GEORGIA WRESTLING NEWS, NOTES, AND NOSTALGIA: 04/30/2008

Courtesy of GeorgiaWrestlingHistory.com:

NEWS

It appears the final nail was driven into the coffin of Georgia Wrestling Promotions with a disastrous show Sunday night in Woodstock. For starters, advertising was not distributed for posting until the Thursday night before the show. At that point, owner Roger Cantrell had already ignored advice to cancel the show. In fact, talent had been contacted telling them exactly that only to have Cantrell later call to say the show was still on. Come Sunday night, the manager of the Hot Wheels Skate Center was not going to allow the show to take place because GWP still owed her $500 for the bounced check she received for the January show, plus $100 she loaned Cantrell to pay talent, in addition to $500 for Sunday night's show. Cantrell was not at the building because he was at home recovering from another lengthy hospital stay. As per usual with a GWP show, the plan was to a pay the talent with the gate receipts. Wrestler Steve Lawler talked with the manager and they came to agreement wherein the show would go on and Hot Wheels would get the gate receipts, presumably the first $1100, to recoup the money owed. Paid attendance at bell time was no more than 20. It was obvious none of the wrestlers were going to get a dime. Bill Eadie, Tommy Rich, Cru Jones, Terry and Steve Lawler all ended up leaving. Kodiak stayed, but did not wrestle. Murder One rebooked the show on the fly with the remaining talent, and was said to have done an excellent job under miserable circumstances. Cantrell is reportedly back in the hospital and could not be reached for comment. GWP still has a show scheduled for May 16 at the Woodstock Rec Center. Nobody I talked with gave that show any chance of taking place. (Larry Goodman)

Southern States Championship Wrestling returns to Enigma Gym in Enigma, GA, on May 3. Advertised: for the SSCW title, "Mr. Saturday Night" Jarrod Michaels defends against "The 7ft Monster" Impact Player. For the SSCW Southern Heritage title, "Rock N Roll" Chris Turner defends against the "Modern Day Enforcer" Scotty Biggs. Also on the bill is "New Age Superstar" Brooks Rogers versus Mad Dog Miller. JT Taylor, Bryan Fury, Jelena, Samantha Steele, and The Soviet are also being advertised. (Brian Slack)

The National Wrestling Alliance event being advertised for June 7 at Philips Arena in Atlanta, GA, will apparently be a cooperative effort between the NWA and NWA Anarchy, as well as other member promotions around the south. Aside from the prior announcement that Sid Vicious would be appearing, Rob Conway’s name has also surfaced. It is believed Anarchy will have at least one match featuring its talent on the card, most likely being Phil Shatter, Iceberg, and Mikal Judas, as well as managers Jeff G. Bailey and the Reverend. Judas recently signed with Total Nonstop Action, and Shatter has been regularly involved with World Wrestling Entertainment shows on recent shows around the southeast. Anarchy will have a card that night in Cornelia, GA, also. More details as we get them. (Rich Tate)

DISCLAIMER: GWH is not liable for any card changes, cancellations, etc. We can only report what is reported to us. As always, we suggest you check with the promotion within 24 hours to verify information posted here.

NOTES

In Your Head will feature Ivan Koloff on its show tonight at 8:00 PM ET.

GWH wishes a happy birthday to Daivari, who turns 24 today.

Today in Memoriam: Baron Gattoni (62, 1982)

WWF (Not WWE) And Steve Austin Plug On Sportscenter

Courtesy of Adam Lebow:

Sorry for getting this out so late in the day. Last nights/this mornings edition of TSN Sportscenter's Top 10 list focued on the top 10 all time shirtless moments in sports, in response to a video of golfer John Dailey playing the back nine the other day without a shirt. The #5 moment saw a WWF plug, as Steve Austin was on the (old) set of TSN Off the Record and ripped off Michael Landsberg's t-shirt while cutting a promo. The video was about 8-10 years old.

