Alan Wojcik Shoots With April Hunter

--Alan Wojcik

Alan Wojcik: On your Myspace page you declare you’re "A nerd with boobs." Explain any double meaning to the fans who might be wondering about it.

April Hunter: No double meaning. It's just that most days I'd rather pick up a book than go out drinking!

Alan Wojcik: During your RF shoot interview with Talia Madison (featured on Glamour, Glitz & Divas DVD) you mentioned you’ve been doing gymnastics your whole life. Were you in AAU competitions/school stuff and how did it lead to fitness modeling?

April Hunter: I competed in gymnastics at a basic level and martial arts at an advanced level. I also competed in swimming and volleyball. I just have always had an interest in athletics and fitness. I got a big lead into fitness from Devon Michaels. We were both doing centerfold work and the biz had just decided that 'glamazon' was out, 'barely legal softbodies with real breasts ' were in. Neither of us fit that look but we wanted to work. Fitness modeling welcomed our look.

Alan Wojcik: In addition to the fitness modeling you also had a layout in Playboy Magazine. Which is harder taking your clothes off knowing millions of people will see it or wrestling in front of thousands of people and why?

April Hunter: In the short term, wrestling is harder. It involves more skill and the fans can be tougher on you. Plus, it's harder on your body. But in the long term, modeling will come back at some point to haunt you. Whether your family has seen it (Mine has and thankfully, Mom was a model, too. The others aren't so cool about it) or your boyfriends friends (one thought I was actually a porn star), you'll pay for it in some way. But either way, they both beat the pants off a 9 to 5.

Alan Wojcik: You got your start in wrestling working for WCW in 1999 as a valet for the NwO (along with Tylene Buck, Midajah & Kim Kanner) before you trained for wrestling. Looking back do you wish you had done it on reverse, trained for wrestling before going into the business?

April Hunter: I've asked myself that before and I think the way it happened worked out well for me. The only thing I wish I'd known more about was to hang in there longer and realize the wrestling biz isn't the modeling biz. Meaning, the mentality for modeling is that you're only as good as your last published layout. You must keep going, keep getting published. In wrestling, hanging back, being patient and waiting for/creating an opportunity is more normal. But if you're not trained, you don't know this.

Alan Wojcik: After you left WCW you trained under WWE Hall of Famer Walter "Killer" Kowalski. How did you come to choose his school and describe a typical day of training; were the conditions as bad as one would think?

April Hunter: Terry Taylor set up a meeting for me with Jim Ross. I flew out to LA and met with WWE, who set up Killer Kowalski's for me. After getting on the indy circuit, I realized how great my trainer and training really was. The conditions were 'normal' for old school wrestling...an old boxing ring that was stiff as fuck, ripped up mat, no air conditioning, no showers. We bumped, we learned, we bumped some more. You paid up front...if you sucked or were a problem, they ran you out. No refunds, no "never been anywhere or done anything" trainers, no stringing losers along that have no right to be in this business just to keep them paying for another week of school. This seems to be what happens nowadays. It's a shame, because you can't always find the diamonds amongst the clutter of coal on the indies --and it seems that WWE has given up bothering to try. They rely on the lucky sperm club donations instead. Safer bet. But still sad, nonetheless. I see some on this level that simply shouldn't be here anymore. They should be making someone lots and lots of money.

Alan Wojcik: Before this interview you mentioned getting additional training overseas. How do the methods in Japan and Europe differ from training in American camps?

April Hunter: Vastly. They're more like Kowalski's. Europe and especially England have more opportunities to work more often, which is great. Here, you can only wrestle on weekends. But it's not uncommon to wrestle 3-7 times a week overseas, which is why I chose to travel and work outside of the US more often than in it. Japan is even more stringent with their standards. They will hold a mass tryout...2000 teens will show up. They narrow it down to half. Then run drills and narrow it to half. Then halve it again. In the end, they might ask you to do 500 squats and 100 pushups. You can't. No one can. But they'll chose the ones who TRY and don't give up. They look for heart. At the end, they have ten kids. They pick two. If you are chosen, you are pulled out of school and moved into the dojo to train full time. That's your career now. You can't just walk in off the street and sign up for wrestling school over there like you can here.

Alan Wojcik: Over your years in the business, are there any differences between April Hunter and the wrestling character "April Hunter?" Do you prefer being a heel or face and why?

