GEORGIA WRESTLING NEWS, NOTES, AND NOSTALGIA: 03/19/2008

NEWS

The Southern All-Star Wrestling, formerly known as Southern All-Star Wrestling, card for March 21 at the Bakery in Millersville, TN, is as follows: Main Event TV Title Match: Damien Adams (c) versus Rick Santel (w/Paul Adams); Gary Valiant & Arrick Andrews versus Tennessee Violence Authority (Matt Dillenger & Hammerjack); Southern Heavyweight Championship Match: J-5 (c) (with Cocky Cody) versus Chris Bomb; Chris Eckos versus "Sharp Dressed Man" Lawrence Lane; and Drew Haskins versus Chris Cane. 8pm bell time. Down South Hardcore Wrestling debuts in Brunswick, GA, at the Howard Coffin Park Gym on March 22. Tickets are $8.00. Bell time is 7:15 PM. Scheduled matches include: a title versus title match with Cameron LaRue (DSHW Heavyweight Champion) against Sebastian Troy (DSHW Light Heavyweight Champion); the DSHW Hardcore Championship on the line in a Texas Death Match between champion Teddy Baddstreet and Morbid Angel; DSHW United States Champion Dallas Riley defends the title against Morgan Davis; and Craig Classic (from Big Japan Pro Wrestling) versus Kolby Stern. Also scheduled to appear: Ryan Savage, Night Train, E-Dogg, Ox Madison, K-Oss, and Cyco. Due to the graphic and violent nature of this product, parental discretion is advised. (Thomas Bugg)

Total Championship Wrestling will be in Douglasville, GA, on April 12 at the National Guard Armory, with a starting time of 7:30 PM. Doors open at 6:30. NOSTALGIA

1934: Hugh Winn defeated Fred Lassiter to retain both the Georgia and Southern Light Heavyweight Titles at the Fair Street Arena in Atlanta for promoter Jason Thompson. John Mauldin and Tarzan Jordan wrestled to a one-hour draw in the semi-main event.

1937: Orville Brown and Dick Shikat, substituting for Everett Marshall, wrestled to a ninety-minute draw in the main event at Loew’s Grand Theatre in Atlanta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Frank Speer. Frank Brown defeated Whitey Hewitt by disqualification in the semi-main event.

1943: Rudy Strongberg defeated Dick Lever in the main event when Lever was deemed unable to continue at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Sammy Friedman. Al Massey defeated John Mauldin by disqualification in the semi-main event.

1948: Violet Viann defeated Nell Stewart in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Al Massey & Jack Ross, Jr., defeated Jim Coffield & Don Lee in the semi-main event.

1963: Choo-Choo Lynn defeated Tarzan Tyler by disqualification in the main event at the Macon City Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Charlie Keene defeated Prince Omar in the semi-main event, and Lenny Montana defeated Jack Armstrong.

1965: Buddy Fuller & Jesse James defeated the Mysterious Medics to retain the Southern Tag Team Title at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Lester Welch, Jerry Miller, Billy Hines & Red Roberts defeated Mario Galento, Bob Dalton, Tony Nero & Pancho Villa in the semi-main event.

1968: A main event tornado match featuring Enrique & Alberto Torres versus the Gauchos was ruled a no contest at the Macon City Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Donna Christianello & Barbara Owens defeated Toni Rose & Belle Starr in the semi-main event.

1971: Georgia Heavyweight Champion El Mongol defeated Buddy Colt, managed by Homer O’Dell, by disqualification in a main event title match at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Joe Higuchi was the special referee, and Colt attacked Higuchi following the match. Ray Gunkel, Bill Dromo & Buddy Fuller defeated Krusher Karlson & the Assassins in the semi-main event. Charlie Harben was credited as being a referee for this card. The program for this card reported that Paul Jones would be going to an NWA Board meeting a few days later to oppose the petition submitted by the Assassins regarding their masks and tights. El Mongol participated in an autograph session for fans.

1974: We do not have results, but a main event title match featuring Georgia Heavyweight Champion Thunderbolt Patterson versus Ox Baker, with Ray Candy as a special referee, was advertised at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for All-South Wrestling Alliance promoter Ann Gunkel. Also on the bill was a match featuring Rock Hunter & the Mongols versus Ernie Ladd, El Mongol & the Magnificent Zulu, as well as Ron Pritchard versus the Missouri Mauler.

1974: Mr. Wrestling #1 defeated Georgia Heavyweight Champion Mr. Wrestling #2 by disqualification in a title match at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Ron & Terry Garvin, managed by Jimmy Garvin, defeated Jerry Brisco & Ricky Gibson to retain the Georgia Tag Team Title in the semi-main event. Also, Bob Armstrong defeated Bobby Duncum to win the Macon Heavyweight Title.

1976: Uvalde Slim defeated the Georgia Heavyweight Champion Spoiler, managed by Rock Hunter, by disqualification in a main event title match at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Haystacks Calhoun was the special referee for the match. Stan Stasiak defeated Mr. Wrestling #2 by disqualification in the semi-main event. Also, Ted & Jerry Oates defeated Les Thornton & Tony Charles to win the Georgia Tag Team Title.

1983: Ivan Koloff & Buzz Sawyer defeated Tommy Rich & Paul Orndorff in the main event at the Chattanooga (TN) Memorial Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Tony Atlas defeated the Iron Sheik in the semi-main event, and the Masked Superstar defeated Bob Roop.

1984: Jake Roberts, managed by Paul Ellering, defeated Ron Garvin in a main event taped fist match in Canton, OH, for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Les Thatcher. The Road Warriors defeated Jay Youngblood & King Kong Bundy in the semi-main event, and the Spoiler defeated Brad Armstrong. Ellering also managed the Spoiler and the Road Warriors.