Goran Reljic (7-0-0) 6’3”/205 lbs., fighting out of Zadar, Croatia makes his UFC debut at UFC 84. Reljic trains out of The Roger Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy in London, and in 2007, he swept both the 93kg and absolute categories at the European Gracie Jiu Jitsu Championships. The 24-year-old fighter has submitted 5 of his opponents and has had only one fight go to decision. The Croatian last fought in August of 2007 defeating Waldemar Golinski via unanimous decision. Now he will find himself on the big stage up against top ten light heavyweight contender Wilson Gouveia. Fighting out of Coconut Creek, Fla., (10-4-0) 6’1”/205 lb. Gouveia has been around the MMA block a few times in his career, fighting everyone from Jon Fitch to Keith Jardine. But through it all, Gouveia kept his eyes on the prize, knowing that his day would eventually come. After three straight submission wins in the UFC over Wes Combs, Seth Petruzelli, and Carmelo Marrero, and a stellar knock out at UFC 80 of Jason Lambert, the ever-improving Gouveia gets his big shot to move up in the light heavyweight division if he can finish Reljic.

Antonio “Samuray” Mendes (14-2-0) 6’3”/205 lbs., fighting out of Fortaleza, Brazil is on an 11-fight win streak with his last win against Kiril Sidelnikov. This match up against Silva will be the biggest fight of his career and would put him into the running in the stacked light heavyweight division if he can chalk up a win against one of the most aggressive strikers in the game today, Thiago Silva. Fighting out of Sao Paulo, Brazil Chute Boxe’s Silva (11-0-0) 6’1”/205 lbs., has been impressive in stopping James Irvin and Tomasz Drwal in his debut fights in the Octagon™. He quickly moved on to yet another fierce first round TKO of Houston Alexander. Silva looks to continue his streak of wins as he takes on his fellow Brazilian, Mendes.

Rousimar “Toquinho” Palhares (7-1-0) 185 lbs., fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is a highly touted middleweight who trains with the Brazilian Top Team. Palhares is currently riding a five-fight win streak, which includes victories over the likes of Flavio Luiz Moura, Daniel Acacio, and Fabio Negao. The 27-year-old is a noted Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner and of his seven victories, four have come via submission. His first opponent in the UFC will be Ivan Salaverry, a longtime MMA veteran. Fighting out of Seattle, Wash., Salaverry (12-5-1) 6’1”/185 lbs., is one of the premier middleweights in the game today. The Toronto-native, given his ground knowledge, as well as a solid standup attack, has proven to be a rough night out for anyone at 185 pounds. He has defeated such fighters as Andrei Semenov, Tony Fryklund, and Joe Riggs. Beating Salaverry is no easy task, even in the best of circumstances, and this fight with “Toquinho” will be no exception.

Kazuhiro “Kaz” Nakamura (11-7-0) 5’10”/205 lbs., fighting out of Tokyo, Japan, is the owner of wins over Murilo Bustamante, Kevin Randleman, and Igor Vovchanchyn. This protégé of Judo legend and 1992 Olympic gold medalist, Hidehiko Yoshida, has also locked horns with Dan Henderson, Wanderlei Silva, Josh Barnett, and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, making him one of the most battle-tested veterans at the elite level of the game. Fellow former PRIDE® fighter Sokoudjou will also put up a mean battle that could go the distance. Sokoudjou (4-2-0) 6’0”/205 lbs., moved to the United States from his native Cameroon in 2001, and by 2004, he had turned his attention to mixed martial arts. He made his MMA debut in 2006, and by 2007 he was brought in to fight in the PRIDE organization. It was there that Sokoudjou truly made his mark as he knocked out world-class light heavyweights Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Ricardo Arona in consecutive bouts, with neither fight making it out of the second minute. A member of the renowned Team Quest in California, the 23-year old Sokoudjou comes to the Octagon for the second time looking to show the fans of the UFC why he was, and is still, a force to be reckoned with when he takes on “Kaz.”

MMA Goes To Cannes Film Festival

Courtesy of Bobby Razak Films:

Bobby Razak Secures Two Film Shorts in Prestigious Festival

Los Angeles, CA (April 29, 2008) -- In another creative display of the rapid growth of the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA) Bobby Razak lands another win with two film shorts acceptance into World renowned Festival de Cannes Short Film Corner. The festival runs May 14-24 2008 not far from the French Riviera.

