NWA Anarchy results from the NWA Arena in Cornelia, GA, on January 5: New Wave (Derrick Driver & Steven Walters) over the Hollywood Brunettes (Andrew Alexander & Kyle Matthews); Jesse Emerson over Adam Roberts; Mikal Judas over Brodie Ray Chase; Todd Sexton & Jimmy Rave over Truitt Fields & Wes Grissom; Talent & Money (J.T. Talent & Andrew Pendleton III) over the Regular Guys (Tyler Smith & Bobby Hill); Nemesis over Chip Day; Billy Buck & Chris King over Jeremy Vain & Rob Adonis; Shatter (w/ Jeff G. Bailey) over Salvatore Rinauro to retain the Anarchy Heavyweight Title; and the Devil’s Rejects (Iceberg, Shawn Tempers, Azrael & Patrick Bentley w/ Reverend Wilson) over the Awesome Attraction (Austin Creed & Hayden Young) & the World’s Prettiest Tag Team (Seth Delay & Adrian Hawkins). GWH wishes a happy birthday to Chavo Guerrero, Sr. (59) and C.W. Anderson (37) today.

Bronko Nagurski died in a nursing home on this day in 1990. He was 81.

On this day in 1994, Sam Menacker died at the age of 79.

Gary Albright passed on this day in 2000 following a heart attack. He was only 34.

Today marks the fifth anniversary of the death of the Mighty Igor, who passed away from heart failure at 70.

NOSTALGIA

1931: George Zaharias defeated Paul Harper in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Henry Weber.

1936: Pete Sauer defeated Rudy Strongberg in the main event at Loew’s Grand Theatre in Atlanta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Henry Weber.

1938: Milo Steinborn defeated Pete Schuh in the main event at the Warren Arena in Atlanta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Frank Speer.

1944: The Black Panther defeated Jack Dillon in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Sammy Friedman. This would turn out to be Friedman’s final card as Atlanta promoter.

1948: Mr. X defeated Spike Davis in the main event at the Larry Bell Auditorium in Marietta for promoter Fred Ward. Ward was not yet affiliated with the Atlanta office of Georgia Championship Wrestling.

1955: Don McIntyre defeated Jerry Graham in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones.

1964: Choo-Choo Lynn defeated Black Monster #1 to retain the Southeastern Heavyweight Title at the Macon City Auditorium for promoter Fred Ward. Ward was not affiliated with the Atlanta office of Georgia Championship Wrestling at this time.

1966: Dale Lewis defeated Sputnik Monroe in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Lewis put up $1,000 in the match with Monroe, betting he could not be pinned within the first thirty minutes. According to the program for this card, Roy Elrod had replaced Howard Haire as Commissioner. It should be noted that Gene Kiniski defeated Lou Thesz on this date, in St. Louis, MO, to win the NWA World Heavyweight Title.

1969: Gene Kiniski defeated Bill Dromo to retain the NWA World Heavyweight Title at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward.

1972: Haystacks Calhoun defeated Buddy Colt in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Calhoun also won a $2,500 battle royal that included Colt, Mr. X, Klondike Bill, Bill Dromo, Oki Shikina, Karl Von Stroheim, Dick Steinborn, Bob Armstrong, Billy Spears, Flash Monroe, Bill White, Joe Turco, the Champ, Cisco Grimaldo, El Mongol, Jimmy Dancing Bear, Alex Medina, Pat Kelly, and Mike Kelly. Assassin #1 managed Von Stroheim and Mr. X. According to the program for this card, Paul Jones was still in St. Joseph’s Infirmary, but was showing signs of improvement. El Mongol also participated in an autograph session for fans.

1975: Ricky Gibson defeated Ron Garvin, managed by Jimmy Garvin, in the main event at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Also, Choo-Choo Lynn defeated Man Mountain Blackwell (‘Crusher’ Jerry Blackwell) in the semi-main event.

1977: Dick Slater, Ole & Gene Anderson defeated Thunderbolt Patterson, Mr. Wrestling #1 & #2 in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Also, the Mongolian Stomper, managed by J.J. Dillon, defeated Black Atlas (Tony Atlas) in the semi-main event.

1978: On the “Georgia Championship Wrestling” television program hosted by Gordon Solie, a match between Bob Armstrong and Abdullah the Butcher, managed by Rock Hunter, ended in a double disqualification when Pak Song, also managed by Hunter, charged the ring and attacked both Abdullah and Hunter. Armstrong saved the Butcher from the attack, and Abdullah found himself being cheered.

1979: Jack & Jerry Brisco defeated Ole Anderson & Ivan Koloff to retain the Georgia Tag Team Title at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Also, Wahoo McDaniel defeated Macon Heavyweight Champion King Kong Mosca by disqualification. McDaniel had put up $1,000 versus Mosca’s title.

1980: Ole Anderson defeated Ivan Koloff in a main event cage match, while in the same cage, the Masked Superstar defeated Tommy Rich in the semi-main event at the William Bell Auditorium in Augusta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Charlie Harben. Also, Koloff & Alexis Smirnoff defeated Jack & Jerry Brisco to retain the Georgia Tag Team Title.
