GEORGIA WRESTLING NEWS, NOTES, AND NOSTALGIA: 03/04/2008

NEWS

The previously announced hiatus for Georgia Wrestling Promotions will now only be a matter of a few weeks according to owner Roger Cantrell. The March 28 show in Woodstock at the Cherokee Parks and Recreation Authority will take place with a revamped talent lineup including Hot Like Lava (Cru Jones & Shaun Banks), Sonny Siaki, Tommy Rich, Sal Rinauro, Super Destroyer, Andrew Pendleton III, Dustin Powers, Jamar Acid, Flatline (with Ace Heffner) and more. Cantrell stated that the Dalton show was not canceled due to money problems and he may reschedule it at a later date. Cantrell was quite outspoken regarding the issues he has with NWA Anarchy. Florida Championship Wrestling is back in New Port Richey, FL, tonight at the Bourbon Street Night Club, located at 4331 US Highway 19. Bell time is 8:30 PM, and admission is $7. Advertised: the Puerto Rican Nightmares (Eric Perez & Eddie Colon) defend the FCW Tag Team Title against Brad Allen & Nic Nemeth; Heath Miller defends the FCW Southern Heavyweight Title against Johnny Curtis; Kenny Dykstra versus T.J. Wilson; Afa versus Rycklon; Greg Jackson & Bryan Kelly versus Sheamus & Kafu; Tommy Taylor versus the Giant Titan; Sinn Bowdee & Victoria versus Kevin Kiley & Nattie Neidhart in a mixed match; and Hade Vansen versus Gabe Tuft. The Georgia Independent Wrestling Alliance returned to action on March 1 at the Eastman-Dodge Recreation Center in Eastman, GA: the Slaughter Pitt over Mike Pain & Will Allen; Shawn Hunter over A.J. Steele to retain the GIWA Heavyweight Title; the Georgia Cowboy over Oko Nono to retain the GIWA Mid-State Heavyweight Title; K.I. Elite over Velvet Jones & Firewaker to retain the GIWA Tag Team Title; and the main event featuring Johnny Camo versus Preston Paradise was ruled a no contest. (Rich Tate)

On March 6, Great Championship Wrestling will be having their weekly show at the Great Skate Plex in Phenix City, AL. Signed already is a GCW Heavyweight title match as Johnny Swinger defends against Disco Inferno. Down South Hardcore Wrestling presents "There Will Be Blood" on March 8 at the Multiplex on 230 Blount Crossing Road in Darien, GA. Tickets are $6 and the scheduled bell time is 7:15. In a Texas Death Match for the DSHW Hardcore Championship, Teddy Baddstreet will take on Ryan Savage, Sebastian Troy will defend the DSHW Light Heavyweight Championship against Devlin Valek, Cameron Larue will take on Tetchi Makuji in what is being billed as a "Match Of Honor", Morbid Angel versus Ugly Kid Joe, T-Money versus Sinn, Unknown Artist versus Damon Wreckoning, and there will be a "Locker Room Battle Royal" to crown the DSHW United States Champion. Also advertised for the show is "The Truth" Dallas Riley. Card subject to change. Due to the graphic nature of this event, parental discretion is advised. (Thomas Bugg)

The next Great American Wrestling Federation event will be on March 8 at the Hosford Telogia Game Room Entertainment Center in Hosford, FL. Signed already will be a GAWF tag title match as the Hot Bodies take on former tag champions, BWM. BJ Sullivan vs Scotty Bullwinkle. GAWF Heavyweight champion Steve Goins will defend his title against a mystery opponent picked by GAWF promoter Skip Skipperman. Also in action are the Rayz Brothers. On March 15, the Florida Pro Wrestling Association presents "Shamrocks and Shenangians" which is their 4th anniversary show. The show starts at 8pm at the Boys and Girls Club in Pinellas Park, FL. Tickets are $10. Call (727) 368-6137 for more details. Southern Championship Wrestling presents Spring Breakout 08. The event will take place on April 12 at the Salvation Army Gymnasium in Sanford, FL. Already signed are: In a title vs title match, Light Heavyweight champion Nooie Lee will face Flordia champion Aaron Epic. Also in blind fold match Mighty Ox takes on Sheik Muhammad Akbar. More matches to be signed. GWH wishes a happy birthday to Devon Storm, who turns 34 today.

Helen Hild passed away on this day in 1984 at the age of 57.

Ronnie Etchison passed away on this day in 1994. He was 73.

On this day in 2002, Troy ‘Dream Machine’ Graham had a fatal heart attack at 47.

Also that day, ‘Medic’ Tony Gonzales passed at 72.

It has been four years since the death of Danno McDonald at the age of 81.

NOSTALGIA

1921: Strangler Lewis, managed by Billy Sandow, defeated Tom Draak in two straight falls in the main event at the Savannah Municipal Auditorium for promoter Max Bauman.

1926: Jim Londos defeated Charles Rentrop in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter John Contos. John Paxos and the Masked Marvel (Pete Sauer) wrestled to a draw in the semi-main event, with both men earning a fall.

1931: Jim Londos defeated Paul Harper in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Henry Weber. Also, Wladek Zbyszko defeated Carl Vogel. It was reported that 5,000 were in attendance for this card.

1935: Pat Newman defeated Jack Ross in the main event at the New Coliseum in Augusta for promoter Jack Browning.

1949: The Golden Terror, managed by Earl Wampler, defeated Dick Lever in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Don McIntyre defeated Rebel Russell in the semi-main event.

1966: Eric & Karl Von Brauner, managed by Saul Weingeroff, defeated Mario Galento & Chief Little Eagle, managed by Freddie Blassie, to retain the World Tag Team Title at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Weingeroff and Blassie were handcuffed to Jones during the match.

1969: Ray Gunkel & Buddy Fuller defeated Jim Dalton & Dr. X in the main event at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward.

1977: Mr. Wrestling #1 & #2 defeated Ole & Gene Anderson to retain the Georgia Tag Team Title at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. The Mongolian Stomper defeated Abdullah the Butcher in the main event. In other matches, Thunderbolt Patterson defeated Lars Anderson, and Bob Backlund defeated the French Angel, managed by J.J. Dillon.

1979: Dusty Rhodes defeated Ole Anderson in a main event bunkhouse match in a cage at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Mr. Wrestling #1 defeated the Georgia Heavyweight Champion Masked Superstar by disqualification in a semi-main event title match. Also, Bob Armstrong & Tommy Rich defeated Stan Hansen & Blackjack Lanza. Bobby Heenan managed Lanza.

1979: Dusty Rhodes defeated Ole Anderson by countout in the main event at the Cobb County Civic Center in Marietta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Mr. Wrestling #1 defeated the Masked Superstar by disqualification in the semi-main event. Also, a match featuring Bob Armstrong & Tommy Rich versus Stan Hansen & Blackjack Lanza was ruled a no contest when Lanza turned on Hansen. Bobby Heenan managed Lanza.

1980: Austin Idol defeated Kevin Sullivan in a main event cage match at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Lars Anderson & Mr. Wrestling #2 defeated Ivan Koloff & Alexis Smirnoff, managed by Rock Hunter, by disqualification in the semi-main event.

1984: The Road Warriors, managed by Paul Ellering, defeated Pez Whatley & King Kong Bundy in the main event at the Cobb County Civic Center in Marietta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Brad Armstrong defeated Jake Roberts, also managed by Ellering, in the semi-main event.
