NEWS

Southern Extreme Championship Wrestling results from the VFW Fairgrounds in Carrollton, GA, on February 17: Sal Rinauro over Jonathan Davis; Scotty Blaze over Chick Donovan by disqualification; Frankie Valentine & Austin Creed over K.I. Elite; the Nightmare over the Eliminator in a mask versus mask match, but as the Eliminator was following through with the stipulation to reveal himself as Josh Stone, Rinauro hit the ring, followed by Tommy Rich to stop the chaos, leading to Tommy Rich & the Nightmare over Billy Love & Sal Rinauro; and Steve Lawler & the Super Destroyer over Bull Buchanan & Bulldog Raines by disqualification. Jeff McGowan, Johnny Boone, and Spanky Emerson were credited as being referees on this card. It was reported that 225 were in attendance. Rich and Buchanan both participated in autograph sessions. Alternative Pro Wrestling results from the Royston Gym on February 15: Billy Buck over Dustin Powers; Darkness over Vincent Chambers; Chris Mayne (w/Kevin Duncan) over Dustin Michaels; Aaron Lee over Jacob Ashworth to keep the North Georgia Title; Bo Newsome and Slim J wrestled to a draw; Azrael over Chris King; and Matt Sells & Ryan Michaels over Jeremy Vain & Don Matthews to keep the APW Tag Team Title. The main event is Gary Valiant versus Rick Santel; Chris Bomb versus J-5; Lennox Lightfoot & Indian Outlaw defending the SAW Tag Team belts against TVA; Damien Adams defends the SAW TV Title versus Big Rig Bully; Rex Sexton versus Chris Cane; and Arrick Andrews versus Jason James. Ultimate Christian Wrestling returns on the Canton, GA, National Guard Armory on March 8 with a tournament to crown a new UCW National Champion, as Sal Rinauro, Frankie Valentine, Alex Phoenix, Enigma, and Kyle Matthews compete in a one-night tournament. Also, Rob Adonis, Colt Derringer, and Dustin Powers in a triple threat match for the UCW Heavyweight Championship. In a Georgia street fight, Billy Jack & Chris Rippy face Brian Lawler & War Daddy. Roger Cantrell announced that Georgia Wrestling Promotions will be doing legends awards presentation in conjunction with their "Night of the Legends" show on March 14 in Dalton, GA, at the Northwest Trade Center. The presentation will take place at 7:45 and will include the awards to the following legends: Dennis Condrey and Bobby Eaton; Bob and Brad Armstrong; Rick and Scott Steiner; Bill Dundee; Manny Fernandez; and Brian Pillman (accepting the award will be Lexi Pillman). Chick Garibaldi died following a match on this day in 1961 at the age of 46.

Cal Farley’s death on this day in 1967 was attributed to heart failure. He was 71.

On this day in 1989, Mildred Burke passed away at 73.

It has been fifteen years since the suicide of 33 year old Kerry Von Erich.

Eddie Gilbert suffered a fatal heart attack on this day in 1995 at the age of 33.

Six years ago today, ‘Slick’ Robbie D died at 32.

NOSTALGIA

1935: Jack Ross defeated Harry Feldman in two straight falls in the main event at the New Coliseum in Augusta for promoter Jack Browning. It was reported that 1,500 were in attendance for this card.

1944: Joe Marsh defeated Al Galento in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Fritz & Otto Schnabel defeated Al Massey & Bob Ford in the semi-main event. Also, the Red Devil (Dick Lever) defeated the Black Panther. During the match, the Devil removed the Panther’s mask to identify him as Laverne Baxter.

1949: Nick Carter defeated the Golden Terror (Bobby Stewart), managed by Earl Wampler, by disqualification in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Jack Dempsey was the special referee for the match. Chris & Babe Zaharias defeated Johnny Long & Don McIntyre in the semi-main event.