April Hunter: I like playing either, but prefer heel. It's fun to act up. I am nothing like my character. People are always surprised at that. Apparently I look like a real bitch in pictures.

Alan Wojcik: Have promoters asked you to do stuff in the ring you found degrading and how did you address it?

April Hunter: Many. It depends. If it fits in with the match, I'd often do it. If it doesn't, I'd say no. Some have tried to get away with cutting pay after I was already there. They apparently forgot to promote their own wrestling show. I used to tell that that "50 Cent could be here...he ain't gonna draw either if you don't let anyone know and stick a few flyers up!" It's the ones you say 'no' to that will call you "problematic" (or worse) behind your back.

Alan Wojcik: I’m sure this is a dumb question. Are women wrestlers treated different in Japan and Mexico than here in America and if so why do you think that is the case?

April Hunter: Yes and no. It depends on who you're working for. In general, women's wrestling seems to get far more respect in Japan, Europe, Mexico and Canada than it does here. I used to come back home after a hard month and have mixed feelings. Hated it, because I knew I'd be in the ring soon with someone's half-trained girlfriend getting hurt. Loved it, because instead of 25 minute matches catching asai moonsaults to the floor and taking chairshots, I'd have 7 minutes of fluff, everyone would speak English and if it sucked, no one expected much anyway. After all, it was the women's match.

Alan Wojcik: You have wrestled literally around the globe. Do you have a city or country outside the United States you would consider your favorite to visit?

April Hunter: To visit: France. Utterly beautiful. To wrestle in: a tie between Germany and Canada. Both have such great wrestling fans who respect and love the sport.

Alan Wojcik: We have a mutual friend named Pandora (AKS Miss Rachel) who I know works stiff but comes off not dangerous. Besides Allison Danger (who will talk about later) do you have anyone you worked with that thought you were too snug/stiff or to turn it around anyone you would never work with you again?

April Hunter: Nope. I don't mind snug. I mind dangerous/untrained.

Alan Wojcik: Since your debut in the business you have seen women’s wrestling grow to new places like WXW holding a ladies Super 8 tournament and the birth of promotions like Shimmer and Women Superstars Uncensored. Your thoughts on those promotions and do you think women are still to this day looked at as ringrats or groupies.

April Hunter: I'm a Super 8 winner myself, ya know! I think the real female wrestlers are treated better than they once were when I was struggling up and down the northeast.

Alan Wojcik: Have you ever come into contact with some of the ladies who are legendary in the business like Fabulous Moolah, Mae Young, Tammy Sytch & "Sensational" Sherri Martel to name a few and if so what did you take from them?

April Hunter: Yes. I've picked their brains and been fortunate to have some good advice thrown my way...not all of which I took, but hey. Many of the male wrestlers have been just as helpful or more so.

Alan Wojcik: Mind if I ask you about some of the current indy stars like Mercedes Martinez, Daizee Haze, "Prime Time" Amy Lee & MsChif.

April Hunter: I haven't really been following along as much as I could be, but I always thought MsChif was very underrated in the ring. The other girls I know more personally and think well of them.

Alan Wojcik: In addition to wrestling you became manager to JD Michaels. How did this partnership come to be and personal relationship aside, do you think he has what it takes to work for the WWETNA/ROH?

April Hunter: We met over mutual broken noses on a tour in Winnipeg, Canada. He's extremely talented and his new TST (Top Shelf Talent) tag team at OVW is getting amazing reviews. Some of their vignettes are on YouTube: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOV1jgfK6rE) JD can talk, like no one's business, he's got an amazing natural physique with ripped abs and he can make anyone look good in the ring no matter what size they are. I think it's just a matter of time before he's on the top level. He's extremely marketable and appeals to males, females & kids. That's money. He'll be snagged up sooner, rather than later.

Alan Wojcik: At what point did you decide it was time to create a website (www.AprilHunter.com) and how hands on are you in its content and design?

April Hunter: I started my site in 1997, and it's helped me first gain notoriety on the feature circuit and then later, get out circuit. I've been a centerfold model since I was 19 and have accumulate a ridiculous amount of photos. Over 10,000. And loads of videos. I'm more hands on now than ever. I had to take a few classes first, but now I do just about everything. I have had a lot of success with my site and am very grateful to those who have stopped in to take a naughty peek!

