GEORGIA WRESTLING NEWS, NOTES, AND NOSTALGIA: 06/01-02/2008

I returned from my business trip later than expected on Sunday, so this report will contain two day’s worth of news, notes, and nostalgia, including that of June 1 as well as today. (Rich Tate)

In an email response to the Rasslin’ Riot website, Stan Lane stated that he never spoke with the promoter of New Generation Wrestling, Matt Holder, to accept any bookings. Lane said that when he became aware that he was being advertised for the NGW shows, he asked Sal Corrente to handle it, because he didn't need the aggravation. World Wrestling Entertainment’s results from the One Night Stand PPV at the San Diego Sports Arena in San Diego, CA, on June 1: Jeff Hardy over Umaga in a falls count anywhere match; the Big Show over Tommy Dreamer, Chavo Guerrero, John Morrison, and CM Punk in a five-man Singapore cane match; John Cena over JBL in a first blood match; Beth Phoenix over Melina in an “I Quit” match; Batista over Shawn Michaels in a stretcher match; Triple H over Randy Orton in a last man standing match to retain the WWE Heavyweight Title; and Edge over the Undertaker in a tables, ladders, and chairs match to win the vacant WWE World Heavyweight Title. It has been determined that Orton, who was injured during his match with Triple H last night, has a broken collarbone, and is expected to be out for about three months. WWE’s RAW crew will be at the Rabobank Arena in Bakersfield, CA, tonight. (Rich Tate)

In a show dedicated to Will Power on June 1, !BANG! presented Support the Troops 27 at the Funking Conservatory in Ocala, FL. In a Woman's Championship Contenders match, The Claw defeated Lexie Fyfe. In an 8-man tag team championship match, Dory Funk, Jr, Osamu Nishimura, Ryan Mitchell, and Johnny Magnum defeated Shane Chung, Blain Rage, Antonio Thomas, and Elvis Sharp. Damien retained the hardcore title by defeating Johnny Romano. In the 4-way double crown championship tournament match between ll Marchese vs. "Loudmouth" David Sands vs. Elvis Sharp vs. Chris "Animal" Jones, everyone was disqualified. Shane Chung defeated Flying Ryan "Air" Mitchell w/Sandi Skye to become the new Funking Conservatory Florida champion. Great Championship Wrestling returns to Phenix City, AL, at the GR8 SK8 Plex on June 5 with a start time of 7:30pm. Advertised: David Young versus Sonny Siaki, and Hot Like Lava will defend the GCW Tag Team Title against J-Rod and Tex Monroe. GCW Heavyweight Champion Johnny Swinger, Micah Taylor, Scotty Beach, and The Bruiser are also advertised. (Larry Goodman)

The Georgia Pro Wrestling Association will host their bi-weekly Thursday night event from Club What's Next??? in Tifton, GA, on June 12 at 8pm. Tickets are $10 for adults, kids 6-12 $5, and under 6 get in free. Advertised: in the main event, "Platinum Playboy" Preston Paradise will defend the GPWA Heavyweight Championship against "The Black Supaman" A.J. Steele. In the semi-main event, "The Shooter" Vordell Walker will take on "The Next Level" Jon Davis. Other matches include: 400lb. AWA World-1 South results from Ellaville, GA, on May 30: Ricky Romeo defeated Big Bank Barfield, Lou Cypher and Pain ended in a double-disqualification, Francisco Ciatso defeated Barney Rumble, "The Golden Boy" Chick Donovan and J-Rod defeated Jake Slater and Pete Cannon. It appeared that in an effort to receive two pay days, Ciatso wrestled as the Bug and lost to Wildfire Tommy Rich, who then removed the Bug's mask to reveal Ciatso. As a result, the AWA Southern Heavyweight title remains with The Bug because The Bug didn't defend the title. Attendance was an energetic 159. Promoter Jody Peterman says that World-1 South will return to Ellaville on June 28. (Thomas Bugg)

Within the program for this card, there is a full-page advertisement for “Georgia Championship Wrestling”, providing the first information we have regarding tapings. We know that the WTCG studios at this time were on West Peachtree Street, but here we learn that tapings began at 3:00 PM, meaning very little room for editing could be done by the 6:00 PM airing of the program. Also in this program is information on where the show can be seen outside of the Atlanta area: Channel 12 WRDW in Augusta (2:00 to 3:00 PM Saturday) and Savannah has two locations (2:30 to 3:30 PM Saturday on Channel 22 WJCL and 11:00 PM to Midnight Saturday on Channel 11 WTOC). The Augusta and Savannah episodes were one week behind the Atlanta version. There is also the first reference to local radio personality Jim Bell working on the Atlanta staff, as he was handling chores as Ring Announcer, and was also apparently assisting in putting the event programs together.