"Invincible Warrior" starring UFC's Chuck Liddell and John Lewis is a 33-minute short that takes a look at the path of two of MMA's greatest warriors. The film goes back over ten years portraying their bare knuckles beginnings and their channeled mindset that makes a fighter unbeatable. Razak's second short of 20-minutes, "Love Pain Eternal," is a unique demonstration of his own path of love and violence that reveals a karmic turning point and reflects upon the early days of the sport. He introduces his sparring partner Heman Gipson who also appears in the first season of Razak's cable TV series "Underground Kings" scheduled to air on Time Warner's VOD channel in May 2008.

"I've always been a risk taker but releasing this film is by far the greatest challenge for me. I never meant for it to be public. I produced Love Pain Eternal for very personal reasons," states Razak. "I guess you can call it payback for doing to myself what I do in all my other films, not only exposing the core but reaching in and stirring it up a bit."

As MMA continues to 'go global' Razak documents MMA's transition from underground to mainstream popularity as well as the legal, ethical and make-or-break career decisions that will mold the industry.

As a young boy growing up in Tottenham, London, England, Bobby Razak found himself extremely inspired by the art of film. Movies such as "Spartacus," "Enter the Dragon," and "Casablanca" triggered Bobby's dream to become a filmmaker. Determined not to let his dream go, Razak moved from England to Los Angeles, CA to pursue his career in film. Once in L.A., Bobby began working for various production companies until he was able to raise the money to produce and direct the critically acclaimed documentary, "Rites of Passage." The film explores the world of mixed martial arts (MMA) and enters the minds of the athletes featured providing a one of a kind, thoughtful, and introspective view of the MMA world. "Rites of Passage," was screened at Sundance Film Festival and appeared on In-Demand PPV across the USA.

Pushing the boundaries, Bobby's next film, "Pit Fight," was shot on 35mm film and contains real bare-knuckle fighting. "Pit Fight" was premiered in the Los Angeles International Short Film Festival, was screened at the Berlin Film Festival, and won numerous visual awards from around the world. He then produced "Invincible Warrior" and "Underground NHB." Switching gears, Bobby's next film, "Love, Pain, Eternal," explores the concepts of love, friendship, and self using his own life experiences. The powerfully emotional film will premiere at Festival de Cannes Short Film Corner May 2008. In April 2008, Bobby will be directing a brand new MMA reality show called "Underground Kings of MMA." Still passionate about his work, Bobby continues to seek out new ideas to capture on film. Often fueled by the experiences in his own life, you never know where Bobby's next film will lead its viewers.

Sponsorship inquiries for Cannes and Underground Kings of MMA should be directed to niki@faldemolaei.com or go to http://faldemolaei.com/bobbyrazak.html.

WEC Bantamweight Champion Miguel Angel Torres (33-1) captured the attention of the worldwide MMA community when he put on a groundfighting clinic against Chase Beebe, capturing the title with a guillotine choke just 3:59 into the championship bout. After years of fighting, Torres has finally earned his place as one of mixed martial arts’ best, pound for pound, but his title won’t be truly validated until he defends it against Japan’s Yoshiro Maeda.

Yoshiro Maeda (23-4-2) is at the top of his game and eager to take the next step in his career. Maeda made his WEC debut in February, knocking out Charlie Valencia with a body kick at 2:29 of the first round. Having shown both heart and skill in the cage, now all he needs is a belt around his waist, something he hopes to take from Torres on June 1.

Former WEC Lightweight Champion “Razor” Rob McCullough (15-4) will be looking to get back to the top of the division when he takes on Kenneth Alexander (5-2, 1 NC). Alexander holds a 2002 win over McCullough, giving “Razor” Rob even more incentive to take his talented opponent out in emphatic fashion.