Alan Wojcik: Like many wrestlers you have seen Mickey Rourke's amazing performance in the Wrestler. If Hollywood were to make a movie of your life who would play you?

April Hunter: Of course! I got my illegally downloaded copy last month since it didn't open in Louisville. ;) Billy Piper, from Secret Diary of a Call Girl.

Alan Wojcik: Since you’ve done Playboy and have nude photos on your site do you get emails from people who want to book you for stripping gigs and adult movies and how do you handle those contacts if they happen.

April Hunter: Here and there. I just tell them thank you, but not interested,. I get every kind of email you can possibly imagine. Some of the weirdest ones are regarding wrestling! It seems no matter how legit women's wrestling has become, it's still a fetish - just without the fetish paycheck.

Alan Wojcik: I know you don’t like these questions but I figured I would ask two of them. In your RF shoot with Talia Madison, you said harsh things about Allison Danger. Have you ever heard from Allison about your comments you made about working in Japan with her?

April Hunter: I did a tour of Germany and France with Allison last year and we buried the hatchet. We were both younger and more stupid at the time. Shoots encourage you to say whatever is on your mind at the time. I was there when she met Ares (who is lovely) and would like to say a big congrats on their new baby daughter.

Alan Wojcik: Recently you added Talia (TNA Wrestling’s Velvet Sky) to the list of people who deserve harsh words tossed at them. Clue the fans into how she ended up as a member of the "Beautiful People" in TNA Wrestling and how your ideas went with her.

April Hunter: I honestly thought she was a friend and a good person but I was wrong. She stabbed me in the back pretty hard over things like my wedding, bookings and money and used people harshly, including me. I likely gave to her a lot, including our ring entrance, because she was/is terrible in the ring. Ah, well. I've moved on. I won't say I'm happy for her, but I am glad she's not in my life anymore. It's par for course, getting backstabbed in entertainment. Happens every day to many greater and more talented than we are. I sent a tape to TNA a while before they were doing much with women. I was contacted and told they'd bring me in when they started the women's division. I hurt my back badly by the time that started, so I let them know I was retiring. They ended up hiring nearly everyone on my tape.

Alan Wojcik: On a recent video Q & A for your website you confessed you are physically unable to wrestle. What are your current injuries? It must have broken your heart to be told that you can’t wrestle. Have you moved past it and found a new passion?

April Hunter: I have 2 herniated discs, several other degenerated discs, hip problems and a neck injury. I have been in rehab for 2 years now and am still in pain, but at least I can get out of bed on my own now--and walk my dog---and work out. That was an issue some days. When you can't walk or do things on your own, you are humbled like you wouldn't believe. I got bummed, so I sat on the couch eating Ben & Jerry's and mourned my lost career path. And I gained 25 lbs. I was heavier than I've ever been. I was sloppy. I've dropped all that weight now and am in pretty good shape again, thankfully! Wrestling was never my passion. I never grew up wanting to do it. I've always loved pin up modeling, writing, photography, fitness & nutrition. Those are my passions and I'm still doing them. Those are how I got into wrestling, actually.

UFC® INKS AKIYAMA

--Ultimate Fighting Championship

For Immediate Release:
February 24, 2009

Las Vegas, NV (USA) -- The Ultimate Fighting Championship® (UFC®) today announced that it has signed top-ten middleweight contender Yoshihiro Akiyama to an exclusive promotional contract that will see him step into the UFC® Octagon™ for the first time this summer.

“I’m excited to bring Akiyama into the UFC and I can see him making an immediate impact in the middleweight division,” said UFC President Dana White. “Besides his great judo and submission game, he’s a finisher, and UFC fans are going to love watching him because he always shows up to fight.”

Born of Korean descent in Osaka, Japan, Akiyama first made his name in the international sports world as a decorated black belt in judo who collected numerous titles, including a Gold medal in the 2002 Asian Games.

By 2004, Akiyama sought a new challenge in the world of mixed martial arts, and he made an immediate impact on December 31, 2004 when he debuted with a first round submission win in his bout against former world heavyweight boxing champion Francois Botha.

