GEORGIA WRESTLING NEWS, NOTES, AND NOSTALGIA: 03/05/2008

NEWS

Although not entirely what promoters of professional wrestling in Georgia would like to see enacted, Senate Bill 413 has been amended in a much more wrestling-friendly version as it continues toward becoming law. The wrestling business has, for the most part, been segregated into its own section, clarifying that it is different from boxing and mixed martial arts. We will have more on this over the next few days. (Rich Tate)

Florida Championship Wrestling results from the Bourbon Street Night Club in New Port Richey, FL, on March 4: Gabe Tuft over Hade Vansen; Kevin Kiley & Nattie Neidhart over Sinn Bowdee & Victoria; the Giant Titan over Tommy Taylor; Sheamus & Kafu over Greg Jackson & Bryan Kelly; a match featuring Afa versus Rycklon was ruled a no contest; T.J. The New Frontier Wrestling Association will be back at the National Guard Armory in Franklin, NC, on March 8. The venue is located at 192 Industrial Park Loop, and matches begin at 8:00 PM. Advertised: Brokishi defends the NFWA Heavyweight Title against Carter Maine; the A-Team (Jamar Acid & Dark Angel) defend the NFWA Tag Team Title against Stan Lee & K.C. Thunder (w/ Dawn Renae); Dirty defends the NFWA US Heavyweight Title against Talon Williams; Simon Sermon (w/ Mr. Tibbs) versus Sci-Fi; the Saturday Night Sensation (Matt Sells & Ryan Michaels) versus K.T. NOSTALGIA

1920: Jack Wilson defeated Sergeant Major Brown in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for promoter J. Hume McDonald. Wilson also defeated Barney Williams earlier on the card.

1922: Strangler Lewis, managed by Billy Sandow, defeated Tom Draak at the Savannah Municipal Auditorium for promoter Max Bauman.

1934: Hugh Winn defeated Fred Lassiter to win the Georgia Light Heavyweight and Southern Light Heavyweight Titles at the Fair Street Arena in Atlanta for promoter Jason Thompson.

1937: Orville Brown defeated Cowboy Luttrall in the main event at Loew’s Grand Theatre in Atlanta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Frank Speer.

1940: Dick Raines defeated Dan O’Connor in the main event at Loew’s Grand Theatre in Atlanta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoters Bill Hartman and Thad Holt.

1943: Rudy Strongberg defeated John Mauldin, substituting for Nick Elitch, in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Sammy Friedman. Dorv Roche defeated Ralph Garibaldi by countout in the semi-main event. Also, Roland Kirchmeyer defeated Boom Boom. During the match, Kirchmeyer removed the Boom Boom’s mask to identify him as Don Lee.

1960: Ray Gunkel defeated Freddie Blassie in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Haystacks Calhoun defeated Jack Terry & Bad Boy Hines in a semi-main event handicap match.

1963: A main event match featuring Choo-Choo Lynn & Chief Little Eagle versus Lenny Montana & the Bat (Joe Tomasso) was ruled a no contest at the Macon City Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward.

1965: Mario Galento defeated Joe Scarpa to retain the Georgia Heavyweight Title at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Buddy Fuller & Sputnik Monroe defeated George & Crybaby Harris (George Harris & George Cannon) in the main event. The program for this card mentions that Ray Gunkel would not be in attendance, as he was going to be getting married to Ann Campbell.

1968: Mr. Wrestling, Enrique & Alberto Torres defeated Hans Schmidt & the Gauchos (Juan Sebastian & Tarzan Baxter) in the main event at the Macon City Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward.

1969: Bill Dromo, Lee & Bobby Fields defeated Dr. X & the Assassins in the main event at the Columbus Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Jack Crawford managed the Assassins.

1971: Luke Graham defeated Buddy Colt, managed by Homer O’Dell, to win a round-robin tournament that also included Freddie Blassie at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. The tournament was to determine a challenger to wrestle the Georgia Heavyweight Champion on March 12, 1971. Ray Gunkel & El Mongol defeated the Assassins in the semi-main event. Charlie Harben was credited as being a referee for this card. It was announced that Wilbur Snyder would be wrestling in Atlanta on March 12, 1971. Klondike Bill participated in an autograph session for fans.

1974: Ernie Ladd defeated Ox Baker in a lights out match at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for All-South Wrestling Alliance promoter Ann Gunkel. Thunderbolt Patterson defeated the Missouri Mauler, managed by Rock Hunter, in the semi-main event to retain the US Heavyweight Title. Ray Candy, Assassin #1 & the Magnificent Zulu defeated Assassin #2, also managed by Hunter, & the Mongols, managed by George Cannon, by disqualification. Also, the Georgia Television Champion Super Gladiator (Ricky Hunter) and El Mongol wrestled to a draw in a title match. The program we have for this card features an advertisement for Maria’s Mexican Restaurant owned by El Mongol, recently re-opened at a new location in Chamblee, at 5071 Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.

1976: We do not have results for this match, but Skip Young was advertised against Abdullah the Butcher in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Thunderbolt Patterson, substituting for Dusty Rhodes, & Mr. Wrestling #2 defeated Stan Stasiak & the Spoiler in the semi-main event. Gary Hart managed the Spoiler. Also, Ted & Jerry Oates defeated Les Thornton & Tony Charles, and Bob Backlund defeated Rip Hawk. Dino Bravo defeated Rocket Monroe in the opener. Ron West and Doug Smith were credited as being referees for this card.

1979: Dusty Rhodes & Wahoo McDaniel defeated Ole Anderson & Ivan Koloff in a main event Texas tornado bullrope and strap match at the William Bell Auditorium in Augusta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Charlie Harben. Thunderbolt Patterson defeated Stan Hansen in the semi-main event, and Bob Armstrong defeated Kurt Von Hess, substituting for Larry Latham.

1980: Mr. Wrestling #2 defeated Austin Idol by disqualification in the main event at the Columbus Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Kevin Sullivan & Tony Atlas defeated Ivan Koloff & Alexis Smirnoff, managed by Rock Hunter, in the semi-main event.

1983: Paul Orndorff defeated Ivan Koloff in the main event at the Chattanooga (TN) Memorial Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Johnny Rich & Tito Santana defeated Bob Roop & the Iron Sheik by disqualification in the semi-main event.

1985: Ron Garvin defeated Ron Starr in the main event in Canton, OH, for Championship Wrestling from Georgia promoter Ole Anderson. Tommy Rich defeated Rip Rogers by disqualification in the semi-main event, and Anderson defeated Scott Irwin in a brass knuckles match. Also, Randy Rose & Kareem Muhammad (Ray Candy) defeated Thunderbolt Patterson & the Italian Stallion.

2005: Sonny Siaki defeated Kid Kash to retain the GCW Heavyweight Title at the GCW Sports Arena in Columbus for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Jerry Oates. David Young defeated Jason Cross in the semi-main event, and a match featuring John Bogie & Lee Thomas versus the Southside Trash was ruled a no contest.

2005: Dixie Dynamite defeated Todd Zane & Colt Derringer to win the UCW Tag Team Title in Grantville for Ultimate Christian Wrestling promoter Rob Fields. Frankie Valentine defeated Brian Lawler to retain the UCW Georgia Heavyweight Title, and a title match between UCW Heavyweight Champion Rob Adonis and J-Lo was ruled a no contest.