Making his long awaited WEC debut at 185 lbs, Mark “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Munoz (3-0) is a former NCAA Division I wrestling champion who is considered one of the top wrestlers to ever enter the sport of MMA. With an unbeaten record thus far, Munoz has transitioned well to the fighting world and he will be looking to continue on his path of excellence when he steps into the world famous WEC cage to take on veteran Chuck Grigsby (13-3), who is currently riding an eight fight winning streak.

Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone (7-0, 1 NC) will try to keep his unbeaten record intact at the expense of veteran Richard Crunkilton (18-2). Crunkilton, a former world title challenger, looked impressive in his last WEC outing, winning a unanimous decision over tough Sergio Gomez in March, and the winner of this bout becomes a serious player in the 155-pound title picture.

Former WEC bantamweight champion Chase Beebe (13-2) is eager to get back into the cage to prove he is ready for another shot at the 135-pound crown. Having tasted defeat for the first time in the WEC when he lost his title to Miguel Torres in February, Beebe is ready to prove that he is still the best in the division, but he must first get past grappling sensation Will Ribeiro (8-1).

Submission expert Jeff “Big Frog” Curran (31-9-1) will be stepping into the cage with WEC newcomer Mike Brown (16-4) in a featherweight bout. Curran lost his last fight to Urijah Faber in December and will be looking to get a victory on his way back to the top. WWE'S CAREER ACTION DAY AT SHU

Courtesy of Sacred Heart University:

For Immediate Release
April 29, 2008

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – On Monday, April 28, ten executives from World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) met with graduate and undergraduate students at Sacred Heart University to discuss the varied professional opportunities enveloped in global corporations.

The executives offered an open interview session for any students interested in pursuing employment at the Stamford, Conn., based company, and led workshops to teach the different facets of running an international sports and entertainment company. The sessions included explanations of WWE’s corporate departments, including Marketing, Creative Services, Consumer Products, Television Production and Digital Media.

WWE is offered “Career Action Day” program as part of its ongoing relationship with the Sport and Entertainment Marketing Consortium at Sacred Heart University’s John F. Welch College of Business. The consortium, founded in 2007, is a virtual collection of high-level executives in the fields of sports and entertainment who are working in synergy with the school to help enrich students’ education and career opportunities.

“The mission of the consortium is to bring executives to campus to talk to our students about what they actually do in these types of positions, so that we can bring the real world to the classroom, and the students can hear firsthand what the challenges and opportunities are in these fields,” says Dr. Peter Maresco, assistant professor of Marketing and Sports Management at SHU. “WWE is one of the ultimate marketing machines anywhere. To have a relationship where we can bring these people in is fantastic. It provides opportunities for our students, especially in marketing and sport management, that they ordinarily wouldn’t be able to take advantage of.”

SHU students were offered the same program in March 2007, when approximately 500 undergraduates attended a presentation by WWE Executive Vice President of Consumer Products Donna Goldsmith. According to Rick DelVecchio, the director of career placement in SHU’s Career Development office, the 2007 program resulted in eight to ten students starting their careers with jobs at WWE.

“It’s important to us to be able to establish ourselves as a preferred employer in the area,” says Jon Weiner, a WWE recruiter. “Along those lines, we have a good relationship with Sacred Heart, and we’ve been able to identify some good talent for opportunities at our organization.”

WWE executives who participated in this year’s program included Tom Boland, director of Interactive Marketing; Florence DiGiorgio, vice president of Global Licensing; Mark Frankel, recruiter; George Germanakos, senior manager of Asset Media; Donna Goldsmith, executive vice president of Consumer Products; Christian Lum, creative director; Alexandra McMahon, director of Human Resources; Liz Montgomery, production director; Courtney Pustay, production assistant (and Sacred Heart alumnus); and Weiner.

The following day — Tuesday, April 29 — Tony Romando, vice president and editorial director of WWE’s Magazine Group, will offered a lecture in SHU’s Schine Auditorium about the challenges of publishing the company’s magazines for its adult and child demographics.

On Tuesday, April 15, WWE Vice President for Sponsorship and Talent Brands Ethan Greene also lectured at SHU. Speaking to an audience of about 100 people, Greene discussed how the WWE brands their wrestlers outside of the ring to attract viewers from other markets.