Over the next three years, the 5 foot 10 Akiyama built a stellar reputation as one of the best fighters in the world, submitting highly-touted knockout artist Melvin Manhoef, knocking out UFC middleweight Denis Kang, and engaging in battles with the likes of Kazushi Sakuraba and Kazuo Misaki. In 2008, the 33-year old continued his run of excellence, submitting Katsuyori Shibata and Masanori Tonooka to up his stellar MMA record to 12-1 with two no-contests, with none of his bouts going the distance.

Press conferences in Japan and Korea will take place in the coming days; details to be announced shortly.

No opponent or date has been determined for Akiyama’s UFC debut.

Showtime All-Star Wrestling TV Review - Episode 76

--Larry Goodman

Showtime All-star Wrestling – Episode 76
Airing on January 17, 2008 in Nashville on Comcast 74
Taped on January 2, 2009 at the SAW Mill in Millersville, Tn

Michael Graham and Reno Riggs open the show with footage of the masked man, later revealed to be Andy Douglas, coming through floor of the ring to enter the cage match and join forces with the A-Team. This week’s main event: Kid Kash defending the SAW International Championship against Flash Flanagan.

1 – ANDY DOUGLAS (with Paul Adams) vs. CHASE OWENS

Riggins speculated that jealousy was the motivation for Douglas turning against Chase Stevens. Douglas gave Owens two middle rope leg drops and pulled him up each time. Owens started to fight back and Douglas finished him with the Natural Selection, a devastating double underhook sitout face plant.

Winner: Douglas in 2:40. Old style squash. Douglas is way more muscular than he’s even been before. The Natural Selection is an awesome finisher.

...when you refer to someone by only there last name where I'm from, that's a sign of disrespect. Be that as it may, MASTERS...

A-Team (Paul Adams, Hammerjack, Rick Santel and Andy Douglas) at ringside with the newest member of the SAW broadcast team, Dan Masters. Adams said his therapist told him that keeping things bottled up could cause all kinds of problems - ulcers, high blood pressure, even an unsightly rash – and Douglas had been bottling up for years. Adams said Douglas’ actions against Stevens in the cage (clips airing as he talked) were the manifestations of his frustrations. Douglas took credit for every match the Naturals won, and blamed Stevens for all of their losses. Douglas looked like he was going to hit Masters for questioning his action, then said he would save it all for Stevens. Santel said he could feel Andy’s pain. Santel said for 8 years, he carried that punk Nikki Vaughn and had to listen to Vaughn being called the shining light of their team.

Well look at us now, Nikki Vaughn. Who was the diamond in the rough? Nature’s Greatest Miracle, Rick Santel.

Santel said he had an epiphany inside the cage. Why break Vaughn’s face when he could keep him around for more torture? Adams said if Andrews, Vaughn and Stevens could somehow be pieced back together, A-Team was ready. “Boys, let’s hit the Sizzler.”

High Society video package. Sean Casey, Chris Michaels and the Freak Squad return next week.

Chrisjen Hayme came to ringside and told Masters he was challenging Jon Michael Worthington to a rematch. Worthington said Hayme wasn’t in his league. People like Hayme were only allowed in his zip code to pick up the trash or deliver the newspaper. Before Hayme could respond, Worthington slapped him in the face. Hayme fired back and it was on.

2 – CHRISJEN HAYME vs. JON MICHAEL WORTHINGTON

Back and forth counters until Hayme connected with an enzuigiri up side the head and a springboard moonsault for two. Hayme slowed things down with a ground attack. Hayme tried to kick off the ropes for a side headlock takeover, and Worthington rudely dropped him on his back. Worthington used the punch and choke offense. Hayme kicked out a nice kneelift/neckbreaker combo by Worthington. Riggins said Hayme was “hanging in there like a hair in a biscuit.” Worthington nonchalantly abused Hayme with his power game. Hayme slipped away from a body slam to start his comeback. He hit a spinning headscissors, then got cut down in his tracks by a decapitation lariat. Worthington went for the Brentwood Breaker, and Hayme countered with a roll up for the three count.

Winner: Hayme in 6:20. Better than last week, especially Worthington. With Hayme booked to go over, Worthington took the lion’s share of the match and showcased his power moves.

Riggins read another letter SAW had received from Scott Levy aka Raven, the CEO of M3 Productions regarding last week’s TV show. Levy said he was disappointed in “Boogie Woogie Boy” Gary Valiant’s failure to respond to his offer of an “anything goes” rematch with Marc Anthony, and the lack of any update on the condition of Miss Boogie. Levy said he was sweetening the pot by making it a Bootcamp Match.

