NEWS

New Frontier Wrestling Association results from Franklin, NC, on March 8: Simon Sermon over Sci-Fi; Tommy Too Much over Korrupt; Dirty over Talon Williams to retain the NFWA US Heavyweight Title; Billy Starr over the Mortician; Jamar Acid & Dark Angel over Stan Lee & K.C. Thunder to retain the NFWA Tag Team Title; Matt Sells & Ryan Michaels over K.T. Hamill & Cornbread; and Brokishi over Carter Maine to retain the NFWA Heavyweight Title. The NFWA returns on March 22 with two eight-man elimination matches. Billy Starr and Carter Maine will captain teams in one match, while Simon Sermon and Brokishi captain the teams in the other match. (Rich Tate)

American Pro Wrestling results from Spartanburg, SC, on March 8: K9 over Kid Country to keep the APW Cruiserweight Title; Chad Colt & Bobby Diamond over T-Roy & Ice Pick; Mike Madden over Vinnie Valentine; A.J. Frost & Heath Havoc over Dusty Money & Jesse Blood to keep the APW Tag Team Title; Chief Jay Eagle over Taylor St. Cloud by disqualification; Ken Magnum & Erik Anton over Shane Steele & Alex Stone; Adam Jaxon versus Randy Wayne ended in a double count out; Jake Jeckel & Evan Force over Supreme & Tony Lee; and the Assassin over Squeaks the Clown. APW will be back in Spartanburg, SC, on March 15. United States Wrestling Organization results from Nashville, TN, at the Stadium Inn, on March 7. Attendance was 71 as about 2 inches of snow fell just during the show. It was announced that the anniversary festivities would be postponed until March 21 due to several wrestlers being unable to make it to Nashville. The show started about 7:45 (15 minutes early) and finished around 9:30. Justin Spade over Lee Cross and Dyronic in a 3-way when Spade pinned Cross; Steven Green over Chris Norte and White Tiger and Rob C in a 4-way when Green pinned Norte; New York Gangster over Damien Payne by DQ when Norte ran in and attacked Gangster; Steve O over Shane Smalls; LT Falk & Kid Kash over Quinton Quarisma & Jay Phoenix by countout when Phoenix & Quarisma ran away; and Mark Anthony over Flash Flanagan (Flanagan had arrived in town before the bad weather started). Total Nonstop Action’s Destination X PPV is broadcast live tonight from Norfolk, VA: Kevin Nash, Christian Cage, & Samoa Joe team to face the Angle Alliance, with a 3-on-2 advantage for the first 5 minutes; James Storm takes on Rhino in the Elevation X match; Jay Lethal defends the X-Division Title against Petey Williams; a stand by your man match between Robert Roode and Booker T, with Traci Brooks and Payton Banks getting spanked in the end; Awesome Kong defends the Women’s Title against Gail Kim and ODB in a three-way; a Fish Market Street Fight featuring Shark Boy & Curry Man against Team 3D, but if 3D can’t make the weight, Jim Cornette says they’re fired; a three-way between LAX, the Motor City Machine Guns, and the Rock & Rave Infection to determine #1 contenders for the tag team title; and Eric Young & Kaz face off with Black Reign & Rellik. GWH wishes a happy birthday to Nikita Koloff (49) and Rick Steiner (47).

John Katan suffered a fatal heart attack on this day forty years ago at the age of 67.

The death of Anibal on this day in 1994 was attributed to a brain tumor. He was 53.

On that same day, a heart attack ended the life of Eddie Creatchman at 66.

NOSTALGIA

1945: Ben Bennicasa & Al Massey defeated Don Lee & Babe Zaharias in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. John Mauldin defeated Son Almand to win the Atlanta Heavyweight Title in the semi-main event.

1945: The Black Monster defeated Roland Kirchmeyer in the main event at the Augusta Municipal Auditorium for promoter Jack Ross. Tarzan White defeated Jack Dillon in the semi-main event.

1956: Don McIntyre & Chief Big Heart defeated Paul DeGaulle & Pierre LaSalle in the main event at the East Point Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones.

1960: Haystacks Calhoun defeated Jack Terry & Freddie Blassie by disqualification in a main event handicap match at the Columbus Sports Arena for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Bill Dromo & Pepper Rodriguez defeated Krusher Larson & the Brute by disqualification in the semi-main event.

1963: Tarzan Tyler defeated Ray Gunkel in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. The Fabulous Moolah defeated Dot Dotson to retain the Women’s World Title in the semi-main event. Chief Little Eagle won a battle royal that determined that matches for the card. It was announced that Eddie Graham would be wrestling on the card on March 15, 1963, and that Lou Thesz would be wrestling on the card on March 29, 1963. It was also announced that Jack Armstrong and Buck Jones would be wrestling in Atlanta soon.

1964: A main event featuring Bill Dromo & Chief Little Eagle versus Stan Stasiak & Red Roberts ruled a no contest at the William Bell Auditorium in Augusta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Steve Manderson. Sputnik Monroe defeated Tex Riley in the semi-main event, and Buddy Fuller defeated Charlie Carr.