World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. is an integrated media and entertainment company founded by Vince and Linda McMahon. WWE has been involved in the sports entertainment business for 25 years and has developed into one of the most popular forms of global entertainment today. The company is headquartered in Stamford, with offices in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, London, Shanghai, Tokyo, Toronto and Sydney.

PTW Wrestling - "Against The World," Saturday 31st May, Stevenage, England

Courtesy of Power Trip Wrestling:

Power Trip Wrestling present "Against The World, on Saturday 31st May 2008, and we're back in Stevenage! All the details are below, for the show; but before that we've got the big news to tell you....

LATEST PTW NEWS FOR MAY 31ST'S SHOW:

* The main event for the evening, will be a Cruiserweight 6 man tag team match, but with a special stipulation attached; which is if PTW Cruiserweight Champion G 'The Ghetto Superstar' were to get pinned, the PTW Cruiserweight Title WILL change hands. The two teams are as follows, G 'The Ghetto Superstar' (c), Matt Myers, & Geraden, and they will be facing off against Dan Ryder, Kid Glory, & Danny Devine. This one is set to take the roof off of Marriot's School, will Stevenage ever be quite the same after what is sure to be a high flying, crazy, action filled match?

* For the first time in PTW's history, just over 14 months, we will be having a show without the PTW Heavyweight Champion, Shabazz. Prior engagements are the reason, and PTW's boss, Peter Staniforth; is taking the opportunity given here to have a match to decide who the new number one contender is for the PTW Heavyweight Title. The winner will face off against Shabazz in the very near future, and the match will be a four way match in which anything can happen. The first name into the hat, is the evil and mysterious veteran 'The Dark Angel' Mayhem; who will be accompanied by the morally challenged "100 %" Dan Edge. What we do know, is there are three more names to come, two of them will be chosen normally; and the final name will be Peter Staniforth's personal choice. More details to come on this breaking story....

* The new UWL Champion, 'The Wild Card' Kyle Kraze, has been challenged by a wrestler who stands for morals, class, and abiding by the rules. That man is Wheeler, and he is determined to make the most of this opportunity in PTW, to show that you can do things the right way and be successful. Kraze, as you would imagine, is disgusted by this; and is telling everyone that will listen that he is "not just going to beat Wheeler," but is "going to HURT Wheeler."

Royce Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Self Defense, And MMA Seminar With Legendary MMA/UFC Champion Sold Out In Puerto Rico

Courtesy of Jim Hughes & Royce Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu:

Royce Gracie, Jim Hughes, and Luis Rodriguez conducted a Gracie Jiu Jitsu seminar on April 19 in San Juan. It sold out 3 weeks in advance.

West Hartford, CT, April 28, 2008 -- The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructors were guests of renowned Judo Master Hiro Tomoiti of the University of Puerto Rico. Mr Tomoiti has a worldwide resume of places he has taught and champions he has coached. His Judo club members enjoyed a special private seminar. "They had a very good foundation and picked up our technical details very well. Royce showed them some complicated MMA details which he will only teach if the student is grasping the fundamentals properly, that is entirely to Hiro Tomoiti credit as an expert teacher himself. His students really know how to learn" say Jim Hughes, one of 12 Royce Gracie Black Belts worldwide.

Mr. Rodriguez is the head coach for Jim Hughes and Royce Gracie Jiu Jitsu Puerto Rico. A long time resident of Puerto Rico and Connecticut, Rodriguez is committed to bringing Helio Gracie's original jiu jitsu to the people who want to learn self defense the right way from the ground up.

Jay Bell and Dustin Rhodes are purple belts with Hughes and Gracie. They were present as coaching support for the many seminar participants in the Open Seminar. "We were at maximum capacity at 100 participants in the public seminar" said Lou Rodriguez. Jose Villares, a popular businessman in the construction industry in Puerto Rico said "these gentleman were really helpful, they made it easy to learn." He should know, his Brother is a Black Belt with Royce Gracie and Pedro Valente in Miami.