Cut to a pre-recorded response from Valiant. Boogie said last week he refused comment on Raven’s letter because he wasn’t interested in a rematch. Ironically, SAW received another letter.

Bootcamp match, huh? Boy if that didn’t put a light bulb in my mind.

Valiant said a bootcamp match was right up his alley. He reviewed the stipulations of the match – no time limit, no DQ, wear whatever you want, use anything you want. Valiant contemplated some of the ways he could torture and maim Anthony. The possibilities were endless.

I don’t have to apologize. I don’t have to say I’m sorry to nobody. So I accept your challenge.

3 – SIGMON vs. JESSE EMERSON

They cut to a shot of Emerson in the back. He had a patch over the eye that took the fireball from Sigmon several weeks ago. Emerson watched on the monitor until Sigmon was safely in the ring Emerson charged into the ring. Sigmon swarmed all over him. Emerson pancaked Sigmon with a spinebuster and rained down punches from the mount. The brawl spilled to ringside with Emerson still getting the best of it. Sigmon went after the damaged eye. The battle continued until the ref called for the bell. A slew of officials and lower echelon guys appeared to separate the combatants.

Winner: Both men counted out in 58 seconds. Heated while it lasted.

Adams called the cameraman into the dressing room. He wanted him there to see Santel’s response because he thought it would make good TV. Adams informed Santel that next week he was getting Vaughn one-on-one. A huge grin appeared on Santel’s face.

Nikki Vaughn, I guess my biggest decision is whether to keep you around and torture you a little bit longer or to finally end your career.

We heard comments from a battle-scarred Flanagan on his upcoming match against Kash. Flanagan said SAW had the toughest competition, and since he hadn’t wrestled in the US much since 2002, this was a way to get his name back out there and prove he belonged at the top. Flanagan said Kash broke all the rules, but he had been known to break a rule or two himself. Flanagan said he might bring some Puerto Rican style violence with him.

4 – SAW International Title Match: Champion KID KASH vs. FLASH FLANAGAN

Riggins advised fans unfamiliar with Flanagan’s work to check out You Tube. Graham said there was a lot of interest in this match from promoters in Puerto Rico because they had been champions of rival promotions (IWA and WWC) there. Riggins added this was the first time Kash and Flanagan had met in the ring. As Kash started into his fan baiting tactics, Flanagan rolled him up for two. Kash bailed. Flanagan socked Kash in the jaw as he came back through the ropes and covered for a one count. Flanagan kept the pressure on Kash and continued to go for pins. They exchanged some wicked chops. Flanagan hit a springboard twisting crossbody for a near fall. When Flanagan tried another springboard, Kash was ready with a dropkick to the knee. Kash wrapped Flanagan’s knee around the ringpost and went to work on it outside the ring. There was the usual silliness with ref Kurt Herron. He tried to cajole Kash back into the ring instead of counting like a real official. Back inside, Flanagan fired up selling the knee big time. Kash took out the knee again and applied the figure four. Riggins said Flanagan has had knee trouble throughout his career. Flanagan reversed it. Kash made the ropes. Flanagan dropped a knee to the groin. Kash sold it but not for long. He slammed Flanagan, but took too much time coming off the ropes, and Flanagan managed to roll out of the way. Flanagan put Kash down with three big shots to the head. Flanagan hit a back body drop. Flanagan went for a backslide, and Kash reversed it into an grapevine ankle lock. Flanagan tapped out.

Winner: Kash via submission in 9:07. Kash wins with cold-blooded psychology. A solid main event and just like last week, it had great heat. More sustained action than the typical Kash match in SAW. Flanagan’s aggressive style forced Kash to abandon the shenanigans much earlier than usual.

