout of Thiago Tavares at UFC 85 in June. “Handsome” Matt will face his toughest test yet against the pride of Toms River, NJ, Frankie Edgar. A rising star in the lightweight division, Edgar (9-1) is coming off the biggest win of his professional career, a three-round decision over the dangerous Hermes Franca this past July at “UFC Fight Night: Silva vs. Irvin” on Spike TV.

On the undercard, two promising fighters make their UFC Octagon® debut as Steve Cantwell battles Razak Al-Hassan. The 22 year-old Cantwell, fighting out of Las Vegas, Nevada, held the WEC light heavyweight belt and has won six of his seven pro mixed martial arts fights. His most recent victory, a 2nd round TKO victory over Brian Stann in August, was the biggest of his career and netted him the WEC belt. In the opposite corner will be the unbeaten Al-Hassan of Des Moines, IA, who possesses a 6-0 professional MMA record, and a reputation as one of the Midwest’s top 205-pound prospects.

The undercard also includes former U.S. Marine Luigi Fioravanti vs. Brodie Farber; U.S. Navy veteran Dale Hartt vs. Corey Hill from “The Ultimate Fighter 5;” Ben Saunders from “The Ultimate Fighter 5” vs. former Navy SEAL Brandon Wolff; “The Ultimate Fighter 7” semi-finalist and U.S. Navy veteran Tim Credeur vs. Nate Loughran; Johnny Rees vs. U.S. Navy veteran Steve Bruno; and Justin McCully vs Eddie Sanchez.
