NEWS

Senate Bill 413, the bill that would substantially revise regulation of pro wrestling in Georgia, is still in the Regulated Industries and Utilities Committee of the Georgia Senate. According to Behrens, the current version is a significant improvement over the original bill. Behrens supports passage as the substitute version contains the rules proposed by the promoters’ advisory board. The objectionable stuff like the 5% tax, the requirement for ambulance and EMTs have been eliminated. (Larry Goodman)

1971: Bob Armstrong & El Mongol defeated Luke Graham & Buddy Colt to retain the Macon Tag Team Title at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Homer O’Dell managed Colt.

1973: Mr. Wrestling #2 defeated Sputnik Monroe to win the Georgia Heavyweight Title at the Paul Jones Sports Arena for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. This was the final match of an ongoing tournament that had taken place over several weeks in Griffin. It is unclear as to some of the dates, matches, and entrants, but it is known that Jerry Oates and the Zodiac were included, losing in the semi-final rounds. Bill Watts defeated the Zodiac (Bob Orton, Sr.) by disqualification in the semi-main event, and Tarzan Tyler, managed by Jack Crawford, defeated Norvel Austin. The match between Watts and the Zodiac had been built up for weeks, with Gordon Solie claiming long winning streaks for both men, with most emphasis being on a “five year undefeated streak” for Watts. The Zodiac was initially declared the winner, but it was learned immediately following the match that he had loaded a weapon into his mask, which he had used to head butt Watts for the finish. The decision was reversed as the Zodiac was disqualified. If Austin had defeated Tyler or at least gone the time limit of twenty minutes, he would have received a match with Crawford immediately afterward. Also, the Super Infernos, managed by J.C. Dykes, defeated Bill Dromo & Bob Armstrong and Chati Yokuchi & Fuji in a three-way tag team match. Leo Garibaldi was credited as being a referee for this card. Chris Casey began writing columns that debuted in the program for this card. It was announced that Bobby Shane would be wrestling in Atlanta on March 9, 1973.

1974: Mr. Wrestling #2 defeated Mr. Wrestling #1 in the main event at the Griffin-Barnesville Sports Palace for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Bob Armstrong & Robert Fuller defeated Ron & Terry Garvin, managed by Jimmy Garvin, by countout in the semi-main event.

1975: Bob Armstrong defeated Assassin #2, managed by Rock Hunter, in the main event at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Hunter, who managed Assassin #2, was suspended above the ring in a steel cage for the match. A semi-main event featuring Don Muraco versus Toru Tanaka, also managed by Hunter, was ruled a no contest.

1979: Ivan Koloff defeated Dusty Rhodes in a lights out Russian chain match at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. The Masked Superstar defeated Tony Atlas to retain the Georgia Heavyweight Title in the semi-main event, and Stan Hansen and Wahoo McDaniel wrestled to a draw in a no disqualification match. Also, Ole Anderson defeated Rufus R. Jones, substituting for Thunderbolt Patterson, to retain the Georgia television Title. In addition, Tommy Rich and Blackjack Lanza, managed by Bobby Heenan, wrestled to a draw in a no disqualification match.

1983: Johnny Rich & the Masked Superstar defeated Ivan Koloff & Buzz Sawyer in the main event at the Columbus Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. 1993: Steve Austin & Brian Pillman defeated Ricky Steamboat & Shane Douglas to win the World Tag Team Title at the Macon Coliseum for World Championship Wrestling. Also, Paul Orndorff defeated Erik Watts to win the WCW World Television Title in the final round of a tournament.

1999: S.D. Jones, Jr., defeated Ice by disqualification in the main event in Eastman for the Georgia Wrestling Alliance.