Random Thoughts: This episode was a breather - an opportunity to take it all in and set up for more big stuff. There’s been a lot going on here, and they were coming off a huge angle last week with the unmasking of Douglas inside the cage. The two promotion are different scales, but the booking in SAW has a sense of pacing that his so lacking in TNA…The ringside interview with A-Team rocked. Straight out of Memphis. Adams was hilarious with the therapy references. It looked like something of a hazing party for new announcer Masters…The verbal confrontation between Worthington and Hayme showed there may be some personalities inside them after all. The segment was no great shakes, but it at least it gave them an issue without Rachel…Having Emerson watching the monitor to avoid an ambush was a novel way to book the babyface smart…I liked the idea of a second letter from Raven to entice Boogie. The flaw was Raven’s first offer being an Anything Goes Match. Being that a Bootcamp Match is essentially the same thing, why would it make the light bulb go off for Boogie?...In Flanagan/Kash, this show had one of SAW’s better main events. It was the kind of match where both guys benefit. After all the BS in his previous title matches, the champion finally got a clean win in hard fought match against a quality opponent. Flanagan looked good in a match where he clearly had Kash on the run.

Glendale, Arizona, Expected To Be Site Of WrestleMania 26

Tomorrow afternoon, WWE officials are expected to announce that University of Phoenix Stadium will play host to next year's edition of WrestleMania (which, despite what the advertisements might tell you, is the true twenty-fifth anniversary of the mega-event).

Pennsylvania To Allow Mixed Martial Arts

--Pennsylvania Department of State

--State Athletic Commission's Newly-Approved Regulations Take Effect Feb. 27

HARRISBURG, Pa., Feb 23, 2009 -- Pennsylvania has joined the growing number of states to allow Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, events, now that the State Athletic Commission has approved final regulations for the sport, Secretary of the Commonwealth Pedro A. Cortes announced today. The new regulations take effect Feb. 27, 2009.

"I commend the work of the State Athletic Commission on the regulations, which were crafted to ensure participant and spectator safety," Cortes said. "These efforts will assure licensure and testing of participants for communicable diseases, as well as require emergency medical care and insurance for participants. Regulation of the sport also will help ensure that events are orderly and crowd control is maintained."

Cortes noted that MMA has actively sought regulation. Pennsylvania joins a growing number of states, including New Jersey, Ohio, Maryland, California, Nevada and Florida that permit Mixed Martial Arts.

The State Athletic Commission anticipates regulating four to five MMA events per month, which may generate as much as $80,000 per year in revenue for the commission. As a self-supporting entity, the State Athletic Commission receives no taxpayer dollars from the state's General Fund.

The commission and staff worked for more than a year to prepare the final regulations, which are commensurate with current boxing rules. Health and safety of the fighters and public protection are key themes of the regulations. Many facets of the sport were addressed, including age and medical requirements, fees, promoter activity, and ring requirements.

The regulations require that all professional ($22 fee) and amateur ($10 fee) MMA fighters must be licensed and take a pre-fight physical exam by a commission-approved doctor. All fighters must be at least 18 years old. Other exams may also be required, particularly for boxers over the age of 36. All female fighters will be required to take a pregnancy test before each event. All fighters also must provide an annual physical (on a commission form) as well as a negative HIV, Hepatitis C and Hepatitis B exam at the time of licensing, and exams cannot be more than six months old. Insurance is required for all fighters and referees, and an ambulance and emergency personnel with emergency equipment must be at ringside at all times.

Highlights of the promoter regulations require that all promoters must have a valid promoter's license from the commission, which costs $100 per year. All promoters must also complete a criminal background check on a form supplied by the commission (fee is $10). A surety bond of not less than $15,000 must be on file with the commission before an MMA event takes place.

As safety and fairness are primary concerns, specific requirements are also outlined for the ring. The ring must be at least 20 feet square and no larger than 32 feet square within the five-ring ropes. The ring floor must extend at least 18 inches beyond the ropes and must be padded with Ensolite, vinyl or similar closed-cell foam, with at least a one-inch layer of foam padding. Padding must extend beyond the ring ropes and over the edge of the platform, with a top covering of canvas, duck or similar material tightly stretched and laced to the ring platform. Material that gathers in lumps or ridges may not be used.

For cage events, the enclosed area must be circular or have at least six equal sides and be at least 20 feet wide and no larger than 32 feet wide. The floor of the caged area must be padded with Ensolite, vinyl or similar closed-cell foam, with at least a one-inch layer of foam padding. Foam padding must have a top covering of canvas, duck or similar material tightly stretched and laced to the platform of the caged area. Material that gathers in lumps or ridges may not be used.

2/21 NWA Anarchy Report

--Larry Goodman

The February 21 NWA Anarchy TV taping was their best of 2009.

