The annual Gulf Coast Wrestling Reunion took place this weekend in Mobile, AL. Reports are that the Friday night dinner attendance was the highest ever, with more than 200. The banquet brunch on Saturday drew more than 300, another record. All the usual attendees were said to be in town for the event. Jody Hamilton was planning to make his first trip down there after many invites, but had to cancel at the last minute due to an emergency. Roberto Soto made it this year, and we are hoping to get an interview with him in the near future. The death of Don Curtis last week coincided with the heaviest arrival day, which was said to have set a somber tone, but in typical fashion, they all managed to have a great time. Many wrestlers were honored. The Pioneer Award went to Danny Miller, Sandy Scott, and Gary Black. Bill White, Gene Levell, Mountain Man, and Eddie Pittman won the Legends Award. Charlie Smith won the Lee Fields Award, while Danny Hodge got the nod as the Speedy Hatfield Man of the Year. Ray Hall and Mike Rykoff were honored for their work as referees, and Jason Dupree (aka Steve Southern) won the Horizon Award.
