Southern Extreme Championship Wrestling runs in Carrollton, GA, tonight at the VFW Fairgrounds, beginning at 6:00 PM. Call (770) 355-5742 for more info. Ringside tickets are $10. All other seating is $8. Advertised: Bull Buchanan versus the Super Destroyer for the SECW Heavyweight Title, with No DQ and No Time Limit; Bob Armstrong & Tommy Rich versus Bulldog Raines & Rowdy Matiz (from the Southside Trash) in a West Georgia Tornado Match; a 12 person pole battle royal, including men and women; Scotty Blaze & Bambi versus Will Owens & Melissa Coates; the Nightmare versus the Eliminator; and Jimmy Rave, Billy Love & Sal Rinauro versus Frankie Valentine, Adrian Hawkins & Kyle Matthews. United Championship Wrestling drew a record crowd of 300 Saturday night in Maryville, TN. This promotion runs in the Knoxville area where they have a 30 minute weekly television show. Results are as follows: Rip O' Kelly beat Menace; Scotty Hanson beat Moondog Chester in a hardcore match; Donovan Daniels won a four-man battle royal over Connor Blaze, Billy Marshall & Jonathan McMurray; Travis Sawyer & Jason Maxx beat the Maddox Brothers; In an 8 man elimination match, Shane Williams & John Justice & Jesse Ellis & Rick Steiner defeated Henry Hoss & Roxx & Edward Idol & Jeff Anderson. Williams pinned Anderson to win the match for his team and also win the UCW Heavyweight Title. (Larry Goodman)

On January 19, Florida Championship Wrestling was at the USA Flea Market 11721 US 19 in Port Richey/Hudson for an afternoon show that was free to the general public: Tommy Taylor defeated Chris Gray; Mighty Mikey defeated Mr. Yamamoto; Robert Anthony & Johnny Curtis defeated “Bad Seed” Shawn Osborne & “Carnival Freak from Myrtle Creek” Sinn Bowdee; In a triple threat match, Kevin Kiley defeated “Greek God” Brandon Groom and “Campus Legend” Brad Allen; In a Diva’s match refereed by Maryse, the Bella Twins (Nicole & Brianna) defeated Nattie Neidhart & Victoria Crawford; In a non title match, Steve Lewington defeated the “new” FCW southern Heavyweight champion “Handsome” Heath Miller (w/Ted DiBiase Jr.); In six man tag team action, Rycklon, “Puerto Rican Nightmare” Eric Perez & “the Rocket Surgeon” G-Rilla defeated Sheamus, Jake Hager & the 7ft Giant Titan (w/Mosca); “Stampede Kid” TJ Wilson defeated “the Natural” Nic Nemeth (w/Big Rob); and Billy Kidman defeated “South City Thriller” Hade Vansen. Bell time of 8:30pm with $7 admission with a full menu and drink specials all night. On January 26 FCW will return to the Jewish Community Center. GWH wishes a happy birthday to Curtis Thompson, who turns 45 today.

Today in 1998, Bobo Brazil died from heart problems at the age of 74.

Tony Lanza passed away at 84 on this day in 2005.

That same day, Gary Lee Pearson succumbed to cancer. He was 61.

NOSTALGIA

1931: Dick Shikat defeated Paul Jones in two straight falls at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Henry Weber.

1939: We do not have results for this match, but Jack McAdams was scheduled to defend the Southern Light Heavyweight Title against Young Londos (Fred Ward) at the Warren Arena in Atlanta for promoters Frank Bettis and Cleve Roby.

1948: Joe Estes defeated Bob Crutchfield in the main event at the East Point Municipal Auditorium for promoter Fred Ward. Ward was not yet affiliated with Georgia Championship Wrestling.

1953: Tom Mahoney defeated Mayes McLain in the main event at the Macon City Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward.

1958: Jackie Nichols, Marco Polo & Bibber McCoy defeated the Mighty Yankee, Boris & Nicoli Volkoff in the main event at the William Bell Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Robert McCoy. Incidentally, Robert and Bibber McCoy were the same person.

1960: Freddie Blassie defeated boxer Joey Maxim at 2:18 in fourth round of a boxing match at the Columbus Sports Arena for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward.

1967: Ramon Torres defeated Butcher Vachon by disqualification in the main event at the Paul Jones Sports Arena for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones.

1970: Doug Gilbert defeated Paul DeMarco, managed by Homer O’Dell, in the main event at the Macon City Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. There were two referees for the match. During the match, O’Dell was handcuffed to Leon Ogle. Alberto & Ramon Torres defeated the Assassins in the semi-main event. Also, Toni Rose defeated Donna Christianello to retain the Women’s Southern Title.

1975: We do not have results for this card, but the scheduled main event at the William Bell Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Charlie Harben was Ricky Gibson versus Bob Orton, Jr., in a brass knucks match. The advertised semi-main event was Assassin #2, managed by Rock Hunter, versus Mr. Wrestling #2. There was also a $2,000 battle royal to be featured, including Rocky Johnson, Robert Fuller, Jimmy Golden, Steve Keirn, Roger Kirby, Ron Garvin, and Man Mountain Blackwell (Jerry ‘Crusher’ Blackwell). Bearcat Wright managed Kirby, and Jimmy Garvin managed Ron Garvin.

1976: Dusty Rhodes defeated Abdullah the Butcher in a main event Texas bullrope match at the Macon Coliseum for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Fred Ward. Also, the Spoiler, managed by Gary Hart, defeated Bob Armstrong to retain the Georgia Heavyweight Title.

1978: Dick Slater defeated Stan Hansen in the main event at the Atlanta Municipal Auditorium for Georgia Championship Wrestling promoter Paul Jones. Bob Armstrong defeated the Mongolian Stomper, managed by Gorgeous George, Jr., in the semi-main event. Also, Tony Atlas & Bobo Brazil defeated Ole Anderson & Jacques Goulet.

1979: The Masked Superstar defeated Raymond Rougeau to retain the Georgia Heavyweight Title at the WTCG Studios in Atlanta for the “Georgia Championship Wrestling” television program hosted by Gordon Solie.

2002: Triple H was the winner of the Royal Rumble at Philips Arena in Atlanta for the World Wrestling Federation. Rikishi, Goldust, the Big Bossman, Bradshaw, Lance Storm, Al Snow, Billy Gunn, the Undertaker, Matt Hardy, Jeff Hardy, Maven, Scotty Too Hotty, Christian, Dallas Page, Chuck Palumbo, the Godfather, Albert, Perry Saturn, Steve Austin, Val Venis, Test, the Hurricane, Farooq, Mr. Perfect, Kurt Angle, the Big Show, Kane, Rob Van Dam, and Booker T also participated. Also, Chris Jericho defeated the Rock to retain the WWF World Heavyweight Title, and Ric Flair defeated Vince McMahon in a no disqualification match. Trish Stratus defeated Jazz to retain the WWF Women’s Title, with Jacqueline as a special referee. William Regal defeated Edge to win the Inter-Continental Heavyweight Title, and Spike Dudley & Tazz defeated the Dudley Boyz (w/ Stacy Keibler) to retain the WWF World Tag Team Title. It was reported that 12,915 were in attendance for this card.

2007: Glacier defeated Scotty Riggs in the main event to retain the Southern Heavyweight Title in Savannah for AWA World-1 South promoter Jody Peterman. Vordell Walker defeated Roderick Strong in the semi-main event. Jonathan Davis & Eric Stevens defeated the Heartbreak Express. It was reported that 100 were in attendance for this card.