Both main events were top notch. The first hour main was the best match in the building so far this year. The second hour main was a violent, heated no DQ brawl culminating in new tag team champions being crowned.

Attendance was 175, and the heat that of late, has been conspicuous by its absence, was back full force. The transition process to set up the stories for Hardcore Hell is largely over. This was first show of the downhill crash course into the annual rites of spring on April 18.

This will be less detailed report than usual. Anarchy asked me to substitute as play-by-play announcer for the night because Greg Hunter had to cancel on short notice. It was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up. My only request was that they not hold it against me when I stunk up the joint. Through the years, I had developed a healthy respect for what the Anarchy announcers and all people behind-the-scenes have to do to pull off a successful television taping. Or so I thought. That respect grew exponentially as a result of my experience last night. Hunter is an outstanding play-by-play announcer, and I consider Hunter and John Johnson to be one of the best announce teams going. Countless thanks to JJ - I’m sure his back is sore today after carrying someone so clueless about the ways of television announcing through two episodes.

(1) Malachi pinned Todd Sexton in 6-7 minutes. Solid opener. No shortage of heat here. The finish got botched on the first try. Not a problem with a veteran like Sexton. Malachi countered Sexton’s running knee with a small package.

Postmatch, Sexton nailed Malachi with the kill shot. Slim J hit the ring and locked Sexton in a triangle. Sexton’s former protégés, The Technicians (Bobby Moore & Tyler Smith) attacked J until the ref corp broke it up. J had to be helped to the back.

Next up was a backstage vignette featuring the formation of the Entourage, as Hollywood Brunettes (Andrew Alexander & Kyle Matthews) and Taco Delgado joined Mike Mosley as part of Jeff Lewis’ minions.

Prior to the Entourage’s ring entrance, Taco Delgado rolled out a section of red carpet on the ramp and set up a velvet rope across the bottom.

(2) The Entourage (Jeff Lewis & Mike Mosley & Andrew Alexander & Kyle Matthews) beat Wild Bunch (Billy Buck & Chris King) & Bo Newsome & TK Cross in 8 minutes. Alexander is now known as “Hollywood Hacksaw.” He looks more like one of the prophet with that facial hair. Brunettes pinned Cross with Sheeny Curse.

On the WrestleVision, we saw Ace Rockwell and Shaun Tempers find the NWA Anarchy TV Champion Truitt Fields laying face down in the back. That left Rockwell without a tag team partner for the main event against Phil Shatter and Kimo. Rockwell looked at Tempers and said they would have to get the band back together again.

(3) Azrael (with the Reverend & Skirra Corvus) beat Hayden Young to retain the Young Lion’s Title in 8 minutes. Azrael’s cold-blooded path of destruction through the Young Lion’s Division continues. He kept Young’s aerial game under control for most of the match. Scary spot when Young lost his grip on the ropes and fell off the apron. He ended up with a bloody nose but was otherwise OK. Azrael won it with the Ted Bundy. Another good match.

(4) NWA National Champion Phil Shatter & Kimo (with Jeff G. Bailey) beat Pomp & Circumstance (Ace Rockwell & Shaun Tempers) in 10-12 minutes. Not only the match of the night, it was the match of the year thus far. The reunited Pomp and Circumstance got a mind blowing pop. The fans had longer than expected memories. Or maybe it was seeing something fresh. In any case, this match had great performances from all four. Tremendous bell to bell intensity. Kimo took no bumps. He did take a lariat over the top, but landed on his feet. There is no better babyface-in-peril than Rockwell. Shatter speared the bejeezus out of Tempers for the pin.

(5) Adrian Hawkins pinned Chip Day in 6 minutes with the Liger Bomb. This was the weakest match. It didn’t help that Day came into it wit a messed up neck.

In a backstage vignette, Brodie Chase offered his services to show “Hands of Steel” Seth Delay how to make some money in the wrestling business.

Next up was the funeral for Mikal Judas. Chairs were set up in the ring for the “congregation” consisting of all the top heels. Iceberg took up two chairs. The midcard heels acted as pall bearers. They placed the casket at ringside. The Reverend was the natural (or unnatural depending on how you look at it) choice to preside over the service. Brodie Chase spoke in the role of Judas’ original trainer. Jeremy Vain also spoke. Attorney Jeff G. Bailey was the last to speak. The highlight was Bailey dancing a jig on the casket. They burned a publicity photo of Judas and put it in the casket before carrying him out. “Amazing Grace” played briefly. The Reverend’s closing words: “Mikal Judas has left the building.”