1957: We do not have results for this match, but Mark & Donn Lewin were scheduled to defend the International Tag Team Title against Red McIntyre & Chief Big Heart at the Columbus Sports Arena for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward.

1966: Eric & Karl Von Brauner, managed by Saul Weingeroff, defeated Al Costello & Louie Tillet to retain the World Tag Team Title at the Paul Jones Sports Arena for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. It was announced that Johnny Kace and Klondike Bill would be wrestling in Atlanta soon.

1969: Dale Lewis, managed by Jack Crawford, defeated Seiji Sakaguchi in the main event at the Macon City Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Paul DeMarco defeated Alberto Torres in the semi-main event.

1970: Doug Gilbert defeated Buddy Colt, managed by Homer O’Dell, in two straight falls in the main event in Cartersville. It is unclear as to what venue was the site of this card.

1972: Haystacks Calhoun defeated Bepo Mongol (Nikolai Volkoff), managed by Assassin #1, in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Joe Walcott was the special referee for the match. It was reported that the NWA sent Walcott as a troubleshooter. The Assassins defeated Bill Dromo & Bob Armstrong in the semi-main event. Roberto Soto participated in an autograph session for fans.

1975: NWA World Heavyweight Champion Jack Brisco defeated Assassin #2, managed by Rock Hunter, by disqualification in a title match at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Robert Fuller & Don Muraco defeated Ron Garvin, managed by Jimmy Garvin, & Roger Kirby to win the Macon Tag Team Title in the semi-main event. Also, Jerry Brisco defeated Man Mountain Blackwell, and Susan Green defeated Joyce Grable. Steve Keirn & Roberto Soto defeated Dennis O’Brien & Doug Somers in the opener.

1975: A main event match featuring Thunderbolt Patterson versus Bulldog Brower was ruled a no contest at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for the International Wrestling Association. Ernie Ladd was in Patterson’s corner, while Ivan Koloff seconded Brower during the match. El Mongol defeated Cisco Perez in the semi-main event. Also, the Mongols (Newt ‘Geto’ Tattrie & Bill ‘Bolo’ Eadie), managed by George Cannon, defeated Dino Bravo & Gino Brito, and the Mighty Igor, managed by Ivan Kalmikoff, defeated the Giant Goliath. In addition, Tex McKenzie defeated Rip Hawk by disqualification, and Reginald & Hartford Love, managed by Al Costello, defeated Luis Martinez & Argentina Apollo. Sheila Reeves defeated Kay Casey in a ladies’ match. In other bouts, Jim Wilson defeated Ali Baba, and the Islanders (Afa & Sika) defeated Jose Rivera & Buddy Porter. Eric the Red defeated Dick Steinborn in the opener.

1977: A main event match featuring Abdullah the Butcher versus the Mongolian Stomper was ruled a no contest at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Thunderbolt Patterson, Mr. Wrestling #1 & the Mighty Igor defeated Dick Slater, Ole & Gene Anderson in the semi-main event. Mr. Wrestling #2 was the special referee for the match. In other matches, Bob Backlund and Raymond Rougeau wrestled to a draw, and Bill Howard defeated Ricky Steamboat. Black Atlas defeated Jack Evans in the opener.

1980: Mr. Wrestling #2 & Andre the Giant defeated Abdullah the Butcher, Killer Khan & the Great Mephisto in a main event handicap match at the William Bell Auditorium in Augusta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Charlie Harben. Kevin Sullivan defeated Toru Tanaka in the semi-main event.

1983: Butch Reed defeated Buzz Sawyer in the main event at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Ole Anderson & Ivan Koloff defeated Tommy Rich & Paul Orndorff in the semi-main event.

1984: On the “World Championship Wrestling” television program hosted by Gordon Solie, Brad Armstrong defeated Ted DiBiase to win the National Heavyweight Title. Armstrong began the match under a mask and billed as Mr. R, whom DiBiase believed was Tommy Rich. When Rich joined Solie at the podium, DiBiase became distracted and Armstrong took advantage.
