GEORGIA WRESTLING NEWS, NOTES, AND NOSTALGIA: 03/22/2008

This week’s Peach State Pandemonium featured Phil Shatter and manager Jeff G. Bailey. They discussed Shatter’s rise and success in the business that has taken a relatively short amount of time, as well as his desire to someday reach WWE. NWA Anarchy promoter Jerry Palmer also surprised us with a call during the segment. Southern Extreme Championship Wrestling promoter Scott East also came on to update fans on his health status following a recent emergency, as well as talk a bit about SECW. There was also much discussion on Gary Hart. Click here for the archive. Our guest next week will be Buff Bagwell. According to his column on wrestlezone.com, former TNA wrestler Konnan sued Total Nonstop Action. He is citing racism and discrimination in the lawsuit. Jeff Jarrett, Dutch Mantel, Terry Taylor, Vince Russo and others have been named in the lawsuit. (Brian Slack)

The Georgia Independent Wrestling Alliance returns to Milledgeville, GA, tonight at the Georgia College & State University Centennial Center. This annual event is known as March Madness, and GIWA celebrates its sixth anniversary. Advertised: Shawn Hunter defends the GIWA Heavyweight Title against J-Rod; K.I. Elite (Mike Stratus & Jake Slater) defend the GIWA Tag Team Title against Velvet Jones & Firewalker; Preston Paradise versus Paul Warfield; the Georgia Cowboy defends the GIWA Mid-State Heavyweight Title against Tommy Too Much; a three-way elimination match featuring Ron Stalker, Johnny Camo, and Oko Nono; and Lamar Brown & A.J. The Independent Wrestling Network will be having a show at the Wrestleplex in Fort Valley, GA, tonight. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for kids, with bell time being 7:30. The main event is going to be Buff Bagwell taking on Vordell Walker. The Southside Trash versus Bronco Bryan, Frankie Valentine and Ron Stalker. Mr Hughes versus Scottie Blaze. Down South Hardcore Wrestling debuts in Brunswick, GA, at the Howard Coffin Park Gym tonight. Tickets are $8.00. Bell time is 7:15 PM. Scheduled matches include: a title versus title match with Cameron LaRue (DSHW Heavyweight Champion) against Sebastian Troy (DSHW Light Heavyweight Champion); the DSHW Hardcore Championship on the line in a Texas Death Match between champion Teddy Baddstreet and Morbid Angel; DSHW United States Champion Dallas Riley defends the title against Morgan Davis; and Craig Classic (from Big Japan Pro Wrestling) versus Kolby Stern. Southern Classic Wrestling will be having their rebirth tonight at Big Dogs Billiards in Sandersville, GA. Bell time is 8:00 and adult tickets are $6, and kids under 12 get in for $3. In the main event for the vacant SCW Heavyweight Championship, Big Bank Barfield takes on Leatherface. In a ladies match, Envy takes on Priscilla. "Hotshot" Jamie Holmes takes on his former tag team partner Ronnie Rage. In tag team action, it will be the Cult of Chaos versus the Stanton Clan. Flatline versus Tommy Lee in a Last Man Standing match. Javier Santana makes his SCW debut as he faces a returning Mike Margera. Also debuting is Shimazu the Devil who faces Brad North. Also scheduled is "Marvelous" Matt Mercer to face an unknown opponent. (Brian Slack)

Great Championship Wrestling results from Phenix City, AL, on March 20: Randall Johnson defeated Jonathan Davis; GCW tag team champions J-Rod and Tex Monroe defeated Amien Rios and Michael Cook; AJ Steele w/The Intern defeated Slaughter w/Wicked Nemesis; Orion Bishop defeated Scotty Beach; David Young and Bull Buchanan defeated Hot Like Lava w/Quentin Michaels and Zero Tolerance; and Johnny Swinger w/Quentin Michaels and Zero Tolerance defeated Sonny Siaki w/David Young to retain the GCW Heavyweight title. NOSTALGIA

1932: Doug Wyckoff defeated Bill Middlekauff in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Henry Weber.

1933: Milo Steinborn defeated Whitey Hewitt in two straight falls in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Henry Weber.

1934: Gorilla Tucker defeated Tony Lombardi at the Lakewood Heights Arena in Atlanta for promoter Frank Bettis. Added attractions included a performance by the Miami jazz band and an acrobatic exhibition by Miss Dot Wright. Wesley Brownlee was credited as being a referee for this card.

1937: Red Smith defeated Mike Cassidy two falls to one in the main event at the Spring Street Arena in Atlanta for promoters Frank Bettis and Cleve Roby.

1941: Abe Simon, of Memphis, TN, obtained a promoter’s license, and announced he would begin promoting professional wrestling in Atlanta on April 2, 1941.