Vain said he was letting Rob Adonis have the non-title match against Shadow Jackson. He reasoned that Adonis would soften Jackson up and ensure his title victory at a later date.

(6) NWA Anarchy Heavyweight Champion Shadow Jackson beat Rob Adonis (with Jeremy Vain) in a non-title match in 7:40. Again, plenty of heat. It’s amazing that Jackson has been so over for so long in this building. Adonis worked on Jackson’ knee and ankle – the same that he suffered a torn Achilles tendon in 14 months ago. Along the way, Adonis hit Jackson’s 1031. Jackson eventually did hit his finisher. Vain distracted Jackson. Ref Ken Wallace DQed Adonis for whacking Jackson with a chair.

Postmatch, Adonis applied the claw hold. They did more damage to the ankle, but before they could Pillmanize it, NWA Anarchy owner Jerry Palmer led the charge to save Jackson.

(7) Talent & Money (JT Talent & Andrews Pendleton) defeated New Wave (Derrick Driver & Steven Walters) to win the NWA Anarchy tag titles in 6:30. New Wave got a huge pop, especially from the kids. T & M attacked before the bell and it was all out war. They doubled on Walters, as Driver was, at first, slow to take advantage of the no DQ rules. But once he did, it was with a vengeance. New Wave beat the hell out of Talent & Money. Belt shots to both left Talent busted wide open. New Wave hit the Unskinny Bop on Talent. With Brodie Chase observing from ringside, Seth Delay came off the top with a knuck shot on Driver and put Talent on top for the pin.

Postmatch, Pendleton paid off Chase for their assistance in absconding with the titles.

NOTES: Executive Producer Kevin Marx doubled as ring announcer in Hunter’s absence…A contingent from NWA Charlotte including JD Costello, James Joyce, Tim Young and Ace Armstrong were in the house. I expect to see several more NWA Anarchy stars making appearances in Charlotte in the near future…Anarchy will be hosting its first ever NWA Excellence Camp on March 20-22. The event will be weekend long training provided by Les Thatcher…NWA Anarchy TV airs at a new day in time in Augusta on WBEK 16. It’s now on Mondays at 10pm and Sundays at 3pm…Anarchy also added new clearances in Dallas/Ft. Worth on KHPK3 Saturdays at 7pm (starting 3/7) and online at @SPORTS.TV.

Middle Tennessee Homecoming For Memphis Legend

--Lekisha Oliver

A middle Tennessee homecoming is planned for one of the legends of Memphis wrestling.

Jackie Fargo will be coming to Lewisburg and Tullahoma on March 13th and March 14th to return to the area that loved to hate him.

This Memphis legend has been making the wrestling rounds in Tennessee since the 1950s. Fargo has inspired local legends like Jerry “The King” Lawler, The Fabulous One Stan Lane and Steve Kern to become professional wrestlers.

“Bring the entire family,” says Mikey Dunn, owner of All-Star Wrestling in Lewisburg. “This is one legend that even the grandparents will remember and will love to see him again.”

This rare appearance will be a once in a lifetime opportunity for the children and a revisit to the golden era of wrestling for the adults.

For reserve seating, call (931) 359-5928 to get tickets early, because they are already limited. Fargo will be appearing on March 13th in Tullahoma at 106 Southside Drive and on March 14th in Lewisburg at 2224 Mooresville Highway. Bell time for both events is 8:00 p.m.

Special thanks would like to be given to the sponsors: G&M Towing (931) 492-3412; Mikes Towing & Recovery (931)437-2139; Century 21 (Vickie Cain) in Lewisburg; Action Tents 1-877-708-3687; and Stanton Auto Repair (931) 224-9878.

Come one and come all to make this homecoming a night to remember.

Programming Alert: Tonight's Edition Of 'MMA Sunday' Is Canceled

--Ric Gillespie

I had Rich promote a "roundtable" (my word, not his) discussion, but something has come up, which has caused the cancellation of tonight's show.

Next week, we were scheduled for a one-week hiatus, but in order to make up for tonight's cancellation, we may work through it.

I apologize, and when I get a chance, I'll further explain.