Bell and Rhodes, along with Doug Gallant, are Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu coaches in Connecticut. Jim Campbell also traveled with Hughes, Rodriguez, and Gracie to assist. They are each accomplished fighters. Jay Bell is a "NAGA World's" Champion and Rhodes has won his division at NAGA tournaments. The coaches all agreed "We love Puerto Rico and can't wait to come back to help teach."

Karla Maldanado of La Concha, a famous San Juan hotel destination re-created by hotelier Hugh Andrews in the Canado area, was very helpful with behind the scenes details supporting the seminar. She was also once a Judo student of Professor Hiro Tomoiti. She observed "the group seemed to have a very special bond and it was nice to be a part of that."

Hughes, Rodriguez, Gracie, and team, plan to come back and hold regular seminars in Puerto Rico. For more information go to gracie-jiu-jitsu.com or RoyceGracieJiuJitsu.com or RoyceGracieBrazilianJiuJitsu.com

Ultimate Fighting Championship(R) Joins Forces With StubHub And RazorGator To Bring Ultimate Ticketing Options To UFC(R) Fans

Courtesy of the Ultimate Fighting Championship:

LAS VEGAS, April 28 -- The Ultimate Fighting Championship(R) (UFC(R)) organization today announced a new relationship with two ticket industry heavyweights StubHub and PrimeSport (a RazorGator Company) to become the official ticketing and hospitality partners of the UFC.

The new multi-year agreement designates StubHub as the "Official Fan to Fan Ticket Marketplace" of the UFC, while PrimeSport will become the "Official Ticket Package Partner" of the UFC. The deal promises to offer UFC fans the most user-friendly experience to buy and sell secondary tickets as well as exclusive package and hospitality opportunities that have never been available before for UFC events.

With these new partners, UFC fans will enjoy two best-of-class services for secondary ticket purchase or resale, as well as special packages to UFC events. With a majority of UFC events selling out quickly, fans are regularly seeking alternative ways to attend live events.

"The UFC has the most passionate, loyal sports fans who are always seeking opportunities to experience UFC fights live and in person," said Dana White, UFC President. "The partnership we've struck with StubHub and PrimeSport ensures our fans will work with two of the best services in the industry to get to our live events."

As the world's largest ticket marketplace, StubHub offers the widest selection of UFC tickets. The company is renowned for its attention to customer service and manages each buyer transaction directly, ensuring complete consumer protection while offering the finest ticket shopping experience in the market today. StubHub is the Official Fan to Fan Ticket Marketplace for 29 Major League Baseball teams and dozens of professional and collegiate sports teams.

"Partnering with the UFC is an opportunity we have long welcomed, as we've witnessed an explosion of interest from UFC fans in our marketplace," said Chris Tsakalakis, President of StubHub.

As the global leader in Hard-to-Get(TM) event packages and hospitality services for sold-out sports and concerts worldwide, PrimeSport continues to set and surpass standards in the sports travel industry. Always delivering a first class experience, PrimeSport will offer fans a wide selection of competitively-priced UFC packages and the assistance of experienced event management specialists. Packages can include tickets, hotel accommodations, transportation and exclusive parties.

"This strong collaboration of forces will allow UFC fans to customize their own ultimate experience. We are excited to partner with the UFC with the same intensity that both this sport and its fans possess," states Jeff Lapin, CEO of PrimeSport and RazorGator.

UFC will promote the new relationships through online and offline marketing elements, including signage at select events, emails, website presence and other high-visibility branding exposures, all aimed at driving fans to StubHub and PrimeSport. Similarly, StubHub and PrimeSport will market UFC tickets and packages in online and offline campaigns through website presence, emails, direct mail and TV and radio advertising.

StubHub and PrimeSport also announced today that they have signed exclusive secondary ticket agreements with the World Extreme Cagefighting(R) (WEC(TM)) organization. Much like the relationship with the UFC, StubHub and PrimeSport will provide an opportunity for WEC fans to purchase and resell WEC event tickets.