1946: Al Massey & Laverne Baxter defeated Ben Morgan & Don Lee in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Buddy Rogers defeated Dick Lever in the semi-main event.

1954: Don & Dick Big Kettle defeated Don McIntyre & Gorgeous Gilpin in the main event at the William Bell Auditorium in Augusta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Tom Mahoney. Also, Mildred Burke defeated Bonnie Watson two falls to one to retain the Women’s World Title.

1957: Tokyo Joe & the Great Mitsu defeated Don McIntyre & Kurt Von Brawner at the Larry Bell Auditorium in Marietta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Elmo Chappell.

1958: The Mighty Yankee defeated Freddie Blassie to retain the Southern Heavyweight Title at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Jerry Graham defeated Chris Averoff in the semi-main event.

1960: Freddie Blassie defeated Haystacks Calhoun by countout in the main event at the Macon City Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Vince Bryant & Chief Little Eagle defeated Jack Terry & Larry King in the semi-main event.

1961: Guy Mitchell defeated Southern Heavyweight Champion Skull Murphy by disqualification in a title match at the Columbus Sports Arena for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Bill Dromo, Judy Grable & Chief Little Eagle defeated Gypsy Joe, Rita Cortez & Killer Campbell in a semi-main event mixed match.

1963: Tarzan Tyler defeated Harry Smith in the main event at the Larry Bell Auditorium in Marietta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Elmo Chappell.

1966: Chin Lee, risking his hair, defeated Mario Galento to win the US Junior Heavyweight Title at the Macon City Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Choo-Choo Lynn defeated Tony Nero in the semi-main event.

1968: Gene Kiniski defeated Mr. Wrestling to retain the NWA World Heavyweight Title at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Enrique & Alberto Torres defeated Tarzan Tyler & El Mongol, managed by Gentleman X, in the semi-main event. The program for this card mentioned that Paul Jones believed that Gentleman X was Jack Crawford in a mask, although he walked with a limp and seemed to be a bit smaller in stature than Crawford. Jones noted that he had agreed to allow Crawford to appear for a match on March 29, 1968, so that both he and Gentleman X could be seen at the same place at the same time, giving him the opportunity to confirm or deny the allegations. Crawford was quoted in the program that he had only pulled the stunt with El Mongol appearing as Dr. M to avenge the fact that Mr. Wrestling and the Torres brothers had started “all of this mask business” many months prior, once again claiming Mr. Wrestling was Tim Woods in a mask. It was announced that Lou Thesz and the Rising Suns would be wrestling on the card on March 29, 1968.

1974: Robert Fuller & Mr. Wrestling #2 defeated Art Nelson & Jerry Lawler in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling Paul Jones. Ron & Terry Garvin, managed by Jimmy Garvin, defeated the Black Crusaders to retain the Georgia Tag Team Title in the semi-main event. Also, Jerry Brisco defeated Mr. Wrestling #1.

1976: Mr. Wrestling #2 defeated the Spoiler, managed by Gary Hart, to win the Georgia Heavyweight Title at the William Bell Auditorium in Augusta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Charlie Harben. Stan Stasiak defeated Dick Slater in the semi-main event, and Ted & Jerry Oates defeated Rip Hawk & Skandor Akbar.

1977: We do not have results, but a main event title match featuring Georgia Tag Team Champions Ole & Gene Anderson versus Mr. Wrestling #2 & Andre the Giant was advertised at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward.

1980: Ivan Koloff & Alexis Smirnoff, managed by Rock Hunter, defeated Lars Anderson & Mr. Wrestling #2 in the main event at the Mid-South Auditorium in Griffin for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Baron Von Raschke defeated Kevin Sullivan in the semi-main event, and Wahoo McDaniel defeated Dory Funk, Jr.

1981: The Freebirds (Terry Gordy & Buddy Roberts) defeated Ted DiBiase & Mr. Wrestling #2 to retain the National Tag Team Title at the Chattanooga (TN) Memorial Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Steve Keirn defeated Kevin Sullivan to retain the National Television Title in the semi-main event.

1982: Ric Flair defeated Tommy Rich to retain the NWA World Heavyweight Title in Augusta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Charlie Harben.

1984: Jack & Jerry Brisco defeated Jay Youngblood & Wahoo McDaniel in the main event in Cleveland, OH, for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Les Thatcher. Jimmy Valiant & King Kong Bundy defeated the Road Warriors, managed by Paul Ellering, in the semi-main event. In addition, Brad Armstrong defeated Larry Zbyszko, and Jake Roberts, also managed by Ellering, defeated Ron Garvin in a taped fist match.
