SOUTHEASTERN WRESTLING NEWS, NOTES, AND NOSTALGIA: 08/29/2008

NEWS and NOTES

World Wrestling Entertainment’s RAW crew will be at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids, IA, tonight. Advertised: CM Punk defends the WWE World Heavyweight Title against Batista and Kane in a three-way match; Mark Henry, with Tony Atlas, defends the ECW Heavyweight Title against Matt Hardy; Santino Marella defends the Inter-Continental Heavyweight Title against Kofi Kingston; and Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase, Jr., defend the WWE Tag Team Title against Cryme Tyme. Also advertised are Lance Cade, Jamie Noble, William Regal, Mickie James, Kelly Kelly, Beth Phoenix, D-Lo Brown, and Snitsky. Bell time is 7:30 PM.

Tickets for the following WWE events go on sale tomorrow: September 30 in Green Bay, WI, at the Resch Center; December 19 in Fort Lauderdale, FL, at the Bank Atlantic Center; and December 28 in New York, NY, at Madison Square Garden.

Ring of Honor has added Austin Aries to the October 10 card in Coral Springs, FL, as part of the Survival of the Fittest” event. Six singles matches will lead to an elimination match to determine the fittest. Also part of the event are Tyler Black, Erick Stevens, Kevin Steen, El Generico, and Jerry Lynn. There are to be six more entrants named.

The ROH event on September 20 in Philadelphia is shaping up as follows: Austin Aries, Mark & Jay Briscoe versus Delirious, Jimmy Jacobs & Tyler Black, with Necro Butcher as a wild card entry, in the return of steel cage warfare; Nigel McGuinness defends the ROH World Heavyweight Title against El Generico; Claudio Castagnoli versus Kensuke Sasaki; Bryan Danielson versus Katsuhiko Nakajima; Brent Albright defends the NWA World Heavyweight Title against Adam Pearce, with Larry Sweeney, and Go Shiozaki defends the FIP Heavyweight Title against an opponent yet to be determined. Also advertised: Erick Stevens, Jerry Lynn, Chris Hero, Sara Del Rey, Shane Hagadorn, Eddie Edwards, Bobby Dempsey, Roderick Strong, Kevin Steen, Jigsaw, Ruckus, Kenny King, Rhett Titus, and Daizee Haze.

Prime Time Pro Wrestling returns to the Event Center (5000 Burnham Boulevard) in Columbus on August 29 with "Total Chaos." Advertised matches are as follows: Southside Trash vs. Simon Sermon & Thomas Britain for the tag team titles, Jake Slater vs. Dustin Powers, Bulldog Raines vs. Pain, Elix Skipper vs. #1 contender Chick Donovan, Colt Derringer & Deathrow vs. Chris Stevens & a Mystery Partner. One more match to be added. Bell time is 8pm.

Velvet Sky will be at Sports Legends in Fayetteville, GA, tomorrow, between Noon and 2:00 PM.

Great Championship Wrestling results for August 28 in Phenix City, AL, at the GR8 SK8 Plex with a reported attendance of approximately 175: Murder One (with Wicked Nemesis) pinned Kareem Abdul Jamar. Shaun Banks pinned Scotty Beach when Princeton Gainey III interfered. Tex Monroe pinned Orion Bishop (with Wicked Nemesis) when John Bogie & Kareem Abdul Jamar prevented Murder One from interfering. GCW Interstate Champion J-Rod pinned Mike Stratus (with Princeton Gainey III). Johnny Swinger & GCW Heavyweight Champion Cru Jones & Sonny Siaki battled Micah Taylor & Bull Buchanan & "That 80's Guy" John Bogie to a double disqualification.

Sonny Siaki announced that David Young got himself fired because he was scared to face Siaki next week in the TLC match. After J-Rod's match, Banks attacked J-Rod and busted him open as a warning in the "First Blood" match. After the main event, Swinger and Michaels attacked Micah Taylor until Diane Hewes threw Michaels to the mat. Afterwards, Swinger attempted to hit a piledriver on Hewes until Micah came to the rescue.

In reported title histories during this time frame, there were gaps, and although it is speculation, it appears as though the Fargo brothers were recognized at the time of this card.

Galento managed the Super Assailants. It was reported that the NWA had issued a ban on the use of the sleeper hold in Georgia as a result of the various injuries due to the hold in recent months. The program for this card mentions that the Assassins were the Georgia Tag Team Champions. It is unclear as to how they came to be recognized as such, as the last reference we have shows Chati Yokuchi & Mr. Ito still being billed as of the program on August 22, 1969.