1965: Mario Galento defeated Billy Hines in a main event hair versus beard match at the Macon City Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Jesse James & Tony Marino defeated the Mysterious Medics in the semi-main event.

1971: Buddy Colt, managed by Homer O’Dell, and El Mongol wrestled to a draw in the main event at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Bob Armstrong defeated Kubla Khan, managed by Jack Crawford, in the semi-main event.

1973: Mr. Wrestling #1 defeated the Zodiac, managed by J.C. Dykes, in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. The winner of the match was supposed to receive a match with Dory Funk, Jr., for the NWA World Heavyweight Title on March 16, 1973. However, it was reported that the champion and his father, Dory Funk, Sr., had been in an accident earlier in the week, when their pickup truck overturned on their ranch in Amarillo, TX, causing injuries that would prevent him from meeting the commitment. During the match, the Zodiac removed Mr. Wrestling’s mask, but his head was quickly covered by ringside fans who threw coats over him as he returned to the dressing room, keeping his hidden identity intact. Bobo Brazil defeated Tarzan Tyler, earning the right to face Tyler’s manager Jack Crawford, defeating him as well. During the match between Brazil and Crawford, Crawford threw an unidentified powder thrown into the face of Brazil, burning his eyes, bringing the match to an abrupt end. Bob Armstrong, Bill Dromo & Lou Thesz defeated Bobby Shane, Chati Yokuchi & Fuji, and Sputnik & Rocket Monroe defeated Bobby Cash & Arman Hussein. The program for this card was the first to mention the actual business name of Mid-South Sports, Inc. It credited ring announcer Jim Bell as being the editor for the programs, Chris Casey as a columnist, and photographers Bill Evans and Chuck Lawhorn were also mentioned.

1974: Mr. Wrestling #1 defeated Mr. Wrestling #2 in the main event at the Griffin-Barnesville Sports Palace for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Robert Fuller defeated Jerry Lawler in the semi-main event.

1975: Bob Armstrong defeated Rock Hunter in a main event cage match at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Haystacks Calhoun & Mr. Wrestling #1 defeated Toru Tanaka & Assassin #2, managed by Hunter, by disqualification in the semi-main event. Also, Don Greene & Jerry Lawler defeated Robert Fuller & Don Muraco to win the Macon Tag Team Title.

1979: Bill Watts & Dusty Rhodes defeated Ole Anderson & Ivan Koloff in a main event Texas bullrope match at the Omni Coliseum in Atlanta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Wahoo McDaniel defeated Stan Hansen in an Indian strap match, and a match featuring Mr. Wrestling #2 and the Masked Superstar was ruled a no contest. Also, a match between Ric Flair and Tony Atlas was ruled a no contest.

1980: Ivan Koloff & Alexis Smirnoff, managed by Rock Hunter, defeated Lars Anderson & Mr. Wrestling #2 in the main event at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Also, Joyce Grable won a ladies battle royal, and Kevin Sullivan defeated Baron Von Raschke by disqualification.

1980: Dusty Rhodes & Wahoo McDaniel defeated Terry Funk & Dory Funk, Jr., in the main event at the Omni Coliseum in Atlanta for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Mr. Wrestling #2 defeated Austin Idol in the semi-main event, and Ivan Koloff & Alexis Smirnoff, managed by Rock Hunter, defeated Lars Anderson & Stan Hansen. Also, Wenona Little Heart won a ladies battle royal, and Kevin Sullivan defeated Baron Von Raschke by disqualification.

1982: Tommy Rich defeated the Super Destroyer to retain the National Heavyweight Title in Lansing, MI, for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Les Thatcher.

1984: The Road Warriors, managed by Paul Ellering, defeated Pez Whatley & King Kong Bundy in the main event at the Wheeling (WV) Civic Center for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Les Thatcher. Jake Roberts defeated Ron Garvin in the semi-main event, and the Spoiler defeated Bob Roop. Roberts and the Spoiler were also managed by Ellering.

1986: A main event featuring Ron Garvin versus Ric Flair was ruled a no contest at the Omni Coliseum in Atlanta for Jim Crockett Promotions. The Rock & Roll Express defeated the Midnight Express in the semi-main event, and Magnum T.A. defeated Nikita Koloff. Also, Dusty Rhodes defeated Arn Anderson by disqualification, while Baron Von Raschke defeated Pez Whatley.

2007: Advancing in the Second Annual Old School Tag Team Tournament for AWA World-1 South in Cordele, GA, for a reported $10,000 prize were KI Elite (Mike Stratus & Jake Slater), Scott Davis & Brad Thomas, the Heartbreak Express (Sean & Phil Davis), and the Nightmare & the Masked Superstar. Chasyn Rance retained the AWA World-1 Light Heavyweight Title over Johnny Rodriguez, Glacier pinned Big Bank Barfield in the Lumberjack Match, and Ricky Morton got the win in the semi-main when Tully Blanchard was disqualified. The main event was a bit different than advertised, as some last minute substitutions and replacements occurred. With Mark Briscoe unable to wrestle due to an injury, Jay Briscoe won a Triple Threat bout over Roderick Strong and Erik Stevens. It was reported that about 130 people were in attendance.
